Have You or Are You Still Serving in the Military?
I am just curious as to how many current or ex military members we have represented here on TFP? If you would, list your dates of service, branch, places you were assigned, and job specialty.
Here's Mine: 67V - Observation/Scout Aircraft Mechanic/Crewchief Maintained and flew in OH-58 A & C model Helicopters (Bell Jet Ranger) Fort Jackson, SC - Basic Training 1983 Fort Rucker, AL - Advanced Individual Training - 1983 Fort Campbell, KY - B Trp 2/17th Air Cav, 101st ABN DIV - 1983 - 1986 I was born in Wurzburg, Germany in 1964 and lived in Giessen, Germany from 1973-1976. I also lived in Virginia, California, Alabama, and Texas as an Army Brat. After discharging from the Army in 1986 I went on to work for Lockheed Support Systems, Inc. at Fort Hood. We maintained a fleet of Army helicopters to include OH-58 A,C&D, UH-1H&V, UH-60, and AH-64 A & D. I worked for Lockheed until November 1998, which included a tour in Iraq (pre 9/11) in supprt of 1st Cav from Fort Hood, as a civilain aircraft mechanic. I have a lot of happy memories from the military, and am proud to have served. I only wish I had continued til retirement. But, I was young and dumb when I got out, eager to make good money as a defense contractor employee. I don't regret that, but it would have been better to have stayed in. So, if you've served, or are serving, I'd like to hear from you. If you have not served, feel free to add to this thread, and that explains the poll.

Meh, that is an old, dead thread. Besides, this one has a poll.
![]() U.S. Army 1991-1995 (Initial enlistment of 2 years 21 weeks, then a two year reenlistment) 12F - Engineer Tracked Vehicle Crewman. Got out as an E-4/Specialist. Basic training at Fort Leonardwood, Mo. First duty station was Baumholder, Germany. While there I was sent to Livorno (Leghorn Army Depot), Italy to rebuild engineer vehicles to sent to Bosnia for rapid deployment. I spent 28 days in Italy doing that. Reenlisted and was sent to Fort Hood, Texas. While there, I was deployed to Panama for 78 days for Operation Safe Haven. In Panama I came up for reenlistment again. The Army wouldn't let me reclass into EOD (Explosives Ordinance Disposal) and jerked me around on my bonuses, next duty assignment, etc, so I got out. |

Excellent, another ex-Army guy. I see you were at Ft.Hood. When were you there? My family and I moved there in 1976, returning stateside from 3 years in Germany. The folks bought a house in Copperas Cove in 1979, and I lived there until HS graduation in 1983, and then I joined the Army myself. I returned in 1986 after the army, and stuck around until 1998. I still have friends there, and my buddy owns his own insurance agency there in town, Camps Insurance, and I visit there about once or twice a month.

I was there from Nov 1993 to Jun 1995. Actually, May of 95. I took 45 days of terminal leave.
![]() ![]() I was in 1st Cav, 8th Engineer batallion. Our barracks was right across the street from the MP station. I hated Fort Hood. Hated it. Still hate Texas to this day. No offense. ![]() |
