Today is National Armed Forces Day. Thank you to all of our military men and women for serving us. You mean more to me than you'll know, and I love you all for doing what you do! =)

Yeah, no doubt. I gotta say I don't support this war, but I undoubtedly support every single soldier over there risking their lives. And they're doing it so I don't have to worry about losing mine. Thanks guys and girls, we love you.

Godspeed Eric, Thomas, and James!!

This is something that is not said nearly enough.

A few years ago, i was working at a youth camp, and given the responsibilty of comming up with a closing for their campfire program. I chose to do a flag retirement to end the night. I started off talking about the history of our flag and then called any veterans who were with us that night to come forward and tell us when and where they served. We thanked them for their service to our country and then recognized those who were no longer with us because they had lost their lives in service. We fired 21 volleys while naming different battlegrounds where brave men and women had fought and died in service to our country, and then retired the flag.

Following this, one of the older veterans who was with us that night came up to me and said that this had been the first time that he had ever been thanked for his service in front of a large group of people. I found this very moving, that for as many ribbons we see tied, or magnetic stickers attached to vehicles, all of us who will turn out and stand along a parade route, pledging support for our forces, that this man had never been publicly thanked for his service.

Thanks for this, Sue. My husband is a veteran of the war in Iraq and served nearly 5 years in the Marine Corps. My brother in law is in Iraq right now with the Air Force.

My husband was thanked in front of family at a recent family gathering; a friend of the family brought her husband with her and he is a pretty conservative guy. My family is about as liberal as you can get, and thus extremely anti-war and not terribly supportive of the military. The husband said quite loudly so everyone could hear that while he doubted many had thanked my husband, he wanted to say thank you for risking his life. I was touched, and everyone else was visibly uncomfortable, which was fine by me. I'm not a supporter of the war, but my husband did risk his life over there, and I thanked him when he got home.

In the spirit of a previous poster, hurry home Mike and Tony!

Thank you for this thread. It is always nice to know people care. I've been in the Navy for about 6 1/2 years now, and it never gets old to have people let you know they appreciate what you are doing. Of course, I have only heard the words spoken twice sense I’ve been in. As silly as it may seem, it does hit a soft spot when some one you’ve never seen before and probably will never see again walks up and shakes your hand with an expression of real gratitude on their face.

Oh, Hell yes. Thank you.

Hey as much as I'd like to buy one of those insipid "I support our troops" magnets to slap on my car, I already spent the money. Whenever I see a vet selling the goofy, little fake poppies to support disabled veterans, I grab the biggest bill in my wallet and stick it in his hand. Then I ask him where he served and thank him.

This war...this administration...sigh...don't get me started. But I support my troops 100%. I will continue to agitate, to cartoon, to write and to make political donations all with the idea of bringing our troops home safe and sound.

God bless the brave men and women who we put in harm's way.

I'm so glad to hear that it does mean something. I wish I could take credit for it, it was purely a copy cat move on my part after I watched a friend do it... Whenever I am in the airport... I always spot at least one or five service people in mid flight transfer, and I as much as possible I give a thank you... sometimes I think I've scared a few of them - -who's this crazy lady hitting on me ... but it 's a good feeling...

My dad served in Korea, a close family friend was a 17 year old marine in WWII, a great big thank you to all who have served, and all that are doing their best to serve in the future.

I've been playing Rome: Total War a lot recnetly and I've come to love the quotes that each game load presents.

I googled for some, but couldn't come up with the list of quotes that they use, but here are some gems I found from other periods:
http://www.fortliberty.org/quotes/quotes-war.shtml

Quote:
Let us recollect that peace or war will not always be left to our option; that however moderate or unambitious we may be, we cannot count upon the moderation, or hope to extinguish the ambition of others. -- Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist No. 34

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget ye were our countrymen. -- Samuel Adams

Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it. -- Thomas Paine

I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity. -- Dwight David Eisenhower

There is one source, O Athenians, of all your defeats. It is that your citizens have ceased to be soldiers. -- Demosthenes

Don't fight a battle if you don't gain anything by winning. -- -- General George S. Patton

It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell. -- William Tecumseh Sherman

Some people live their entire lifetime and wonder if they ever made a difference to the world. Marines don't have that problem. -- United States President Ronald Reagan, January 1995

Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory. -- General George S. Patton, Jr.

Diplomats are just as essential in starting a war as soldiers are in finishing it. -- Will Rogers

I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain. -- John Adams in letter to Abigail Adams, May 12, 1780

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. -- John Stuart Mill

If a man hasn't discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live. -- Martin Luther King Jr., June 23, 1963. Speech in Detroit.

i too want to say thank you, and that i hope they all come home safely. i'll quote a man who's got a whole lot more right to be talking about matters of life and death:

As I had another helping of country ham,
She said "We ain't never been to Vietnam,
"And there's a bunch of our boys over there."
So we went – to the Orient: Saigon.

Well we got a big welcome when we drove in,
Through the gates of a place that they call Long Vinh.
We checked in and everything got kinda quiet,
But a soldier boy said: "Just wait 'til tonight,
"Things get noisy. Things start happenin'.
"Big bad firecrackers."

Well that night we did about four shows for the boys,
And they were livin' it up with a whole lot of noise.
We did our last song for the night,
And we crawled into bed for some peace and quiet,
But things weren't peaceful. And things weren't quiet.
Things were scary.

Well for a few minutes June never said one word,
And I thought at first that she hadn't heard.
Then a shell exploded not two miles away,
She sat up in bed and I heard her say: "What was that?"
I said: "That was a shell, or a bomb."
She said: "I'm scared." I said "Me too."

Well all night long that noise kept on,
And the sound would chill you right to the bone.
The bullets and the bombs, and the mortar shells,
Shook our bed every time one fell,
And it never let up; it was gonna get worse,
Before it got any better.

Well when the sun came up, the noise died down,
We got a few minutes sleep, an' we were sleepin' sound,
When a soldier knocked on our door and said:
"Last night they brought in seven dead, and 14 wounded."
And would we come down to the base hospital, and see the boys.
"Yes!"

So we went to the hospital ward by day,
And every night we were singin' away.
Then the shells and the bombs was goin' again.
And the helicopters brought in the wounded men.
Night after night; day after day.
Comin' and a goin'.

So we sadly sang for them our last song,
And reluctantly we said: "So long."
We did our best to let 'em know that we care,
For every last one of 'em that's over there.
Whether we belong over there or not.
Somebody over here love's 'em, and needs 'em

Well now that's about all that there is to tell,
About that little trip into livin' hell.
And if I ever go back over there any more,
I hope there's none of our boys there for me to sing for;
I hope that war is over with,
And they all come back home,
To stay.

In peace.
Amen.

I agree 100% with you, clavus.

Being on a college campus and being in the age group that contains the most active soldiers...I have seen lots of friends and acquaintances get shipped out since Sept. 11th. My best friend from high school had to live for a year without her husband after they had just married as he was on active duty in Kuwait.

I never forget what they do for me and my country and I always thank them profusely for what they have done and keep doing.

As a Canadian soldier, I would like to thank the American service men and women. We hold you in high regard, and your example is a tough one to live up to...

Every american service personnel I have met has been a credit to your forces and to your nation. Turned out in proper fashion, with decency and respect overflowing. I have often seen my fellow soldiers comment "if only WE could be like that..."

The next time I run across one of you, I'll buy the beer. Canadian beer, that is.

Hey thank you guys, too. My last deployment we had a Canadian frigate, HMCS Toronto, with us as an integrated part of our Carrier Strike Group. We did an exchange program with them throughout the deployment, and though I wasn't one of the lucky few picked to go over there, all of my buddies who did said the same thing: "It's small, cramped and noisy, but they have BEER!"

It does mean something, and I'll give you a hint. If they are scared about "some crazy lady hitting on me" they have to be Air Force. Cause us sailors would offer to take you someplace privet before our flight. No real sailor would ever run from a good looking lady.
