How stupid can you be? May the farce be with you...

Two Star Wars fans were critically injured in the UK when they tried to replicate the light sabres used in the movie by filling glass fluorescent light tubes with fuel, police and a news report said today.

Mark Webb, 20, and an unidentified 17-year-old girl, were planning to make a video recording of a duel like those in the just-released blockbuster film Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, Britain's Press Association news agency said.

They were injured when one of the makeshift sabres exploded in the woods in Hemel Hempstead, north of London, yesterday evening.

Hertfordshire Police said a third person present when the explosion happened had been questioned. The two who were injured were in critical condition at a burns unit in Chelmsford, Essex.

"At this stage we are unable to confirm the exact circumstances, but glass tubes and traces of accelerant (flammable substance) were found at the scene," police said.

Fucking hell.

I really, really can't understand how someone can be so stupid as this. Honestly. How do these people tie their own shoe-laces in the morning?!

Cue references to the Darwin Awards and Jackass...

Yes, I read that.

I prefer to not think of it as gasoline, but rather as chlorine for the gene pool.

I'm wondering if they happened to smell like another flammable liquid when this all went down...

My guess would lean toward 'yes.'

Apparently the Police have in custody the third person involved, and the videotape from the camera he was holding while filming them.

Yet somehow, in a TV interview last night, the police also said they were still trying to figure out what they were doing. hmmmm.... Maybe Chief Wiggum should watch the tape?

Ha! Who says the ridiculously stupid aren't punished???

I don't wish them permanent damage (or not much, anyway), but I am SO glad they were immediately smacked down for this. Idiotas!

This is demented on so many levels. Glass tubes for a sword fight isnt dumb enough.. lets fill them with fuel and LIGHT THEM ON FIRE. This way they wont just shatter, but they'll spray flaming liquid everywhere. Good times!

Guess they should have played it safe in the imaginary world of Dungeons and Dragons. Then they could have used super-duper swords that could turn kryptonite into water. Suppose they were just trying to keep it real.

I don't fault them for trying to recreate the movie...but I do fault them for how they replicated the sabers. There's a much easier way: white broomsticks, then get a computer geek to add glow effect after the action was filmed. That's about how they do it in the movie anyway (except the lightsabers are specially made, not white broomsticks)
