"Artist" is just another label. A cookie cutter definition that doesn't really mean anything because it either doesn't apply to anyone or it applies to everyone. When everyone is an artist no one is an artist.
I refuse your labels. I am not an artist. I am not anything. |

I remember talking about this for awhile in philosophy club in h.s...
One thing, I was wondering, would writing be considered art ? Writing such as novels and especially, are in the same realm of artists like painters and sculptors. You could expand it and say that anyone who talks or writes a message a writer, but I wouldn't label communications to be art just because it's a word or being communicated.

My husband likes to tell people that I am "crafty". I make beaded jewelry, most of the time I make it to give as gifts though I have sold a few pieces. I like to make wire jewelry too. I also write poetry and have dabbled with some painting. I am artistic but I don't know if I would call myself an artist.

I'm not an artist. I'm cool with that. I think the word is one of those overused, generic compliments where the meaning is often so wishy-washy the remark sounds more sarcastic than flattering.

I would say that an artist is someone who creates just for the fun of it. Because they enjoy it. Not necessarily because it looks beautiful, or it inspires awe in people's minds. It is like they are in a "Zone" where they can create things of beauty. The only time I've ever experience something like that is when I first started programming. I made my first game in c++, and I was in that zone the whole time, cause time just flew by and I paid no attention to anything else other than the computer.
I don't think I classify as an artist. I play the guitar for fun and make up rhythms and what not, but I don't think that qualifies. That programming is all I've done. Whenever I get caught up in a creativity streak, I can always envision the finished product looking like a masterpiece, but it doesn't quite come out like that. I guess you could say that I've got the vision, but no gift. |
