Did you get/stay up to watch the funeral?

I wonder if you got up or stayed up to watch the funeral of John Paul II. I watched the funeral here on the east coast. It was an interesting global event.

Did you watch it? Why or why not?

Bill O'Rights 04-08-2005 04:52 AM

Mrs. O'Rights got up to watch it (then promptly fell asleep on the sofa, with the remote still in her hand). Why? I dunno. She's Catholic?
Me? I stayed in my warm and snuggy bed. Why? Because it was on at 3:00 in the blessed morning! I need every minute of beauty sleep that I can squeeze out. Besides...I can catch the highlights for about the next week straight.

superiorrain 04-08-2005 05:02 AM

I watch bits of it, but mostly didn't understand it all and didn't get up early in the morning. I only watched it because it dominated tv and thought it was one of those global events that i should take some time out to see.

prime time here - and 3 of 6 free to air channels had it live. Me? I watched the footy :)

I got better things to do than watch the funeral of the head of state for one of the largest religious organization in the world. Especially one that has a lot of problems this day and age.

Rdr4evr 04-08-2005 10:56 AM

nah, didn't waste my time. I had more important things to do...like sleep.

d3cemberist 04-08-2005 04:57 PM

Nope, I forgot about it. I was meaning to; I was asleep though...

Ace_O_Spades 04-08-2005 05:06 PM

I knew about it, but chose not to.

Why? I'm not religious, and religious funerals are boring... What with all the hymns and ceremony.

anleja 04-08-2005 05:59 PM

I didn't watch it, but it was taped. Don't know if I'll ever watch it, but, this is history, you know. I guess I am kind of a dork in that regard. How many times is there an event where two of the leaders of Iran and Israel shake each other's hands?

But yeah, I slept through it.

Joan of Arc 04-08-2005 07:30 PM

Very early this morning, I listened to it on the radio. It was moving. But then again I'm Catholic. :|

Lebell 04-08-2005 07:36 PM

I left the Catholic Church in part because of his policies.

So the answer is predictably no.

jhkayakr 04-08-2005 08:26 PM

no, however, it is history in the making, but will be replayed over and over on the cable news channels

guthmund 04-08-2005 08:48 PM

I'm not Catholic, nor did I need to be to appreciate the ceremony.

I didn't watch it live, but I did watch stretches of the replay coverage this afternoon while flipping back and forth with the ballgame.

At times it was very moving and the ceremony was awfully nice despite the ad infinitum of 'Vatican' experts commentating on the ceremony. I found it quite humbling when I noticed that the "most powerful man in all of Christendom here on Earth" was laid out in a relatively plain coffin in the piazza.

amonkie 04-08-2005 09:08 PM

I remember watching the Princess Di funeral way back, and I couldn't sit and watch a similiar formal procession for so long again. The funeral should be a celebration of a life well lived, even if only his mind was the most intact part of him at the end.

Kalnaur 04-08-2005 09:51 PM

I don't really watch much that happens on the TV. So no. But then, I don't really get reception here, so couldn't have even if I wanted to.

mokle 04-08-2005 10:05 PM

I did. Why? I respected him and his policies.

I consider him the most influential and respected leader since Winston Churchill.

connyosis 04-09-2005 06:39 AM

nope, didn't feel the need to waste my time with that.

That actually is tradition... He's buried in 3 coffins - one nested inside another.

The first coffin is a cypress wood, signifying his humanity
The second is made of lead (I don't remember what this signifies, but the dates of his papcy are usualy engraved on it, as well as other important dates to the pope.
the third is unadorned elm wood coffin, meant to symbolize dignity.

I didn't know that. :)

I never bothered to learn much about ceremonies in the Catholic church. All this is just so interesting. I don't mean to sound like an ass, because after all a good man died, but I never would have bothered to read up on any of this otherwise.

SVT01Cobra 04-09-2005 03:44 PM

I didn't watch it.

Might have, if I knew what time it was on. :P

Seer666 04-09-2005 08:19 PM

It was playing on the TV while I was working (we have the news on 24/7) but I paid it no attention. While I will not try to take away from what JP has done over the years, to say that him or his passing mattered to me would be a lie. My respect for the man is great, but i have none for the orginazation he lead. I jsut want to stop hearing about it at this point.

Doctor_Max 04-09-2005 08:46 PM

I didn't watch it, because I forgot it was on. If I remembered, I still probably wouldn't have watched it. I'm not a big religious person.
