Heads or Tails?

Believe it or not, there is actually a purpose to this ;)

I'm flipping a coin in two days with a friend of mine to see who gets to be shafted and gets a significantly smaller room in the apartment we're living in for the year. After many attempts on my part for something less random - something which I would have had more chances of winning - he stuck out for a random coin toss. So, vote for one...tell me which I should call. And, if you have any other tips (besides a one-sided coin) on how to win the coin toss, let me know. I'd love any way to increase my odds! :)

edit: one sec forgot the poll don't respond to this yet

SecretMethod70 08-22-2005 02:17 PM

Heads or Tails?

Alright, added the poll.

maleficent 08-22-2005 02:19 PM

What coin are we flipping? Quarter? a generic quarter or one of the state quarters/ what year is this quarter?

he wouldn't settle for a game of rock/paper/scissors
or doing an old fashioned finger shootout... (the one where you call odds or evens and each of you puts in one finger or two fingers, count the total and is it odd or even)

onodrim 08-22-2005 02:21 PM

Well, there's no real logic to my vote, tails has simply always been my favorite of the two. :p Besides for that, tail is another word for ass, and who doesn't love ass, so...go with tails. :)

SecretMethod70 08-22-2005 02:23 PM

well, I suppose I could argue for a game of rock paper scissors....are the odds in that less than even?

As for what coin....no iea....does it make a difference? If so, I'll push for the one with uneven odds ;) I'm guessing just a regular quarter though.

edit: mmm ... ass.

Grasshopper Green 08-22-2005 02:27 PM

I've heard that the heads side is *slightly* heavier than the tails side, but I could be wrong. Anyone else heard of this? Anyway, that's my vote :)

I have heard that as well, for most American coins. The heads side being heavier means that it lands DOWN slightly more. I believe it's something like 49% heads/51% tails, or along those lines, when done tens of thousands of times. Very small advantage, but it's something. :D

Charlatan 08-22-2005 02:33 PM

Everyone needs a little tail...

JumpinJesus 08-22-2005 02:41 PM

That's odd, I figured the results of the poll would be 50/50 so far, but it isn't.

Weird.

Anyway, I too have heard that you get tails about 51% of the time due to the fact that heads is slightly heavier. I've got no proof or anything other than hearsay to back that up.

maleficent 08-22-2005 02:49 PM

ono skewed the results royally -- she said tail, now all anyone can think of is ono's lovely tail ...

i think this is a corrupt poll :)

Grasshopper Green 08-22-2005 02:55 PM

D'oh!! I was stupid and didn't think that with it landing down, tails would be up *slaps self*. Ok, I should have voted tails....*sigh*

I was going to say heads, but there's no arguing with this logic.

Cross-Over 08-22-2005 02:59 PM

Definitely heads.

To me, tails doesn't even exist. I never pick tails.

I have no valid reason why, but if I were you, I would pick heads.

amonkie 08-22-2005 03:15 PM

Hehe.... Coin Toss it will be, huh Secret? :p

I say Tails too... but only cause you're going to be one Very Happy guy when you win :D

uncle phil 08-22-2005 03:37 PM

go two out of three...

present_future 08-22-2005 04:04 PM

I always call heads. No matter what.

Blackthorn 08-22-2005 04:33 PM

HEADS! It's always heads and if it's not then you're not using the correct two headed coin...;)

RogueHunter65 08-22-2005 06:00 PM

Another big thing is, will the coin drop to the ground or is it the hand catch and flip on the back of the other hand. Because if it lands on the ground, then definately go for tails. But if you catch the coin and do the traditional flip on to the other hand reveal...then go for heads. This coin flipping stuff is an exact science.

Kaos 08-22-2005 06:01 PM

I rarely lose a coin toss. Always go with my first gut instinct and almost always win. My advice, and instinct says take Tails. Good luck!

cj2112 08-22-2005 06:55 PM

i just flipped a half dollar that my grandpa gave me before he died 25 years ago, it came up heads, so I'm goin w/ that.

Fremen 08-22-2005 07:20 PM

You could always cheat and use a double-headed or double-tailed coin. ;)

Lwang9276 08-22-2005 08:47 PM

i always choose tail and it seems to win... well at least 50% of the times lol :)

cowlick 08-22-2005 10:54 PM

I vote head. I always ask for head.

Gilda 08-22-2005 11:07 PM

Just before flipping the coin, say "Heads I win, tails you lose,", then flip it real fast before he can object.

Hee hee, it's foolproof.

If however, he's not a fool, go for tails.

BTW, I voted tails, cuze I'm just more into that sort of thing.

Gilda

Astrocloud 08-24-2005 12:24 PM

It depends on which sexual position you prefer. If you prefer missionary then it's heads. Doggystyle -then go for tails.

It's all very logical really.

SecretMethod70 08-24-2005 12:50 PM

Well, the coin toss(es) will be tonight. Thanks for the input everyone...Tails started out with a strong lead, but heads is the winner. If my plan falls through, I will be choosing heads.

"What plan?" you say? Well, it turns out that for most human flips, the coin ends up with the same side facing up as it started with pre-flip. I did a very small, scientifically poor test of this the other day and flipped a coin 30 times - it landed the original way 66% of the time. So, if I can manage to be the person who CALLS on the first and third flip and also see what side it starts with facing up, I shall call that sde. Otherwise, I shall call heads :)

Daniel_ 08-24-2005 12:52 PM

You flip - he calls.

That way if he WINS you don't have to feel that you gave it away.

If he LOSES, you didn't steal it from him - he called WRONG.

SecretMethod70 08-24-2005 01:07 PM

yeah...it's a no win situation if I lose really...if I flip and lose, I'll just think "what if I had been in more control?" I see what you're saying though.

analog 08-24-2005 01:10 PM

...you can get as much tail as you want after the coin flip. For the coin flip, however, go with heads.

canuckguy 08-24-2005 01:15 PM

I usually went with who ever found the apartment should get the bigger room. However did the leg work...etc. if not i say go for tails. as stated before, everyone likes a good piece of tail..... good luck and think BIG!

if you lose make sure to be a bad sport and sit and cry. just to rub it in a bit and take some of the sting of victory away! kidding of course.

SecretMethod70 08-24-2005 01:16 PM

lmao! If I were only an ass....it would certainly be fun to do that

You wanna live with a pissed off roomie blaming you for winning the room toss?

Not cool. :|

But if every time he bitches you can say "well you called it"

coin flipping: Information From Answers.com
Quote:

Experimental and theoretical analysis of coin tossing has shown that the outcome is predictable, to some degree at least, if the initial conditions of the toss (position, velocity and angular momentum) are known. Coin tossing may be modeled as a problem in Lagrangian mechanics. The important aspects are the tumbling motion of the coin, the precession (wobbling) of its axis, and whether the coin bounces at the end of its trajectory.

The outcome of coin flipping has been studied by Persi Diaconis and his collaborators. They have demonstrated that a mechanical coin flipper which imparts the same initial conditions for every toss has a highly predictable outcome.

Morover, they have demonstrated both mathematically and experimentally that the underlying physics of coin tosses appears to have a slight bias for a caught coin to be caught the same way up as it was thrown, with a probability of around 0.51. They also state that stage magicians and gamblers, with practice, may be able to greatly increase this bias, whilst still making throws which are visually indistinguishable from normal throws.

Since the images on the two sides of actual coins are made of raised metal, the toss is likely to slightly favor one face or the other. This is particularly true if the coin is allowed to roll on one edge upon landing; coin spinning is much more likely to be biased than flipping, and conjurers trim the edges of coins so that when spun they usually land on a particular face.
I can't find any links on magician's biased coin flipping, however.

hangin on the edge of my seat....what'd ya get????

Siege 08-24-2005 01:28 PM

I forgot how, but because service is sometimes decided with a coin flip, one of my former coaches was telling me how to tell what the flip would be. He was showing us all these weird things which I think none of the students understood. He managed to flip the coin to get any side he wanted several times in a row.

JStrider 08-24-2005 02:05 PM

lol... I'm voting heads cuz i like head... altho ass is good too...

let us know how it turns out...

Sweetpea 08-24-2005 02:08 PM

Heads :)

Although, since you're probably allot cooler than your roomy, you should get the better room  right? :)

Not flipping for another hour or so, then I have a haircut. I'll post later tonight though.

Daniel, either of us will be accepting of the results, so it won't be a problem throughout the year. Honestly, if I end up with the smaller room (it's about 1/3 the size of the larger one...dunno why they'd bother building a place like this) I'll manage just fine. I'm pretty laid back, and it just means I'll take over the living room too! :p

Misz 08-24-2005 02:41 PM

Tails you win, heads he loses

Make shure you tell him how you want him to flip the coin, make him flip the coin so he flips it then it lands on his hand then he puts it on his other hand thats facing palm side down.

If he flips it head side up then its more likely to land on tails, If he flips it tail side up then its more likely to land on heads (science experiment in year 8).
