flash your boobs or don't get rescued...
I cant find this story online, but it was reported by one of the major UK tabloids today
According to the story, two British girls were trapped on a rooftop in rising waters, and the police that turned up on a boat ordered them to strip. When they refused, the laughing police sped off, leaving them to drown (potentially) The source is not the most respectable, but if the story is true it is absolutely disgraceful. I hope every measure would be taken to investigate allegations of this nature, and punish with the ultimate severity any guilt that was discovered.

I'd say that is made-up since they are complaining that people don't want to leave. New Orleans=Flashing boobs. Kind of funny, but not if it were really true. But if I were stuck on a roof and almost ready to drown, I'd flash my boobs to get saved.

Now being reported on the BBC
Briton slams US rescue 'shambles' Staff and guests chased one group of looters from the building A British tourist stranded for five days with his wife and seven-year-old son in a New Orleans hotel has called the US relief operation a "shambles". Ged Scott, 36, of Liverpool, told BBC News that hotel staff and guests had received no help from the authorities. Police officers had taken "souvenir" photographs of stranded people begging for help, he added. He told BBC News he had helped to mount security patrols in the hotel while shots rang out nearby. "We saw people making their way down the rivers that were streets, dragging their last belongings with them," Mr Scott, a bus driver, said. He told BBC News he had been on his annual holiday at New Orleans' Ramada Hotel with his wife Sandra, 37, and their seven-year-old son, Ronan. Snapshot photographs Without their driving licences they were unable to hire a car and flee the city ahead of the storm and decided to remain in their hotel after being warned the Superdome would be too dangerous. The handling of the relief operation had been "horrendous", Mr Scott added. "I could not describe how bad the authorities were - taking photographs of us as we are standing on the roof waving for help, for their own personal photo albums, little snapshot photographs." He said at one point a group of girls was standing on the roof of the hotel lobby and called to passing rescuers for help. I could see bodies floating in the water Ged Scott 'My brother is still missing' "They [the authorities] said to them 'well show us what you've got' - doing signs for them to lift their t-shirts up. The girls said no, and they said 'well fine', and motored off down the road in their motorboat. "That's the sort of help we had from the authorities," he said. Mr Scott added: "The only information we got from anybody in authority was if a policeman came past and we shouted to them out of the windows. Patrolled "The only information we ever got off them was negative, 'Do not go here. Do not go there'. "There was no, 'Are you OK? Are you safe? Have you got water?'. "Most of the time they would ignore us." New Orleans remains under water At night, the police presence disappeared altogether, leaving the stranded guests and staff to defend themselves. "You would hear shots ringing out during the night and that was one of the most worrying things, because we had no security," Mr Scott said. "We patrolled the halls and checked the doors throughout the night in the hotel - but if someone had wanted to come in, there was not much we could have done about it." They had a torch - but, Mr Scott said, "you knew if you went down in the dark the torch would only make you a better target". Nevertheless, the staff and guests had managed to chase one group of looters from the building, he added. He then had had to wade waist-deep through the filthy water to barricade the hotel's doors. "It was like wading through an open sewer. "It reeked to high heaven and made you want to vomit. "Outside I could see bodies floating in the water." Mr Scott told BBC News he had ripped wires attached to speakers from the walls of the flooded hotel bar and tied tables and chairs together as makeshift barricades. Bayonets He had then run back upstairs for "the best wash I have ever had" - using water from the toilet cistern, he added. Looters also tried to sell the stranded guests mobile phones, radios and clothes. When they were finally rescued it had been by Louisiana game wardens, who had entered the hotel with rifles and fixed bayonets, Mr Scott said. Now back in the UK, he said he was worried about the effect the experience had had on his son. "He was fantastic - but he has been exposed to things no seven-year-old should ever see and it is bound to come out in the future." In an earlier response to calls by former US president Bill Clinton for an inquiry into how the federal government responded to Hurricane Katrina, Linda Saccia of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said it was too early to criticise the relief effort. "There are 30,000 responders, rescuers, recovery people, law enforcement that are working night and day and I wouldn't say anything or even quite frankly think anything that would be negative towards their hard work. "The studies that will be done afterwards will prove and show what did and didn't go well," she said. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4217022.stm

First of all, it says "authorities". For all we know, it was a bunch of moron volunteers in a boat they owned themselves. He mentioned police several times in his story, but did not call these people police. I don't believe for a second that these were people who worked for any actual agency.
What I fail to see is the part where he talks about trying to help the girls who were denied it by these "authorities". On top of that, he whines about how the police "disappeared" at night, and he heard shots ringing out. And yeah, I said whines- a lot of people were a lot worse off than he was. He had a roof. He had a home to go back to. He had his life, his wife's, and his kid's. And how safe is it for the police to be out at night? If they all get picked off at night, then it will be complete lawlessness 24 hours a day. They have to be smart about protecting themselves as well. I'm also curious why this article was even posted without any commentary to go along with it. "Isn't this disgraceful" in 2 sentences doesn't cut it. This feels like an eager attempt to mindlessly slam the states because of a random news story that paints it in a bad light. What I'm saying is- is there a discussion here? After any big event you get stories like these popping up. I would hope that the stories are not true and people are probably just trying to sell papers and/or bad mouth americans. It seems that is what this story and thread are trying to accomplish imo.

"FEMA representatives call out to survivors, "Show us your tits for emergency rations!""
This is the caption to a picture on this week's Onion. Maybe... this started a rumor? Kinda like how a China paper (I think it was China) thought that the Onion was a credible source when the Onion wrote about how Congress was going to relocate if they didn't get a retractable dome for the Capitol. At least I hope it is just a made up story, regardling the stranded people. I don't see how someone can do the good deed of rescuing people only to say things like that to them. However, the bad things humans are capable of hasn't surprised me in a while. |

Well, the comments I had in terms of the story were in my original post... this article was just confirming it was a genuine report and not "tabloid trash"
In terms of it slamming america... I think it isnt unreasonable that people would be angry for their compatriots to be treated this way in a foriegn country and a friendly country. Clearly the alleged conduct of one group does not signify the state of a nation - but stories like this do make people angry, I dont think its that hard to see why. Quote:

And I should add, if the story isnt true - then it is very bad reporting indeed, and I would hope action would be taken against news sources that carries the story if any intentional deception took place.
It is inflamatory (sic) in a time when America's friends should be coming to her aid, if the story is a lie, it is somewhat of a dispicable one. If the behaviour of these authorities is accurately reported, I can only describe that as dispicable also.

The second story didn't talk about flashing boobs.
I bet someone read Onion... think about threads here on TFP, look how often someone just reads the topic and maybe some of the post, then post. like sadistikdreams. Now they read your post, and tell it to their friends too. There is a long list of people who now think it really happened, when there isn't much proof that it did.

Oops, I just noticed that the "show us what you got" article has a date before the Onion's latest issue came out on the internet. So... I guess the Onion cannot be considered as inspiration for it.
I can imagine this really happening, especially considering the state of mind some people probably get themselves into when faced with what is pretty close to anarchy. I was outside a few days ago, my neighbors' roof was getting reshingled. A woman walked down the street, and one of the roofers actually whistled at her. That seems like such a generalization, I was actually surprised that someone would actually do that, I thought it was just some sort of urban legend, but I think it goes to show that if there is an opportunity for some men to act like dipshits then it is highly probable some men will act like dipshits. |

I always wonder when the respected media like the BBC pick up a story like this.. does that make it news, or are they just further reporting a bogus news story.
Unfortunately, the pedigree of the reporting agengy does not always mean it is true.

I was not meaning this comment as gender specific, I am just saying that certain people, when faced with a chance to do good, will do the complete OPPOSITE of good. Example: the multitude of scamming "charity" websites which arose after Katrina. Most people tend to pull together after tragedys like this, but I was commenting on the select handful of heartless people who do whatever they can for themselves. I wasn't trying to offend anyone! I read this story right on the tails of Katirna. I don't think it's true, or at least true to the report. The new twist is that now the women are "girls" and they come from Britain. I think this new wrinkle is because nobody in their right mind thinks NOLA natives would refuse to show their boobs for rescue.
In a city of a million could this happen? Yes. It probably happens every third month in NYC. But "Ged" has no beef as far as I'm concerned. What happens in NOLA, stays in NOLA. Las Vegas is just a shabby pretender next to NOLA. Nobody goes there to study bible lessons. Some police looted, abandoned their posts, and acted poorly. I'm sure many more "volunteers" enacted their own brand of opportunism. This story is an outcome of that fabric. If it is true, they should have just showed their damn breasts. They don't have anything special or new that several magzines and websites haven't already exposed, ad nauseum.

Negative comments aimed at humanity generally. I'm quite ok with that. |
