10k?

'hey there mr.police man, i found this 8k lying around in the street, someone must have lost it...'

Eweser 09-27-2005 06:07 PM

no way could i keep it...too much guilt....and to me, it would be the right thing to do. if that had been my money, (I'll never see $10k in cash), i would want someone to return it...but i definitely think a reward would be in order.

pick it up, stick it in my pocket and keep walkin' like nuthin ever happened. and i'd be dam sure i don't do something stupid like accidentally drop it on my way home.

It seems that putting it under your desk at work is not the thing to do, apparently

A man who kept more than $250,000 he said he found in a Sydney laneway, has escaped jail after pleading guilty to a criminal charge over the cash haul.

Sean Clifford was arrested in May after police received a tip-off from one of his colleagues at Macquarie Bank.

The colleague had found $110,000 in $100 and $50 notes under Clifford's desk at work.

Clifford, 23, later told police he had found more than $250,000 in a bag at the side of an inner-city street several days earlier, stashing more than $150,000 in a safety deposit box.

Clifford, who lives in the Sydney suburb of Chippendale, said he didn't know what to do with the money when he found it, but pleaded guilty in Downing Central Local Court to stealing by finding after failing to hand in the cash.

Sentencing Clifford today, Magistrate Christopher Longley said "there needs to be a general deterrence for people who locate property which is not theirs.

"Persons who locate this amount of money in a bag should really have presented it to the appropriate authorities, because [a] person does not leave a quarter of a million dollars in the street," he said.

Clifford, who lost his Macquarie Bank job, was this afternoon sentenced to an 18-month good behaviour bond.

The cash, which Magistrate Longley said may have been dumped by a criminal, has never been claimed.

I wonder if this guy will get to keep the money seeing as nobody has claimed it?

Government/Courts will claim it after 3 years (not sure on the time length) and use it to send the fat politicians *cough* beazley *cough* on paid vacations.

Aah, the wonder of democracy.

That one was a mystery.

I like the term for the crime - "Stealing by finding".

There's got to be some good alternate uses for that phrase. In other ways, it seems sorta contradictory. I start to wonder if there are other little known laws, such as "assault by touching" or similar.

I'd hold on to it. I wouldn't spend any of it and just sit on it for one month. During that month I would check with various authorites, watch the newspapers, search the internet etc. to see if anyone reported losing a large sum of cash. If it was reported I'd turn the money in. If it wasn't reported I'd assume it was drug money or some other ill gotten booty and keep it.

Id take it but then return it the next day. I wouldnt be able to do anything without having that nagging feeling in the back of my head telling me to return it. So yeah I'd return it.

I'd turn it into the police, funny though as a kid I’d always dreamt of finding a large sum of money and now as an adult I have actual use for it, but, I wouldn't want to keep it.

Neverfate 10-14-2005 09:12 PM

I would keep it. I would chalk it up to good fortune. Even severly religious people sometimes view such windfalls as a gift from God. I think it's more like a karmic happenstance. Less religion, more superstition I always say.
