Man Killed In Storms; Andover Sustains Most Damage
Extensive Damage Was Reported Throughout The Area
(WCCO) Minneapolis A man was killed in the severe storms that rolled through the Twin Cities Wednesday night, police said.

According to officials, a falling tree branch killed a 45-year-old man just after 7 p.m. on the 5200 block of James Avenue North in Minneapolis.

The victim's name was not released, pending notification of relatives.

Several houses in Andover were damaged by the storms, which produced high winds and hail, and cut power to more than 160,000 people in the Twin Cities metro area.

Tree limbs, lawn furniture and other debris littered the neighborhood at 138th Avenue and Palm Street in Andover, Minn.

The roof of Kris Hondl's house was partially ripped off. Hondl said she and her family went into the basement when it looked like the storm had "bent over" the trees outside. While downstairs, she heard hail.

"It sounded like water was pouring right into the house," said Hondl, 39. "Part of the roof was ripped off so water was pouring into the house."

Despite the damage, Hondl said, she thought her house fared well compared to other homes in the neighborhood.

Anoka County Sheriff Bruce Andersohn told WCCO-AM that no one was hurt in the area.

"As it appears right now, we've gone house to house ... and everybody seems to be OK," he said.

Several storms marched across the central part of the state, one after another. The first storm included straight-line winds: Wind gusts of 67 mph were measured in Monticello, and gusts of 68 mph were recorded in the Crystal area, said Karen Trammell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

"There are huge reports of wind damage all across the northern and eastern part of the Twin Cities," Trammell said.

Hail ranging from golf-ball size to 2-inches was seen near Dassel, Trammell said.

The National Weather Service also said there were two reports of tornado touchdowns: a trained weather spotter reported a touchdown in Atwater, Minn. at 6:15 p.m., and a member of the public reported a tornado touchdown in Brooklyn Park, Minn. about an hour later. Neither reports could be verified until a damage survey could be completed, said Beau Gjerdingen, of the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service planned to survey the damage in Andover on Thursday, to determine whether that was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds.

At least three power transmission towers in Maple Grove were also toppled, said Mary Sandok, spokeswoman for Xcel Energy.

Damn, it's good to know you're all right and able to post. Weather is getting whacko for just about everyone it seems. Hopefully the cleanup won't be too bad.
Good luck, kubz

I thought this was a pollitical thread, and wondered, "Isn't Strom Thurmond dead already?"

I was thinking the same but chose to keep quiet... wasn't sure it would be seen as funny in the wake of destruction...

Glad I wasn't the only one thinking about senatorial zombies.(Although that may be a bit redundant)

And, enough of the threadjack, sorry about that.

I'm glad to hear that there were no injuries to you or your family, and I hope your insurance company treats you well.
