too old for the Navy?
So, I'm thinking of joining the Navy. I'm 27 though and I'm wondering if I'm too old. Am I? I don't want to talk to a recruiter yet cause I know once I do they'll never let me out of their grasp (unless of course I'm too old). Anyone who has been in the Navy know what options I have?

you must be between the ages of 17 (with parental consent) and 34 years old

Correct, 35 is the limit. What are you planning on doing? Somethings, like being a naval aviator or special opps. require you to be a naval officer. If you are a student or graduate of a four year college or university you can become a naval officer. That's the way to go.

It depends what program you want to do. A friend of mine was going to go into the nuclear program of the navy, but he's 27, and they told him he was too old.

If I do decide to enlist I want to study for the ASVAB before hand so that I do really well. Do I just take the ASVAB at MEPS or can take it somewhere before that? |
Go through the Officer Program - pay is higher etc - and the age limit is higher too. If you want to go nuke, then all you need to start is a BS, a good grasp of calculus and phsyics. The navy really needs nuke people so I think they will be more flexible with the age, especially for officers. Plus, nuke pay and bonuses are higher. Go to the Navy website for more info. Recruiters for Officers are more cool - no crazy pressure (it's separate from the enlisted men). All you need is a BS and 3.75 GPA, do well on ASVAB (you can get a book to help study). It is recommended to study for the test at least 2 months in advance (it's like the SAT's). The best part, if you're in school, they pay you to stay in and graduate - $2500 a month for two years. If you're a nuke, the pay is even higher.

Nukes are definitely in demand, and they usually get great jobs when they get out.
BTW, SEALS (I assume that was what was meant by "special ops") don't have to be officers. But you REALLY need to want to be a SEAL to go that route. |
