My dog is a thief....

4:30 this morning I take my motorcycle out of the garage to head off to work. The motion light kicks on and my front yard looks trashed. Looking closer I see its not trash but belongings, and my dog, sitting there as proud as he could be. I don't know how long he was out last night but he managed to collect: 3 different flip flops, a welcome mat, a 2 gl. watering can, a step stool, a reebok, a can of carb cleaner, 2 newspapers, a little yard sign saying welcome, a bicycle pump, a quart of power steering fluid, liquid adhesive remover, a spray gun for the hose, an ash tray, a cane, charcoal lighter fluid and a handful of other things. In a hurry I toss everything in the garage, thinking I hope nobody drove by and saw something of theirs on my lawn. Now I don't know If I should make a little sign and put this stuf on my driveway or toss it?

What would you do? I'm thinking of putting the stuff out so the owners can claim it. For the most part this stuff doesn't appear as garbage. The little welcome sign still has dirt on the stake.

As for the dog I can't figure out how he escaped, I just hope he had a little more fun than rippin off the neighbors.

Sounds like your dog had a pretty busy night. As for what to do with the items he aquired, I would just clean them up a little, and set them off to the side and see if someone asks about them or if they come up in conversation. If not.... he's safe. If not, he's busted...but you at least have the items to return. You could mention that he has been counseled, and no longer steals... Good luck

Dang, none of my pets have brought me anything... my cat is pretty lazy though, so I don't expect much from him.

I think you should just keep them and see if anyone says anything to you, put the welcome sign out in your own yard and see if the owners will notice or just think you're a kleptomaniac.

A doggie scavenger hunt... that's too funny...

Is this an unusual occurrance for the dog, some of the things he took would make me nervous, becuase i'm assuming he used his mouth to steal the items... if some of those cans punctured you'd have a very sick pup on your hands...

Now that is hilarious! What kind of thief is this? I've heard of cat burlgars but a dog heading out in the dead of night to scrape the neighborhood is awesome. Photos would have been ideal...Nice work!

Perhaps he found time to sniff a couple of asses and call on a bitch or two.

oh m gosh i haven't laughed that hard all week!!

I would agree with what others are saying, clean it up a little and put it out on the sidewalk with a sign that explains the situation...

But seriously, what an adorable dog you have! Our dog does that Inside the house, so i can relate, they just like to collect items, it's so silly.

thanks for the laugh and smile Give your dog a pet from me

Drop off your dog at a jewelry store and wait for him to bring the loot home.

That is hilarious. What a BUSY, no longer bored doggy!

If it was me I would probably make a sign that says "Yours?? My dog is a thief." and stick it out with all the rest of the stuff. It would easily explain the reason you ended up with the stuff and no one could say you hadn't made an effort to get the stuff back. Besides - can you imagine the laughs the neighborhood could get from that?

Maybe your dog didn't steal any of this... Maybe your dog is the neighbourhood's king dog and all the other dogs just brought this booty as tribute...

That's hysterical! I like the sign blaming the dog and the pile of goodies. Who could be mad, you didn't leave him out on purpose! ... I wonder if the flip flops were inside or out?

Reminds me of the time back in HS... I came home to discover that my dog Shadow, a 160-lb newfoundland, had carried all of my stuffed animals from my room upstairs to all the chairs in the kitchen and living room downstairs. Nothing on the floor... she put them all on chairs. It was funny, and a little freaky! Like she had her own little tea party!
Dogs are so fun.
