I am seriously considering joining the Peace Corps and would like to know if anyone on the TFP has done this. If so, I would love to hear all about it and am mostly curious about keeping in touch with home. That's my biggest concern. I know I could do it, but I must keep in touch with my family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A professor of mine did it back in the late 60s and he says it's the one experience that radically changed his life. It forced him to see himself as an American bourgeois versus through some kind of rose-colored glasses. Given the stories he's told us in class of his experiences and time in Africa, I'd love to do it too. It sounds like a one in a million chance.

My father in law is a peace corps director for a few development programs here in Guatemala. For what he has told us, it's an amazing experience and you shouldn't be that concerned about getting in touch with your family. At least in Guatemala and El Salvador, is almost for sure taht you will have an Internet Cafe at a walking distance from where you are working. If you are interested on coming to Guatemala, PM me and i could put you in contact with my father in law.
