Fuck yeah, that'd be some sweet meat. You could have it with as much/little fat as you wanted. You could make it technically flawless or extremely similar to naturally grown meat. You could even grow it into different shapes. How cool is that.

Excellent point!

I've been thinking along the lines of what is help. I don't see this as an end to world hunger... It's more along the lines of "Give a Man a Fish". What are the things that would really help raise the quality of life for people on the planet?

Personally I would like to see more resourses, time and energy put into the research of creating sustainable environments as our current methods of farming, mining and development, contribute much toward the desolation of our natural resourses.

To respond to the OP, for me it is not a question of 'if I would eat it'.. it is more 'will we have no option but to eat it'?

I won't eat McDonalds, why in hell would I eat manufactured in the lab "fake meat". It's just totally disgusting!

after you get over the ground up pig hooves and cow testicles, they're not that bad!

Bobo - you're a hoot! Thanks for the laugh!!! Ha!

The.Lunatic 07-15-2005 01:48 PM

If i see the people who grow it eat it sure

Then again i do like the idea of killing animals for food i'd have to take up hunting to get my fix :D

Xazy 07-15-2005 02:18 PM

My take is different. It is not a question of the food, but if it is kosher and if i could eat it.

paulskinback 07-15-2005 03:22 PM

I can't imagine that the meat would have anywhere near the same flavour and texture that normal "animal" meat would have (I, like many others, prefer not to imagine the cute furry animals that my dinners come from) purely from the fact that that animals, and the meat they carry, are perfected from the movement and, all be-it little exercise they get. The texture and flavour of meat comes from fat and muscle sinue that they grow over time. I can't comprehend how a scientist can create this in a petrie dish.

OK - humans can create many things from stey cell research, which i'm all for - but how can you create a good cut of steak from a laboratory table... I mean KFC are already creating chickens (and maybe by mistake I give them that) without properly formed wings and legs... can you imagine a cow without legs etc squirming on the floor and without a proper brain just to give us some "nice cheap meat"?

I think i'd rather be a veggie.....

pattycakes 07-15-2005 06:22 PM

think about the farmers :-(

.... the meat would prolly be branded

made in china

im a vegan..and now im a confused one!! i thnk i personally would see this as a good idea..obviously it would have to be 'perfected''..to a certain extendbefore it would become popular.

If it tasted good then why not- though I would be worried about the impact on agriculture- change happens, but here in the us we are already outsourceing everything else (and some agriculture too, come to think about it)

RCAlyra2004 07-19-2005 01:07 PM

Where do I get some.... I am hungry!

Sounds good enough to eat already! hell if it's good enough for NASA astronauts it's good enough for me.

One of my quips about McDonald's (taken from a longer statement as I was removing the bread from and combining the tasty parts of six double cheeseburgers,) that seems to ring true is, "I'm not saying it's unsafe for human consumption, I'm just saying that there are certain colors meat shouldn't be, and grey is one of them." I then proceeded to take one bite that brought a bit of each of the 12 burger patties into my mouth.

So yeah, I'd eat it. It can't possibly be worse than Slim Jims (this may be a topic for another thread, but why does each Slim Jim have a serial number?)

Charlatan 07-20-2005 05:46 AM

I asked my vegitarian wife if she would eat this type of meat and she said it would remove all of her problems with eating meat (i.e. she doesn't eat meat because of the harm to animals not because she doesn't like the taste).

Of course, as I suggested above, I would need to know a lot more about it health wise.

Two side notes:

1) I agree that fresh water is a *much* greater concern than food.
2) Is it just me or is this meat like the dish of the day at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe -- If you don't mind, I'll just nip out the back and shoot myself.

Seer666 07-20-2005 11:45 AM

Meat is meat. As long as I could still get a good bloody steak that tasted like steak, yeah, I would eat.

Martian 07-20-2005 12:55 PM

I'm in the 'meat is meat' camp. From what I can tell, this is no different in makeup from a carved up cow; so long as it's been thoroughly tested and there aren't any apparent issues with it I don't see what the problem is.

Johnny Pyro 07-23-2005 10:00 AM

Meat grown in a lab? I dunno. That just sounds gross. I don't think I would eat it. Its against nature and the food chain.

Astrocloud 07-23-2005 10:10 AM

Common people. You are just being wimps. Dont you know that with enough Catsup

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that what stem cell research is for?

alansmithee 07-24-2005 01:47 AM

I have a hard time eating anything that wasn't previously alive, so this would probably be a no-go.

bartgroks 07-24-2005 11:52 AM

if it was cheap and tasty I would gladly munch some.
