I suppose if somone said "you should grow it longer" they're saying both. I doubt unless they're a close friend though, that you'll take that "you should" part seriously. So they're not really telling you what to do, they're expressing an an invalid opinion. Harmless.

Either way, you typed well.

As to my level of tact, certainly Sauve has a point. I will take it into consideration. I just put it out there. It's up to you all to do with my words what you will do, if anything. My heart won't break either way. The feedback is always appreciated. In case I really DO want to win hearts and minds, it can't possibly hurt to better understand how people take things in.
No harm done And yes, they specifically told me....You should grow your hair out a little....which is why the irritation occured. I haven't taken it to heart, because my hair is still short and will be for a while

Medusa99: I can commiserate although I am coming from the other end of the spectrum.

Except for about 2 yrs. total of my nearly 34, I have had long hair. I mean truly long hair. One of my little pet peeves are models, actresses or women's magizines that think "long" hair is somewhere below the neck and above the shoulder blades. My hair brushes the top of my butt cheeks.

Up until the 1920's with the flapper movement and sufferage, the majority of women had long hair. It was a show of independance and defiance for women to cut off their hair into bob's and other styles. Beyond that time period, I just don't understand why women and girls still embrace the shorter hair style overwhelmingly. The next major women's movement was "women's lib" of the '70's and long hair was unquestionably back during that time.

I personally feel that very few women look good in and can get away with very short hair. The majority wear their hair in short-medium to medium lengths. Like those of you who chose to wear your hair short, I receive quite alot of flack for my long hair. It is healthy, cut nicely (no redneck short hair on the crown and only the back long! It's all one length but no Crystal Gayle goin' on), kept clean and I get compliments left and right from total strangers about how beautiful it is. In South Africa, the bar girls at our hotel couldn't stop caressing and touching it, much to my embarressment.

I just feel women look sexiest and most feminine with longish hair. In theory, many others do to. Think of all the novels (no not harliquins people!)/movies/videos where the woman seems like a prude or is stern, until the pins come out and her long hair cascades down her back. As one who lives with it daily it seems to me that most women have chosen the easist route, which is short/er hair because it is a pain-in-the-ass to take care of long hair. Watch any talk-show episode about make-overs and the stylists can't wait to take their sissors to a woman (or man) with really long hair. My own wedding pictures make me sad/mad because the stylist 2 days before, instead of giving me a trim of 1", hacked off 6" of my hair. When curled for my wedding, I looked like a total stranger with my hair just brushing my shoulders.

My Mother-in-law has made seemingly benign comments for 16 yrs. about my hair and very shocking to me, my Father-in-law (who is a much different creature) recently joined in with the razzing. Like the original poster, I just don't understand people's attitude about long hair.

I'm just expressing my personal opinions and although I prefer long hair on women, I don't detest short hair (it can look great on the right woman), I was just trying to show someone's thoughts from the opposite side. I'm pretty sure not many women with short hair would think that those of us with long hair get attitude too.

Sounds like theyre just trying to be nice. Though maybe not.

Like most, I usually like long hair, but some girls have short hair that really fits and looks sexy. So don't worry about it.

I'm another guy who once had long hair. I liked it, though now I feel I look better with short, plus the extra maintence really sucked, so I feel ya there.

But ya, women have every right to have short hair and not be rideculed about it.

Don't feel bad. We with long hair get slighted, too. We get the same bullshit, only in reverse.

"Why don't you cut all that hair?"

"You look like Cousin It."

"How do manage all that hair?"

"Why don't you cut your hair and donate it?"

"You'd look better if you cut x-amount of inches off."

Everyone has some sort of preference for anything and everything. Some are just more vocal about it. Wear your hair how YOU like to wear it, and screw everyone else.

Just remember how the snarkiness feels when it's done to you, and compliment the next short-haired gal you see, and try not to look with contempt at the next long-haired gal you see.

I've had very short hair in the past (shaved neck and everything). It is now past my waist. I love both long and short hair. Right now, it's long. Eventually, it may be short again.

Enjoy your hair no matter what anyone else says.

Well, I've already mentioned how I feel about gals with long hair... With regards to short haired woman, I've found this look to be cute and/or pretty. It's not a turn on, but they do look great.

The exception is if she has curly hair, that's always a turn on. Lately, some gals have "let me down" by straightening their hair. WHY!?!? Allow me to refer you to the short lived series "Dark Angel" w/ Jessica Alba. It's first season it was a huge hit, and Alba has curly hair. The second season, Alba straightens her hair and the show's ratings plumet which cancels the show. And why is straight hair "in"?

As for my own hair, I've worn it shoulder length for a year during the late '90s. And let me tell ya, it's tough for a guy to find work with long hair. I work in a pizzeria for a time, and I was the only guy who had to wear a hat at all times. As a security guard, same story. Always wear the company hat. Funny bit: the supervisor asked some of the women to wear their hair in a bun instead of a pony tail. Their reply, "But he can wear a pony tail."

Ahhh - Curly hair... my own personal rant...

I've had curly hair most of my life (it was bone straight as a kid, and somewhere in high school, it got really thick and wavey - towards college it turned curly) and it's a challenge... while I have often wished for straight hair, nature gave me curls, so ya play the hand you are dealt.

What kills me, is whenever I go to a new hairdresser, they always want to straighten my hair... they don't quite get if you cut it right... then it doesn't need to be straightened, let it dry naturally nature will take it's course.

All the makeover shows that are on the telly - -it's rare that they leave a curly haired person with their curls, they most always straighten it... like curly hair isn't pretty or sexy or anything - -only straight hair can be pretty.

Yep...crazy. But also, all the make-over shows tend to chop off long hair and go for short, and I think that's screwed up, too.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned how sexy an exposed neck can be. Something only short hair can provide! Long hair always hides it unless put up in a pony-tail.

Not so. I wear my hair up in a hair stick almost all the time, and my husband is terribly tempted by my neck. LOL

Ali and Squirt...I actually love the way that a healthy head of long hair looks....it just never works that way on MY head. It becomes incredibly unmanageable (coarse and wavy) when it gets past my chin. I never really thought about the opposite end though; thanks for the input!

mal, I love curls. Always have. I think they are gorgeous.

Everyone else, thanks for your comments. Y'all are the best

Medusa99: Thanks! Unfortunately, I know what you mean. About 4 yrs. ago I was taking a anti-depressant (Depakote) for only a few months when it started causing my hair to fall out (a side-effect that is not listed on the info. packet that comes with the drug).

It may seem superficial that I was so upset by losing hair, but as I said before, I've had long hair my entire life and it is a part of me. It was also very thick, and I had lost more than 50% of the thickness, therefore bulk. Once I stopped that drug, my hair started to grow back. When it grew back, it was different hair. Suddenly after 30+ yrs. of it being coarse, thick, and straight, the new growth was curly.

I don't feel older than my early or mid 20's but my body begs to differ. I now (post-drug) wake up with "rat's nest's" in the back of my head. This is something my "baby" sister went through when she was five. My previously straight and sleek hair now needs "styling" products to keep it free from snarls and snags (which barely do the job). It is now a pain in the ass for me to maintain the hair I've had all my life. I still put up with it though because "long" hair is my identity (yes, there are days that I wish I had short hair!).

Here is my problem/rant. I know that a lot of men find longer hair sexy or more attractive, but WHY must they comment on it? I've received comments from three co-workers lately about my hair; all implied that I should grow it out longer. They weren't come-ons or anything like that, just casual comments about growing it out. I just don't understand why someone would tell someone they don't know that well that they should change their appearance. I guess I'm just peeved.
Some people look better with long hair, some people look better with short hair. To tell if you would/do look better with one or the other, I would have to see what you look like. Other than that, all I can say is to wear it the way you like it and ignore other's opinons, if that is what makes you comfotable.
