Might be going to Oscar Night America. Get to see it on the IMAX. Have sum questions.

Hello all. I might be going to Oscar Night America. My mom has two tickets but I gotta talk my dad out of going since my mom and I are the two big movie ppl. My dad doesn't care about movies all that much.

My questions are this. It says that most are "black-tie affairs". What does that mean? What exactly do they want me to wear? Has anyone ever been to this before? I have a blazer, would that work? Has anyone ever been to one of these before? What would this be like? HERE'S another link.

If it's a black blazer you might be able to make it work. But you'd better have matching pants. That way, you can wear a simple white shirt and black tie (either bow or otherwise) and be okay. But if it's your ordinary sports jacket type blazer, I'd say it wouldn't work.

You don't want to show up wearing the wrong clothes and not be allowed in.

One tip? Don't give Paris Hilton your phone number

A "black tie affair" usually means a tuxedo.

A suit will work in most cases, but you will be underdressed.

Awww crap...a penguin eh? Well guess what? I don't have a tux. So how much would one cost to rent? If it's expensive as hell then I'll have to shoot myself.

You can usually rent one for 50-100$ depending on the rental place and the make/quality of the tux.

Call around.

Definately rent unless you plan on wearing a tux on a regular basis...

This was a few years ago, but when my boyfriend needed to rent a tux, the whole thing was under $50. That also included shoes, vest, dress shirt, and tie.

Most of the parties are black-tie affairs, though some are less formal, with varied and distinctive touche
I had gone to one years ago that was a "theme" event. Black and white attire was required otherwise you weren't getting in. If it's a black tie event, then a tux is really the norm for the evening, but if it's a themed event, then dress could be pretty much anything.

It's early for prom season and wedding season, so you might get a good deal on tux rentals now... Check a variety of places for the best prices. (I think Men's Wearhouse advertises tuxedo rentals now too). Rent the shoes while you are at it (dress shoes are much thinner soled and much dressier than any other shoe you probably have in your closet) (And don't forget black socks

Make sure to read Roger Ebert's Unwritten Rules of the Oscars so you'll know who will win.

brown shoes and beige slacks will not fly for a black tie event. Just rent the tux. You can rent a nice one for around $50.00. Or, if you're going to be wearing it on more than one occasion...you can pick up one with shirt, vest, cumberbund, cuff links and the works for $200.00 to $300.00. Mine was about $225.00, about 5 years ago.
