Pleasant little surprises that make your day.

So I'm discussing comic books over on Comic Book Resources a month or two ago, and someone, noticing that I"m a teaher, asks me what I think of PS 238. I have no idea what that is, and I'm told that it's a comic book from Dork Storm about an elementary school for paranormal kids, ie, kids with superpowers. This is right up my alley, so I go over to the Dork Storm web site, and find that they have back issues all the way back to #1 available, so I order the complete set, 1-11.

They arrived a couple of days ago, and I set them aside. I get them out today, to bag and board them, and I get a nice, pleasant little surprise.

Each of the 12 issues is signed and has a character sketch on the cover by the writer/artist, Aaron Williams. I double checked, and nope, I didn't order special signed copies, so this was just a nice extra thrown in for free. I've been so delighted all day. That I'd get a little extra something, something so nice, gave me a warm fuzzy.

What pleasant little surprise happened to you lately that gave a little lift to your spirits?

I've moved back to my parent's house for the summer to save on costs when working and this morning I opened to cupboard to find that my mother had gone out and bought honey nut cheerios yesterday just for me. It's all i would eat for breakfast when I was a kid.

Got an e-mail from someone who is normally wrapped up in herself, full of helpful ideas about the Banff Centre in Alberta, where I'm headed for the next three weeks, for the first time. For example:

"- Don't eat every meal at the Dining Hall, as you'll run out of money on your meal card. They deduct about
$10/meal each time you go. Have breakfast at the Gooseberry instead. It's a great juice bar inside the
rec centre across from the Dining Hall. They have great muffins and bagels etc. and you can use your
meal card there. It's cheaper and right up your alley!"

There was about 15 similar points in her list and it must have taken her at least half an hour to compile. I thought it was a nice selfless to do, and it was written just for me.

I am a member of many dating services online. One girl wrote me saying she was moving to my area and wanted to know what there was to do. I compiled quite a good list that took about 20 minutes to make for her. She was no great catch and I didn't expect any kind of long term relationship, but she didn't even send an email thanking me. After not seeing my sister-in-law for eight years, we have had a wonderful visit until...she got in my face that *she* was going to do the dishes tonight, and I got right back in her face that she wasn't.

She said, "I've never had a sister before, but I like having one now." Almost let her do the dishes. I am blessed to have grown up with sisters.

I work at a pizza place, and a few weeks ago, when I was really not feeling my best, a regular came in with her 7 year-old son.

He asked if I was the one who took his mom's order, and I said I was; he then turned to his mom and said "She's the prettiest girl I've ever seen."

It made my month, especially since you know a child doesn't have ulterior motives.

I always liked it when some girls came up to me and say they want to marry me, happens more often then one would think.

Recently though my pleasent surprises come in the form of what my digital camera takes. Last night I had a photoshoot session with a great lady (pictures can be seen at my gallery, where is that? research it) and she was a pleasure to work with from minute 1.

Also Shani's random private messages out of the blue make me smile too, woo woo.

oh, snap, the deli's open again? Well, there ya go, that's mine...I think I need a tasty salami and fresh bread snack for after working out...
Actually, I had another one. I was at the used bookstore wandering around after I sold them a hardcover that I know they want badly (bestselling author and all that), and I found a cookbook of stir-fry recipes for the Wok, which I love to use. AND it had a chicke Tikki Masala recipe, which is my boyfriend's favorite food ever in the whole word. So, yay!!
Also, I love hearing about other people's things. If this thread ever dies, feel free to revive it!!

I got an e-mail today from one of my past teachers saying how much he enjoyed my final performance project. Since he is himself a composer and talented musician, I was flattered. Then he asked if I wanted to perform it later next year at one of the New Music concerts he puts together. Since this usually involves guest composers and performers who are already established, I was really honored that he asked. It was so unexpected and really gave me a renewed sense of confidence in my musical abilities.

Things that make my day:

Making somebody else feel good makes me happy. I try to say hello or make eye contact with somebody who doesn't often get the courtesy or human treatment, like service personnel. When I get them to smile, I get a little happiness-high.

When I get to pet a doggie.

When I can turn a few male heads.

Down to $10 in the checking, living literally on plastic, no job in sight-I decide to go to the grocery store for a tomato and a red onion-tuna sandwiches always were a comfort food and lord knows I needed that. I get in the express lane and the woman in front of me tells me to cut her since I only have the 2 items-I declined but she insisted. As I paid the $2 for my things, I thanked her a 3rd time and felt tears welling....sometimes we just need a kind kick in the ass.

*hugs ng* What a sweet lady, those small things can make all the difference in your day.
I've had a few rough months lately what with some hard-hitting news about my dad and other things, so when my best friend Kir tells me he's gonna spend a few days up here in August with me, It made things seem at least a bit brighter in my world. He had always talked of getting together, but now that he's making plans, it seems much more possible. I certainly hope the plans work out, cause we'll have a blast this summer.

But don't let that taint your desire to deliver random acts of selflessness. If everybody were just a little bit nicer -- not necessarily in big ways but, more importantly I think, in smaller, more frequent ways -- we'd all feel a little bit more appreciated by the world, and thus be a little bit happier.
