Please remember to turn off your TV before going to bed...

I very rarely forget to turn off the TV in my bedroom before going to sleep. It has happened maybe 2 or 3 times in my life.

Last night was one of them.

I woke up at 2 am to the final scene of "Taxi Driver", and Robert DeNiro was happily shooting in my bedroom.

I screamed "HOLY FUCK!" rolled out of bed and reached for my rifle, which I always keep on my right side when sleeping in the army.

I realized that I was in my own bedroom, and not in some god-forsaken warzone. I slowly peeked up and over the bed, looking at the TV. There was DeNiro, shooting some guy in the head.

My dog was sitting at the edge of the bed, his head cocked to one side and looking at me as if to say "what the hell has gotten into you?" He said "woof" just once, in his quietest voice, to let me know that everything was okay as far as he could hear.

I laughed for quite a while, but still couldn't get to sleep the rest of the night.

Please, fellow TFP'ers, shut your TV's off before you retire into sleep.

Does anyone have similar stories to share? Did Conan O'Brian creep into your dreams and freak you out, and then you found him on the tube when you awoke? Did Jamie and Adam from Mythbusters turn you into Buster the dummy, and you woke up just in time to see the poor dummy get blown up in a dumpster?

Discuss...

You know, most TVs are equipped with auto-shut off. You can set the timer to turn it off after a certain period of time...

This happens to me when the radio alarm goes off for my wife (she gets up hours before I do). If she stays in bed listening to the radio for a bit, inevitably the CBC enter my dreams... It's a bit unnerving at times.

I've had several dreams where the song playing on the radio when my alarm goes off becomes part of the dream. Thus, I do not use the radio as an alarm any longer...it's not nearly as effective as an obnoxious cellphone ring.

I fell asleep on my recliner once, while the TV was left on. (Mrs. O'Rights saw fit to just leave me there)
I woke up, at what must have been 3:00AM, from one of the scariest nightmares that I've ever had. Only to discover that...it...was no...nightmare. They had actually given Tony Danza...his own talk show!!!!
The horror...the horror...

I sometimes forget to set my timer and wake up to hear some televangelist screaming at me to send him money.
Either that, or I'm on a fishing boat with Bill Dance.

Like when you have a hot dream about a threesome with Mary Lou Finlay and Barbara Budd? THAT would be unnerving. I don't think I can handle that much smugness in one bed.

Dozed off once while the gf was watching "Hotel Rwanda." Woke up during one of the fight scenes. She has surround sound and a great video system.

For a moment there, I was back in... well, never mind where, but I was back there.

After my heart returned to a semi-normal rate, I was OK. I managed to keep my PTSD dream-freakout quiet, but only just.

Yes, that would be something.

Barbara Budd

Marylou Finlay

Only they are on the air while I am making dinner or eating...

No... early morning CBC radio is either CBC overnight (the best radio from around the world), the Business Report, the news or the morning show getting started...

The worst is when I get some Radio Netherlands documentary about Pygmy tribes... those dreams are just odd.

By the way... I am getting sick of the CBC strike... I need my CBC radio to be back to what it was...

I almost never watch TV... so it's a very, very rare occassion that I accidentally leave it on.

The last time this happened, there was some cheesy movie on... and i woke up because the tv was making sounds like someone knocking on a door. Well, I barely heard it and had my head down, so i didn't see the tv was on... half a second later, the door gets kicked in. It's insanely loud. I have a great surround system and my subwoofer is right near my bed (because that's where I watch movies). In my near-awake state, i thought someone had busted in my bedroom door, grabbed a knife I keep attached to my nightstand, and lunged at the door.

The door now has a knife wound, and I have a great story of my craziness. lol

(never been in the armed forces, and I keep a knife by my nightstand because you never know... i'm paranoid like that.)

Some of my buddies talk about the PTSD and coming home and adjusting to sleeping with the spouse after being away for 9 months. One guy had to move because he lived right by a rail yard in town and whenever the train cars would be switching in the yard it sounded like incoming mortar rounds. He thought he was being bracketed, over and over again.

Another guy broke his wife's nose becasue she snuck up on him and pounced on him (playfully) as he napped on the couch. He hit her before he was awake. Try telling that one to the social worker...

And me, well, if I haven't posted it already, my wife thought it would be cool to tickle my neck while we were cuddling on the couch. It felt like I had a spider on me. I had some VERY BAD EXPERIENCES WITH SPIDERS, and totally lost it. I was curled up on the ground, crying, and she said "Okay, I guess I won't tickle you anymore..."

That would be funny, listening to someone knock on the door and then hearing it get kicked in.

BTW: Who is that guy with the soothing voice on the CBC radio? I think the name is Yorgen Goth, but that can't be right. When I hear him on the radio when I drive, he totally relaxes me, and I become the super-courteous driver. LOL, I should listen to CBC more often.

Ross Porter, host of CBC 2's After Hours does this as well... the only problem is he is on late at night... and getting sleepy behind the wheel is never a good thing that late at night.

My wfie was driving from Connecticut to New Jersey, and I had just dozed off in the passenger seat. The radio played some sort of flute or bird noise. I jerked awake and started desperately fumbling for the cell phone, since I figured we were in New York, and you can't use a cell phone without a headset while driving. Cracked my wife up to no end.

This happened to my friend with the pulp fiction soundtrack. He had been leaving his radio alarm on "Play CD" for a few days, and kept it that way, forgetting he had switched the cd earlier that day.
So next morning, his alarm goes off and instead of whatever cd he was used to hearing, he hears:
"Everybody be cool, this is a robbery!!"
"Any of you fuckin' pricks move and I'll execute every motherfucking last one of you!!"
...and then I believe there might be shooting?

....anyway, he woke up screaming and he had a roomate at the time who woke up screaming either as a response to the cd or as a response to him screaming. They both jumped out of bed, still screaming for about 30 seconds even after they realized there wasn't actually anybody in the room trying to shoot them.
I laughed pretty hard when he told me.

I can't sleep unless the tv is on or I am exhausted. I go to sleep with Nick@nite and end up waking to Spongebob Squarepants.....

I rarely dream but when I do it's just as I am about to wake up and yes, the tv has alot to do with the dream that wakens me.... if it's a depressing show I'll awaken depressed and if it's a comedy I'll awaken in a funny mood.....

I awoke once to HSN and felt the need to buy cheap jewelry with real diamonique stones in them for only 3 easy payments of $299....... when I told Amelia she moved out and divorced me..... but I have the real diamonique jewelry.

Funny you mention that, I dont have a problem when I normally sleep but only when I nap mid day because a TV somewhere in the house is on and my naps are light.

The worst day was i was trying to sleep and every station was covering the Columbia destroyed and I kept thinking that I was on it or I needed to find out what happened. SO I make it a habit to turn off anything making noise while I sleep. I cant even sleep in cars because I hear the road and think while I sleep I am about to tip over.

Is there some way I could train myself out of this i wonder?

I sort of did the same thing early yesterday morning.

As I was laying in bed, sorta half awake half asleep, I was dreaming that something was comming towards me/at me, and suddenly something in my brain said that someone tossed a live M80 into my bed. So I reflexively hopped out of bed onto the floor.

I ducked for cover on the floor beside the bed! In the process of having tossed myself down onto the ground, I got a major carlie horse in my leg. Ugh! I still don't know what came over me. Must have been too much cafeine and all the stress lately from work.

I usually fall asleep with some quiet music going. One night, my old girlfriend and I fell asleep to star wars a new hope, and I woke up to the attack run.

Look at the size of that thing! Red 2, cut the chatter! Lock x-foils in attack position! I'm hit I'm hit!

I was disoriented for a good 20 minutes..

i often fall asleep to infomercials or law and order... its a bit disorienting to fall asleep watching Law and Order:SVU and waking up an hour later to Monk....

Another time i went to sleep with a sound soother on making forest noises (birds and whatnot). I barley even dozed off before thinking that the birds were attacking me, so i started to flail my arms and legs around and hit the solid stone walls a few times before waking up and shuting off the "soother".

When I was in highschool I had a bunk bed left over from when I roomed with my little brother. One night I gopt really drunk and fell asleep on my bed. Now, my phone at the time had the most jarring ring ever. About half an hour after I layed down it went off and I sat straight up in my bed, bashing my forehead into the bottom of the top bunk. I had a red mark going across the top of my forehead for the better part of the week.

My worst story comes from a night of heavy drinking,

i proceeded to turn on the tv and pop in a DVD.....Old school.....
so i get about 1/10 the way of the movie and pass out i wake up 5 hours later to that annoying title screen music(if any of you have watched the movie you know) but the worst part of it was i couldnt find the TV or dvd remote and this was the old crappy tv were only the menu and vol + button worked so combine that with my current state of drunk/hangover it took me i swear 45min to turn off that damn music.....by eventually unplugging the tv(and later realized i unplugged the clock too and was late for work.....)

well since then i have gotten a new tv with a SLEEP timer....the best idea ever

Sometimes People like having something running when they sleep. I have a few friends who leave their radios on, and two that leave their tvs running when they sleep. I don't know why they want some "sound" when they sleep when sleep is usually paired up with "quietness".

Over a small portion of the summer, I have to share a room with my two step brothers. One of them likes to fall asleep with the TV on, and is too lazy to set the sleep timer (or find the remote so that he can do it). The other night, I was startled out of my sleep by the beginning of the Green Day music video "Wake me up when september ends," the part where the boyfriend starts yelling at his girlfriend before he leaves for war. Ended up NOT turning the TV off and went back to sleep. I was woken up by that same music video at 6:30AM, to find that my other step-brother hadn't set his alarm and wasnt up for work yet :O. If his brother hadn't left that TV on, Ryan wouldn't have made it to work that morning....
