was just in a car accident

She ran through the red and I clipped her back bumper. Tore her bumper off, and put a deep gash in mine, along with a broken headlight and some body damage. Didnt have any time to even swerve. She was very upset and kept apologizing, I told her it was OK, no one got hurt, and thats the important thing. If she had waited another second before going through the light, I would have smashed right into her drivers door going 50km an hour....scary thought.

rogue49 05-25-2003 05:53 AM

Well, I'm glad you are alright.
Now let's hope her insurance goes through fine.

Frowning Budah 05-25-2003 05:58 AM

I have been lucky. Never been in a serious accident. Glad you were ok. This reminds us all to be extra careful

GoldenOuroboros 05-25-2003 06:12 AM

Car accidents suck.. I don't remember the one I was in.. But still have the scars to prove it... I was too young that day..

Plummie 05-25-2003 07:00 AM

My mother always told me, "Drive defensively, always keep your eyes open for the other driver."

There are some real idiots on the road. I'm glad no one was injured...

Glory's Sun 05-25-2003 07:03 AM

At least no one was injured..hopefully the rest of it will work out for the best

Derwood 05-25-2003 07:10 AM

The good thing is that if she apologized to you, she accepted fault, which means she can't come back and try to sue you for hitting her. A lesson to everyone out there: IF you are ever in an accident, and if you were clearly at fault, DON'T APOLOGIZE TO THE OTHER DRIVER....because if THEY apologize, you now have legal precedent.

She can say anything she wants - you better make sure there was a witness or that you got it in writing! She'll say something different when she figures out what it cost.

BulletBob 05-25-2003 09:33 AM

I don't think it's hard to see who was at fault, regardless of who said what. She ran a red light plain and simple. Anyways, I had a friend who was in a similar wreck. A woman pulled out in front of him and he T-boned her running about 60 mph. Nobody was seriously hurt but his car was totaled. And to make matters worse, the woman didn't have insurance.

WhoaitsZ 05-25-2003 10:33 AM

glad you're okay.

people's blatant ignorance while driving petrifies me. I have little to no upper body strength. i will fall forward at a red light easily. if i have an actual wreck, i'm screwed.

so.......... glad yer okay. and you people who like to drive wildly.. so do i... but do it off the roads.

duckduck 05-25-2003 02:02 PM

Yeah, car accidents suck. Glad to see you're both ok, though.

I've begun to find out (at least, when the accidents minor and one's own fault) that it's a lot cheaper to just repair the vehicle yourself. I rolled my truck into a swamp (swimming out of it when it was upside in putrid water was a different experience) after I overbraked, hit gravel with 2 of my wheels, and lost control in a turn very late at night. The insurance was going to be atrocious. We worked it out that I would fix it (a lesson to not do it again that I learned quite well) and that my insurance wouldn't go up. Overall, one summer's worth of paychecks and a lesson learned were the only outcomes.

I landed in schtick and came out smelling like roses one could say ;)

Miekle 05-25-2003 02:39 PM

That makes me shudder just thinking about what if's glad no one got hurt.

Shokan 05-25-2003 04:22 PM

Since there was no witness, and she was clearly at fault, what happens? If she tries to say that it was somehow my fault, am I screwed? Who is the insurance going to believe if she says it was my fault? Whats the deal?

krwlz 05-25-2003 05:03 PM

I take it from referance to Km, that you weren;t in NY where we have wonderful no fault insurance...More like everyboby's fault insurance they way rates soar from any accident....

Shokan 05-25-2003 05:54 PM

so your saying both our insurances will go up equally? I believe we have no fault insurance here as well....my sister said something about it over dinner tonight...

Mango 05-25-2003 06:27 PM

Glad you weren't hurt.
I was in a 90Kph hit and run once. I have always been taught to drive defensively but I the case of the hit and run I was in a strong offense served me well.

snowace56 05-25-2003 11:17 PM

Theres nothing like be side swipped/rear ended at 70 miles an hour and then the police telling you if your friend had been another foot over youd all be dead. Thats scary shit. And be prepared your insurance WILL go up. His did.

Conclamo Ludus 05-25-2003 11:27 PM

I was in the same type of accident in New York State and I was found at fault. It was a disgrace, this old man got off while I got screwed with a ticket. It was pretty much an ugly age discrimination. Not worth fighting though.

Phaenx 05-26-2003 12:11 AM

Only ever been in one accident here. Head went through the dashboard, don't remember much of what happened either =D.

Amen to that. I drive very defensively and try to expect actions such as that. Assuming that people will drive 'normal' or follow the rules of the road is folly.

The other driver apologizing really has very little influence on whether they can, and will, sue. Once they talk to an attorney or their friends/family, their story can change. Identify as many witnesses as you can than verify and support your version of the circumstances.....just in case.

An apology is not a "legal precedent". A precedent is legal principle, created by a court decision, which provides an example or authority for judges deciding similar issues later. It has no relationship to the driver's apology.
