Explore your world

A friend of mine recently told me about the following site. It requires that you download and install some software (timed trial) which does have some hardware requirements; i.e. you must have a decent video card. Anyway, it is absolutely fascinating to see how advanced and available, satellite imagery has become. Just type in an address (USA street level maps only), and the program will literally "zoom" you to the location, in 3D if you choose. Exploring the crater in Mt. St. Helens was pretty cool. Have fun.

How does this compare to terraserver?

If you do a search on "keyhole" you will find 3 or 4 threads in these forums containing posts on this software and other terra packages. Interesting stuff.

When I performed this "search" across all forums, it returned null. Sorry to offend anyone if this post is redundant.

I searched on "keyhole.com", perhaps I should have just used "keyhole".

No need to apologize. I just thought you might want to read the other threads as well. I downloaded the keyhole software a while back and it is interesting to look up places where you live or have visited. One guy saw his car in the driveway.

Yeah, I saw my car in the driveway as well. What's really amazing is some of the photography is in very high rez, such as Mt. St. Helens, the Grand Canyon, Niagra Falls. You can literally walk up the side of a mountain when using the 3D view. I've seen some of the other terra type software packages but I'm quite impressed with this one.

Oh wow...I knew Google Maps was good but not that good...that must be new within the last few days. "I can see my house from here!" Praise the Google!

Check it out...there is a 49ers game going on in Candlestick Park. And you can keep dragging the map east or west and go back around the world! The world must be round! For The Google says it is so!

it is so sick that there are no loading times when you have a high speed connection, its like this big dynamic map.

when you try using it out check out the search feature, which lets you pin point certain locations

The timing on this thread is so coincidental. As some of the previous posters have pointed out, you can use Google to see the same thing without paying a fee. You ask how? Google "just" bought the Keyhole technology lately.

Here's a link via Yahoo to an article about this that appeared this morning (4/5).

It's a fascinating world that we're living in these days!

Crazy

The only thingI noticed is that some of the sections are a bit old. For instance I zoomed into my office and there is a giant field where the company put a giant parking lot...two years ago or more.

Other than that I thought it was great fun. My car wasn't in the driveway so I looked around town trying to figure out where I was.

*I take that back* I had one office building top confused with another.

The Google maps aren't live, however. When I check out my mother's house, you can see in her backyard the pool we removed last summer.
