The World’s First All-glass Undersea Restaurant

http://www.hospitalitynet.org/news/1...ant+and+hilton

Quote:
The Maldives | 15 April marks the day that the first ever all-glass undersea restaurant in the world opens its doors for business at the Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa. Ithaa* will sit five meters below the waves of the Indian Ocean, surrounded by a vibrant coral reef and encased in clear acrylic offering diners 270-degrees of panoramic underwater views.

“We have used aquarium technology to put diners face-to-face with the stunning underwater environment of the Maldives”, says Carsten Schieck, General Manager of Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa. “Our guests always comment on being blown away by the colour, clarity, and beauty of the underwater world in the Maldives, so it seemed the perfect idea to build a restaurant where diners can experience fine cuisine and take time to enjoy the views – without ever getting their feet wet. ...”

This is too cool!!!

They serve seafood there, so can you imagine some fish swimming by and seeing you there eating it's family?!?

Atlantis in the Bahamas isn't a total surround for the restaurants, there are tunnels like it, but it's amazing to watch a manta ray as big as a VW beetle glide past a giant grouper the size of a small horse as you eat your dinner.

My first thought was how much do you think you could see at night?.. but actually it could be really nice with some external lighting on some corals on the sea bed..

It also looks quite small and exclusive..

that would freak me out a little bit...

It looks a lot like the Darling Harbour Aquarium in Sydney- theyhave a big glass tunnel you walk thru, where you are surrounded onall sides by water...it's really freaky- I'm not sure I would want to stay and have dinner..

I think that would be awesome. I love everything about the sea, to think of it, I should've become a marine biologist. I took some class in high school concerning with Oceanography. Definately would amaze me while I would be eating. And I know I wouldn't be eating at all, I would be watching.

With the costs of construction and the small number of tables, I can't imagine how much dinner is going to cost. Still, I would want to eat there.

Wow...

That looks so amazing. If I'm ever in the Maldives...

I love the smal space, too. Only 14 people. And the price, $170-200/person actually strikes me as fairly reasonable for such an amazing place. Not at all like the random thousand dollar caviar omelettes sold at boring landside establishments.

With seating for only 14, I'm thinking you might have to wait months, if not years, just to get in!

*calls now to reserve a table for two for 2007*

On the one hand I'm thinking about how cool that is. Eating underwater surrounded by free swimming fish.

On the other hand, I think about eating underwater surrounded by free swimming fish with claustrophobia.

That is now officially on my 'list of things to do before I die'. Sure it would be expensive, but it's a once in a life-time thing and therefore worth the monatary setback. lol

That's what I was thinking. I just spent over $60 bucks per person for me, my wife, and her gf for moroccan food. I'd have much rather spent the ~$180 on myself to eat next to a coral reef!

Wow, that's incredible. I've always been fascinated by marine life and could spend hours at an aquarium easily. This would be an oppurtunity I would hate to pass up!

So, do they serve seafood?

I can't help but picture a family of fish swimming by...
Baby fish: Daddy, what are those humans eating?
Father fish: Dear, we should move along now...
Mother fish: Oh dear. Yes, timmy, follow me!
