One hell of a story...

Man peed way out of avalanche

A Slovak man trapped in his car under an avalanche freed himself by drinking 60 bottles of beer and urinating on the snow to melt it.

Rescue teams found Richard Kral drunk and staggering along a mountain path four days after his Audi car was buried in the Slovak Tatra mountains.

He told them that after the avalanche, he had opened his car window and tried to dig his way out.

But as he dug with his hands, he realised the snow would fill his car before he managed to break through.

He had 60 half-litre bottles of beer in his car as he was going on holiday, and after cracking one open to think about the problem he realised he could urinate on the snow to melt it, local media reported.

He said: "I was scooping the snow from above me and packing it down below the window, and then I peed on it to melt it. It was hard and now my kidneys and liver hurt. But I'm glad the beer I took on holiday turned out to be useful and I managed to get out of there."

Parts of Europe have this week been hit by the heaviest snowfalls since 1941, with some places registering more than ten feet of snow in 24 hours.
this fucker is one lucky man. he had almost 8 gallons of beer in his car, and drank ALL OF IT in order to free himself from an avalanche. i could just see him stuck saying:
"Dammit, how the fuck am i going to get out of here....maybe a beer will fuel the brain cells."

10 minutes later:
"Dammit, now i've got to take a piss.......uhhhh......but where?" just then a lightbulb goes off.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Brilliant! hoo sed drink berr makey yuo dumm?

Can you imagine how cocked he must've been when they finally got to him? I mean if he died in there I guess he'd be beyond caring.

TexanAvenger 02-25-2005 02:04 PM

Actually, I would've thougt it went something like this:

"Dammit. I'm not going to be able to get out of here. Why go down sober?"

10 minutes and 10 beers later:

"I know! If I... pee on the... snow, It'll all go away!"

And was just crazy enough to work...

So beer is now standard emergency equipment to have in your car? Sounds good to me.

Sounds like the makings for a master card "priceless" commercial.

Claim: A man freed himself from an avalanche by drinking beer and urinating on the snow to melt it.

Status: Undetermined.

Example: [news.com.au, 2005]

Quote:

A Slovak man trapped in his car under an avalanche freed himself by drinking 60 bottles of beer and urinating on the snow to melt it.

Rescue teams found Richard Kral drunk and staggering along a mountain path four days after his Audi was buried in Slovakia's Tatra mountains. He told them that after the avalanche, he had opened his car window and tried to dig his way out with his hands.

But he realised the snow was falling faster than he could dig. and would soon fill his car.

He had 60 500ml bottles of beer in his car as he was going on holiday, and after cracking one open to think about the problem he realised he could urinate on the snow to melt it.

"It was hard and now my kidneys and liver hurt," he said later. "But I'm glad the beer I took on holiday turned out to be useful."
Origins: The story about a Slovak man who was buried inside his car by an avalanche, and supposedly freed himself by drinking beer and urinating on the snow to melt it, was carried by a number of western news services in January 2005. The story has so far proved difficult to verify because its attributions have been vague (e.g., "correspondents in Bratislava"), and it evidently originated in a part of the world (the Slovak Republic) where information sources are more difficult to track down (particularly because the language is unfamiliar to most westerners).

However, a correspondent who works for a Slovak news agency informed us that not only has the avalanche story (or any news story about an avalanche) not appeared in the news media there, but the very same tale (of Czech origin, told about an unnamed man caught in the Austrian Alps) was circulating in that country as an e-mail joke even before the heavy snows described in the article occurred.

That's pretty awesome hehe..
Guess beer is good for more than just drinking for fun.

Manuel Hong 02-25-2005 02:44 PM

Oh! Snopes always ruins it!! Talk about pissing on your cereal.

asudevil83 02-25-2005 02:46 PM

no shit...damn snopes ruins the best story ever.

stevie667 02-25-2005 02:50 PM

Right, since snops ruined that, who fancies going off with a few crates and crashing themself into a snowdrift?

Manuel Hong 02-25-2005 02:53 PM

I'm in! You go first.

*Nikki* 02-25-2005 03:44 PM

That man is a genius.

This man:)

Carno 02-25-2005 06:20 PM

Ahh... okay. Heh :)

whocarz 02-25-2005 06:45 PM

Look again. The story isn't false. It's undetermined. If it does happen to be true, then that's pretty damn ingenious.

DDDDave 02-25-2005 07:02 PM

Why not just pour the beer out on the snow to melt it????

I know, I know, pouring beer out without drinking it is against most peoples religion but I'm just saying......

Damn you Dave! You beat me to it...but seeing as how I'm a bit tipsy from taking one too many shots of rum I'll let it slip by this once. But next time you might not be so lucky!

Hey, do you guys ever feel like pirates when drinking rum? I found some pirate-esque songs online and always sing them when I've got some rum in me. YAR!!!! Hold on, I'm in an avalanche...I might have to use this rum to pee my way out of it.

Good christ I hope this makes sense in the morning.

viejo gringo 02-25-2005 07:27 PM

JUST REMEMBER "don't eat the yellow snow"---:D

Sure, you could do that and waste the stuff, but urine is warmer than the beer (hopefully) and you'd get more use out of it that way.

Here's my issue with the story: it's not that I don't think he could've thought of this, or started it, but I have friends that, when they get drunk, couldn't hold a straight line while pissing for the life of 'em. So how could this guy, after all this beer, consistantly hit the same area?

I'm thinking the interior of his car needed cleaning afterward...

drakers 02-25-2005 10:08 PM

Wow, beer saved the day for once. Too bad he couldn't play any good drinking games with anyone. That must of been one hell of a party that he was going to, but I bet the guests were pissed they got no beer. HAHA

Hard8s 02-26-2005 09:52 PM

Ok here is my issue with this story. What about his air supply? After a couple of hours the heat from his breath will have iced over the area he is in. Snow is not conducive to allowing air through it, even powder. So he would have suffocated long before he drank and pissed enough beer to get himself out. 99% of people who die in avalances die from asphyixation not the cold!

Dostoevsky 03-02-2005 10:55 AM

I'm glad that snopes called bullshit because I was about to call it myself. How the hell can you expect to melt yourself out of an avalanche with 8 gallons of liquid? Great story, but it doesn't make any sense whatsoever if you think about it logistically.
