Time or Money, Which is more important to you?

For most of my life it seems that I either have the money to do the things that I want; but can't find the time or that I have the time and find myself dead broke. Which is more valuable to you, your time or your money?

While I'm far from affluent, I've been working 60 hour weeks for the last 2 years. Maybe the grass is just greener, but I really want my time back.

Lasereth 06-18-2005 05:04 AM

I gotta say time. I hate being broke, but I hate not having time and being rushed even more.

At one point I would have said money... because without money all the time in the world doesn't mean much...but the past year or so, I've been on the cusp of total burnoutness that time is where it's at - I'd kill for a full nights sleep -- to just go thru a day and not be tired... to not feel stressed that there is not enough time to do something...

Seeker 06-18-2005 05:18 AM

I have worked and had money, and I've been at home the last year or two. I would have to say that I appreciate my time the most.

I find when you have money and you work, your living standards seem equal the income you bring in. Since being home and being on a tighter leash, I find I put my money to better use and find better efficiency.

I value my time, so I don't mind the compromise.

Blackthorn 06-18-2005 06:06 AM

Time is invaluable. I've had a CAT 1 ticket opened with God requesting a 25th hour be added to every day but so far there has been no reply. The SLA has clearly not been met on this request... :)

ngdawg 06-18-2005 07:16 AM

Maybe down the line I'd vote for time, but right now that's all I've got. Bills are past due, fridge is empty...so I voted money.
Like the song says, you never know what you've got til it's gone.....

nukeu666 06-18-2005 07:57 AM

i need time to earn money...so time is more imporatnt

f6twister 06-18-2005 08:00 AM

Time for me too. Between the dog, the kid, the wife and the job, I really need more time in the day to get everything done. More time to play with my son or the dog, more time to pay attention to my pregnant wife or just more time to sit and relax. Work takes up most of my day with 8-12 hrs but since I am the primary income, I can't work less hours. Oddly enough, it seems like the only way I could get more time in my day right now is to have money (at least enought to quit my job). Oh well, I'm off to play the lottery.

greeneyes 06-18-2005 08:08 AM

Ok, so I'm the one person so far who has said money... but I'll clarify.

Right now money is more important to me because I am young and don't have much to spend time on. The goal for me right now is to work as hard as I can, make as much money as I can, and prove myself as an employee as much I can so that later when I have a family, I will have greater flexibility with my time.

So in short, money is more important right now because time will be of utmost importance later.

Siege 06-18-2005 08:20 AM

Ngdawg also said money greeneyes =)

I'm going for money too. Money right now is rather tight for me. I'm paying for my own tuition ($4500 a semester really hurts..), and my dad is kicking me out of the house right after I end fourth year. So not only do I have to pay tuition, I gotta save up for a place to live in the future.

I think it really becomes a question of age (for the most part). Kids have nothing but time, while adults who are in the workforce with a steady salary don't really need anymore money.

Of course there are exceptions

SiN 06-18-2005 09:35 AM

with some money I could buy me some time ;)

eh, seriously though ... i vote 'money', at least at this point in life.

soemone above mentioned about being on a tight budget and spending money well ...

well, one can also learn to spend time efficiently.

but eh, depends on what you want, and need ...

:)

hunnychile 06-18-2005 09:36 AM

I vote for a third option: good health.

RoadRage 06-18-2005 10:57 AM

Money comes, money goes. Time only goes. Time is more important to use wisely.

Rodney 06-18-2005 11:41 AM

Money is something you get by giving up your time to someone else. If you're lucky enough to have a job that fulfills you and does not take away too much time from other aspects of your life, you have a win-win situation. But most of us are not that fortunate.

I seen people with time but no money, and people with money but no time. If you are resourceful, you can use some of your time to acquire tand do hings that people with money have to pay others to do or get for them.

I knew a guy who didn't work for a couple of years; his wife did. But he bought broken or worn power tools, rehabbed them, and used them to renovate his house. He also got a dead car for nothing, fixed it up and got it running. And he ran a political campaign to save library service in his area. What's all that worth?

Ah yes, thank you. When I voted, it said that only one person had voted money and since I know I voted money, I assumed it was me.

By the way, I thought you made an excellent point in your last paragraph. I think younger folks have a feeling of invincibility. I know that when deciding, I literally said to myself, "I have all the time in the world but there will come a day when I won't so I want to make as much money as I can now for when time is more of a precious commodity."

sixate 06-18-2005 02:25 PM

Money!!!!

Work an assload now, save, invest, and you'll have all the time in the world later with all the money you need.

akito 06-18-2005 02:37 PM

Money is more important to me. Without it, I lose everything I've worked for. I work hard for my money, and I have the nice things that I have because of that money.

amonkie 06-18-2005 03:04 PM

Time - money didn't buy my family, friends, my love, my passions. Money makes it easier to do the things I want, but it didn't get the foundation for me.

Helpher811 06-18-2005 03:42 PM

In a more practical sense, when I have vacation time to spend, and the company says they will pay me for it if I don't use it, screw them.
The gov can tax my money, but not the time.

Time is more important, because you really don't know how much you have, or anyone else has, therefore you can't buy it or save it in the normal sense. You can only spend it.

Another angle is that time isn't something that is transferable. No matter what I do to save time for you, it may not actually happen. I suppose that comes from the fact that time is dfferent for everyone.....a little more than money...

Sweetpea 06-18-2005 04:06 PM

Time.

But then again, i have enough money to support the roof over my head and food in my stomach every day . . .

I would imagine if i didn't have my basic needs met, i would say, Money.

but as it stands, I value my Time more than the money i make at either one of my jobs.

Money to a point. It really sucks worrying about it all the time. It also sucks telling your kids there's no money for something they really want, or need.

After the necessities are taken care of, time is better. You only get one chance to coach a little league team, and watch your kids play sports. They remember that more than the new pair of shoes they didn't get.

Taking it out a ways, you can't put a price on time spent with grandchildren.

Conclusion: After there's a roof over your head and food in the fridge, the phrase "Money doesn't buy happiness" becomes very true.

ronan 06-18-2005 09:07 PM

yeah, time, is directly related to money... but, for me, being a security guard, and a student... i prefer time.. i dont care a great deal about money, because, well, i'm living at home, and if it comes down to it, i can easily survive off my parents..

Time is needed for study, and, i believe in this so much so, that i'm going to do volunteer work, in my field of study.. this wont equal money right now, but it will hopefully give me some direction for my future... i'm just lucky i think i can get away with this..

Gilda 06-18-2005 10:14 PM

It's close, but I voted money. Right now, saving and investing money is important so that in a few years time when it's time for children, I'll have the time to spend with them without having to worry about money. But also, I love my job, so I don't see it as trading my time for money. I don't just mean I love the job, I mean the work itself, much of it, is actually fun.

Martian 06-18-2005 10:25 PM

I'm too ambitious to settle for enough to live on. I reckon if I put the time in to build the necessary skills and contacts now to make a lot of money, down the road I'll have enough money that it'll be less of a priority and I can make time for what's really important.

With enough money you can make all the time you need, but if you don't have any money you spend too much time working to pay the bills. If that makes sense.

Scorps 06-18-2005 11:28 PM

Time over money but both wouldn't hurt....I would love to watch my kids grow:)

Suave 06-18-2005 11:29 PM

Time by far. That is why I am currently an independent contractor (ie. unemployed). Who cares about money when you're miserable?

DEI37 06-19-2005 06:26 AM

I understand where those of you that say time are coming from. I would love more time. However, I NEED more money. Things got tight lately, and time doesn't pay the bills. Dollars do.

wabbit 06-19-2005 07:17 AM

What's more important, playing this game that we call life, or keeping score?

Also, when your time on the field is up, is the most important thing how many points you added to the scoreboard?

Money is oft times misunderstood. Overrated by those who lack 'enough', underrated by those with apparent overabundance (in the eyes of others).

pan6467 06-19-2005 07:29 AM

Money comes and goes just like easy women. It is always replaceable and will never bring true happiness.

Time is fleeting, you grow older and see all the waste that you had. Friends and family that you lost track of because you put money or something else in front of them, and you can never get that time back.

I"d rather spend time with good friends and feeling loved than having a million in the bank and no time to see my loved ones.

Money is important but it doesn't drive me and I pity those that it does. I know what it did to me, I had plenty of toys and more than most but I was never happy and I truly never knew who loved me because of what I had..... and I always wanted more because more meant I was important. But important to whom? Friends who I couldn't trust because I thought they were after my money. Women I couldn't love because I wanted more money?

So keep the money, I'll take the time. When I die I would rather say I spent my life helping others and loved than fighting for more while others starved.

And if you don't like it or think I'm a wimp because of it..... I pity you because that tells me you put money ahead of love and helping others.... the true reasons we are put on this Earth.

(My personal experiences with money...... I understand there are those that need it and work hard for it.... and I am saddened that our society finds it so wrong to make sure those who do the best they can and work hard to just survive aren't worth decent wages and vacations...... but the CEO's and rich NEED those porsche's, lambourghini's and trips to Jamaica.)

Pip 06-19-2005 10:08 AM

Good question. I picked time, because I can never get enough of time to spend as I please! I work evenings and weekends, and the pay is good, but the fact that I can't go see a play or party with my friends a lot of times suck.

cellophanedeity 06-19-2005 10:34 AM

Right now money is more important to me.

I'll (hopefully) be working a part-time and a full time job for the rest of the summer in order to help pay for school and to be able to move out with my love soon. We'll see how this changes if I get the part-time job.

Willy 06-19-2005 11:03 AM

As long as I can pay the bills, give me the time any day. Screw working 60 hours a week.

Zeraph 06-19-2005 11:32 AM

I think it's not so much a choice, but rather where you are in the world. If you're starving and poor, money would look pretty good. But if you already have money then extra time looks pretty good. So really its a balance.

I agree.

Personally, I have never been rich, and I might not ever be, but I have had lots of free time, and I love it and realize it's value.

Since I am not rich, I can't relate, but I would imagine that lots of money is nothing without having the time available to enjoy it's uses.

ryfo 06-19-2005 03:53 PM

Time. I also think you live with the money you have. Our household money used to have two incomes and now only has one, but I cant say what really has changed except the fact that we both dont have to spend all our free time doing household chores, shopping, paying bills etc. So vote me in for time.

Cuatela 06-20-2005 08:57 AM

In order to make money, you need time. So I'd say time is more important.

splck 06-20-2005 09:15 AM

there are many things more important than money, but today's society seems obsessed with it as though it's one of the most important.
material wealth ain't worth shit if you don't have time.

I'll take time.

KellyC 06-20-2005 09:42 AM

For now, money. I'm young and I have lots of time, but also poor as a bum. But as I get older, time will be more important to me.

stevie667 06-20-2005 10:32 AM

Time, by far.

I've had money, and no time. Moneys nice, but when you can't spend it, that sucks.

I have time without money, granted i can't spend much, but i can do so much more stuff.

You can have all the time in the world, just not while your alive...

Charlatan 06-20-2005 12:08 PM

At this very moment I will say money.

At other times it has been time...

The more money I have the more time I can purchase.
