MTV, want to change it?

I don't know if anyone else knows about the new Reggaeton (fusion of Reggae, Hip-Hop, Salsa) sweeping across urban areas around the US right now.. Seems as MTV has realized the impact of this new genre and has included a song by the name of "Reggaeton Latino" on their website.

The video is actually great. It contains footage of many famous Latino from everywhere from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Brazil, Cuba, etc... If the video is viewed enough times on MTV.com, they will air it on their regular channel (not the Latin MTV). If this happens, it will be the first all Spanish video to ever air on MTV.

Honestly, I would like to see this happen. A major media comglomerate like MTV actually being told what to do by society instead of the other way around. And the video is actually good, not a boy band or stupid booty shakin rap video. Here is the link to the video. I encourage everyone to check it out..

the video is good, but...
i'm not particularly fond of mtv. it seems to me that their focus is on damn near everything else except music.
but still, the video is good.

MTV has done lots of things in the past because of the public. Wanna Be A VJ, TRL positions etc all have been impacted by direct voting and changed the way even the producers wanted the show to go.

wait.. MTV actually played a video?! I thought they gave up on actually showing music a long time ago./end thread jack

anyway, it's always good to see new media hitting the airwaves. Especially when it brings two cultures closer together. The fact that it will be the first all spanish video played on mtv is a good thing and also opens the door for other artists.

Why would we support MTV in any fashion? Why don't they just rename it SRTV for Shitty Reality TV and get it over with. . . if I have to be exposed to one more Road Rules/Real World, etc marathon I think I'll choke, but for the sake of good bands getting deserved exposure I'll watch the video.

I'm entirely serious here - WHEN would they play the video? I remember when my parents got TiVO over my winter break, I looked through the schedule for MTV and found periods spanning over 24 hours during which no music-related shows were to be aired.

There's just the mornings and the afternoons where they play videos. Afternoons they only play them as part of TRL and then not even in their entirety.

I thought the video was fairly good, but I dont agree that it should be played on MTV. I dont understand Spanish, and although I would like to be able to, I have absolutely no idea what Don Omar was singing/rapping about. Call me ignorant, but Im not sure that showing a video with Castro and Che Gueverra would be the best idea for a largely non-Spanish speaking MTV audience. This video might actually be better for MTV2 though, as they tend to show more music videos and even less popular (and a lot of times much better) music.

This is something that bugs me even more than the fact they rarely play videos in the first place. If you're going to play a video, play the whole thing damnit. I guess most people who watch MTV don't have the attention span for an entire 4 minute video though

MTV is in the business of doing what appeals to society. I wouldnt want to know what would air on MTV if they played what society didnt want. Those "booty shakin rap" videos are what most MTV watchers want to see, thats why they play them.

Reggaeton is pretty good stuff although it could use a little diversity to some of the beats.

There is one that is done over a Celia Reyes song and that is great...can't remember who does it though.

I was going to ask wait...what's MTV? haha...MTV is still relevant, however, or it would be off the air. Interesting how they are listening to the audience and reacting to what they want.

I actually stopped watching MTV back in the 80's. Actually around 1989. They where moving away from actually showing music videos to what they are today.

I'm with you on this . . . subterranean can be interesting . . . Saul Williams is a genius anywhere he plays . . . even MTV

The video was pretty good, the images were artful, catchy song.

I would like to bring to everybody's attention that music viedos are NOT designed for entertainment. They are almost strictly a promotional device. Want proof??? Just watch a couple of music videos of songs of similar style (the best way is to look at a couple "rap" videos and a couple of "emo" videos). You will begin to notice that there are things in the videos that make them appealing to certain demographics.

Look also at the way that MTV has implanted themselves in different media (eg., play Trivial Pursuit 90's Edition, or watch Rock N' Roll Jeopardy, or read Teen magazine) and established themselves as the "definers of teen pop culture."

MTV, as well as radio and the recording industry as a whole, aren't at all interested in music. They are interested in giving the masses what they want for maximum profits, not creativity.

So, if I did actually want to see pop music videos where would I go to see them? How do the kids making requests on TRL know which videos to request, I mean where do they see the videos so that they'll know which ones they like?

I'll take a guess: it's all made up or scripted. I don't really believe anyone gets their "request" honored unless it's on a programer's list.

Reality TV is scripted, radio stations run the same way - a programmer/producer decides.

I dunno, it's just my guess.

i don't have a problem with MTV not showing music.. what i have a problem with is them keeping the name MTV.. doesn't the M stand for music?

i used to watch mtv (when it was a music video channel) to find out what was new in the music industry, listen to some artists that might not recieve a lot of radio play in my area, and possibly see a new song in a genre that maybe i'd been overlooking.

anyhow.. more on topic.. i really don't see them finding time to air said video.. except maybe as a break between real world/road rules episodes. however it would be nice to see them get more music related material on there
