What is "Bad ass"?

How would you describe a person that is bad ass? What kind of characteristics would they have? What would they be doing that would make you think "wow, that person is bad ass!"

I'm working on a "project" and was hoping for some ideas.

Thanks!

Glory's Sun 04-26-2005 10:13 AM

bad ass is a state of mind. If I had to put it into characteristics I suppose I would say extreme confidence with an ability to do something out of the ordinary and get away with it.

maleficent 04-26-2005 10:24 AM

"bad ass" isn't always good... Bad ass is the anti-nice guy who really only thinks about themself. Bad asses tend to project a lot of confidence, but I'm not so sure they actually do have confidence. because bad ass is more of a "look", and without that look, the bad ass seems to be a little lost.

ObieX 04-26-2005 10:27 AM

when i think badass looks wise its usually something along the lines of this.

well here is what I have always known as a bad ass. http://www.badassmofo.com/mofoguide/moforules.html

Quote:

1. The BadAss MoFo is better than you.

If you are not a Badass MoFo, then you are inferior. The Badass MoFo could kick your ass, drink you under the table, scores more than you, etc.

2. The BadAss MoFo is never wrong.

The BadAss MoFo cannot, and will not admit he is wrong. Ever. Now, that does not mean he can say "The sky is brown", because that is not the way it works. The BAMF thinks about what he says before he says it, and speaks with educated refinement. The BAMF is wise beyond his years, and therefore others are too intimidated to challenge his opinions.

3. The BadAss MoFo can BS his way out of any situation.

What the BAMF does not know, he makes up. He can convince a surgeon that he was pre-med at Stanford. He can convince women that he is sensitive, when he is an asshole.

4. The BadAss MoFo pursues pie by any means necessary.

This needs no explanation. This is basically what every guy does, but the BAMF does it better.

5. The BadAss MoFo loves action flicks, pizza, and beer.

Duh

6. The BadAss MoFo hates country music, chick flicks, and McDonalds.

Again, Duh.

7. The BadAss MoFo will rise to any challenge of his manhood and TRIUMPH!

This includes chugging mass amounts of alcohol, wrasslin', and other displays of manliness.

Do you mean bad ass, or bad man?

A bad man would be John Preston (Christian Bale) in Equilibrium. He was THE man when he decided to go on a rampage, completly anihilating the bad guys, and looking good while doing it. He is a bad man because he can abuse his oposition, and is a good guy.

A bad ass i would probably describe as someone like Riddick (Vin Diesel) in the Chronicles of Riddick. He has the ability to be a bad man, but he's not 'good'. Therefor he is a bad ass. He's damned amazing, but you don't really want him to be around unless you have something for him to hurt/mame/kill that isn't you.

Not too sure if that helps, but thats about the best way i can describe it while slightly tipsy.

I think that's a pretty good definition.

A bit agressive, good at what they do, so they're definitly useful, but you don't want to invite them over for a friendly chat over a beer.

a cocky tough guy.

why is this in sexuality?

Carno 04-26-2005 04:53 PM

For me, badass transcends physical abilities.

Someone could be a badass at chess. Someone could be a badass at tic-tac-toe.
Are Navy SEALs badasses? You're damn right, but that's because they are in top physical shape and could kill most people they see, but not for the sole fact that they carry guns and kill people. It's because they are the best at what they do.

That biker guy? Probably not a badass. He's could be a nurse or some shit. I think it's impossible to judge how badass someone is by appearances alone.

Shady 04-26-2005 06:30 PM

When I think of "badass" I think of that guy in Gone In 60 Seconds. The guy that didn't talk, just kicked people's asses. What was his name? Sphinx. I think.

I think badass is more than confidence...its simply knowing that you are the best at what you do. Sphinx didn't even need to talk. His actions spoke for themselves. Get the look down similar to the Harley guy pictured above and you're all the way there.

stonegrody 04-26-2005 09:50 PM

Those are some bad ass responses. Thanks!

Chuckles 04-26-2005 09:59 PM

I think its somebody who is physically / mentally tough. Somebody who doesn't bitch, whine, and can handle whatever is thrown at them and get the job done. Somebody who's gotta do what has to be done, often times in the clutch.

chickentribs 04-26-2005 10:15 PM

Understated confidence mixed with ability. 10 year old spoiler: When Verbal (Kevin Spacey) leaves the police station at the end of The Usual Suspects and his legs straighten out as he walks down the street and your confusion begins to lift. He stops and snaps open a lighter for his cigarette before getting in the Jaguar and driving away. That simple motion of opening the lighter displayed more "Bad Ass" than all of Stallone's movies put together.

Fremen 04-26-2005 11:07 PM

RogueHunter65 04-27-2005 10:08 AM

To me, A badass is someone who is a rugged individual. He does what he wants when he wants. He is morally ambiguous. You cannot tell if he is good or bad. He will do something moral like not hit women but then beat a secret out of some guy in the back alley. He is tough and doesnt take any lip.

When I think badass I think Clint Eastwood's characters, Sam Spade, Batman, Tony Montanta, Vincent Vega, and Tyler Durden.

A badass like Tony Montana (Scarface) believed in being honest. He said, "All I have is my balls and my word and I break them for nobody" And yet, he was a drug dealer and a murder. He was fearless. They put a chainsaw in his face and he would not talk. That is badass.

They all had a sense of justice and yet would go against the law whenever they saw the need. A badass will do what you wish you could do or would do in the same situation.

That is a badass to me.

come on, real bad asses ride choppers, not stock sportsters (cough).

they arent HOG members all decked out in official leather, either.

I'd say someone who is bad ass would have a scar. A scar and a big knife. Maybe a scar, a big knife and and eye patch, even.

Someone who could take a cold shower, and I don't mean "not hot" I mean with the hot water completely off.

I think a lone wolf would be more of a badass than someone who would need to join an ogranization/herd.
:D
(no offense to anyone :P )

Gilda 04-28-2005 08:35 AM

Hmmm. Before reading this thread, I wouldn't have thought of badass as having positive connotations, but rather meaning "tough bad guy".

This definition gave me a giggle:

Confident
Skilled
exceptional
intellegent
admired

and this one:

Understated confidence mixed with ability.

Based on those definitions, I'm a badass humanities teacher. In a pink dress.

Janey 04-28-2005 08:41 AM

How about Bonds? I think that there have been only 2 Badass James Bonds: Of course Sean Connery, but honourable mention to Pierce Brosnan. they could both be ruthless.

I think that superheroes can be badass too. I'm a Superman fan. I think that in the pantheon of superheroes he is the Zeus archetype. But he is not a badass. Too goodie goodie. My favourite badass superhero is Wolverine (whoo hoo canada - support your local boy!).

Martian 04-28-2005 09:32 AM

I've always thought of it as a state of mind. I am badass because I choose to be. Not everyone can do that. It's confidence, ability and wit, combined with a certain look (for me, leather jacket, blue jeans, black tshirt and a cigarette). I'm not a bad guy, I don't think you have to be. I'm devoted to my girl and have quite a few friends. I can kick ass and take names when I have to, but usually the attitude is sufficient. I think all of that put togethermakes me what I am (whether or not you think I sound badass is your call. Others have referred to me as such).

In my younger days I used to fit the more traditional description (ie, asshole) but I've matured a bit lately. Also why I don't fight anymore unless I have to.

danthony12321 04-28-2005 07:58 PM

I remember seeing a picture on here some time ago of some mexican dude leaning up against a wall smoking a cigarette, and the story behind it was that the picture was taken while he was waiting to be exicuted by fireing squad. If someone has that pic, or remembers it, please post. That guy was bad ass

jorgelito 04-30-2005 12:20 AM

Hmmm....I always think of bad asses as not being self-proclaimed but rather they just are. No need to declare to to the world they are bad-ass, it's self-evident.

Martian 04-30-2005 12:23 AM

jorgelitio - So you're suggesting that rather than it being something you choose, it's more something that chooses you? I'm not sure that someone can completely disregard the rules (a common trait of a badass individual, I think) without being aware of it, but it's an interesting thought all the same.

Myself, I always figured we are who we choose to be.

jorgelito 04-30-2005 12:54 AM

Hmmm...good question. I don't know. I didn't really mean it in the way you said it. I guess it would be like maybe if you're a real bad-ass, you just know you are and wouldn't have to or need to proclaim it or declare it to people cause, quite frankly, a real bad-ass just doesn't care.

For example: Chewbacca doesn't going around posting pictures of himself saying "look at me, I'm bad-ass." He just is. Hans Solo never said, "Yo Leia, I'm bad ass, look at me, I have a cigarette dangling out of my mouth and I wear a leather jacket and fly the Millemium Falcon." He didn't have to. Less is more, deeds not words. Separates the doers from the talkers, the real-deal from the posers.

Hey, that would be weird though, if, like you said, "bad-assness" chose you and you had no choice but to carry out bad-assness: "It is my fate to be a bad ass. I reluctantly accept my pre-destined role." *rumbles off on Chopper* That's very comic-book like. Haha! I like it!

I'm not sure why I decided to use Star wars analogies, you know, Revenge of the Sith is coming out soon.... it's late....

TexanAvenger 04-30-2005 06:44 AM

A bad-ass has a moral code of their own that need not conincide with those of anybody else. This is why people like ninjas, samurai, pirates, etc are often considered bad-ass.

A bad-ass is prepared (mentally and physically) for anything. Their emotions can be guarded and hidden as quickly as a six-pack on prom night, but are strangely empathic when it comes to a relatively innocent person's plight. You do not want to play poker with this person; they can bluff easier than they can be honest and know how to make you keep betting even after you've lost all your chips. You could pull a knife on them and their eyes would not dilate nor would their pulse go up. You, however, might not walk away with all ten fingers in the order they were in when you pulled the knife, since you threatened them for nothing.

A bad-ass is skilled in many fields (preferably with field experience over book learning). They know how to take life just as well as they know how to save it, but lean towards the latter if anything. They can improvise the use of tools and materials, they can plan on a dime or just adlib their way through anything, or they can decide the best way to solve the gordian knot is with a quick downward motion of a knife.

A bad-ass does not like to bother themselves with fighting with others, it may even be against that self-set group of morals. But, if they must, they prefer to do it with their hands. If a weapon is used, it is a knife, not a gun. To wound somebody with a knife is an intimate thing, guns are not the tool of a true bad-ass. They don't like to fight, but will fight dirty when the fight is forced. Anything to end the fight as quickly as possible.

A bad-ass can swear like a motherfucker, but generally restrains themselves around women and children. They often have some kind of generalized pain underneath their callous surfaces, and almost always have a problem with society, but they don't burden other people with their beliefs. It is enough for them to know what they believe and be satisfied with that.

thingstodo 04-30-2005 09:17 AM

Someone with an I don't give a shit about anything attitude. Doesn't care about people.

tspikes51 04-30-2005 09:44 AM

Here's a few badasses as told by Maddox:

I like your definition. Personally, I think there are different types. For example, a really tough gang member is definitely a bad ass.

On the other hand, so is Jack Bauer on "24."

I saw an earlier definition I liked also, but I disagreed with it on one point: There are some definite badasses who like country music.
