Police: Pregnant woman kills attacker

Friday, February 11, 2005 Posted: 1:48 PM EST (1848 GMT)

FORT MITCHELL, Kentucky (AP) -- A nine-months pregnant woman fought off and killed a knife-wielding woman who may have been trying to steal the baby, police said Friday.

Police said 26-year-old Sarah Brady acted in self-defense in killing Katherine Smith on Thursday. No charges were filed.

Smith, 22, had been falsely telling neighbors for weeks that she was pregnant, and a search of her apartment after her death revealed a full baby nursery, investigators said.

"She had everything in place that you'd expect to have in place with a newborn coming," said Steve Hensley, police chief in this Cincinnati suburb.

Brady, 26, was treated for cuts at a hospital.

Police said that about a week ago, Smith called Brady, a stranger, and asked her to come over and pick up a mistakenly delivered package.

Brady picked up the package, the two spoke briefly and she left, according to police.

Thursday's attack occurred after Brady went to pick up a second package at Smith's apartment, police said.

In December, a Missouri woman was strangled and her baby was cut from her womb. The baby was later found alive, and a Kansas woman was charged with kidnapping resulting in death.

Authorities say baby never tossed from car
Sheriff: Woman who reported incident is boy's mother

Friday, February 11, 2005 Posted: 3:50 PM EST (2050 GMT)

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (CNN) -- A woman who reported seeing a newborn tossed out of a moving car made up the story and is the boy's mother, Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne said Friday.

The woman didn't want her family to know about the child, Jenne said.

Patricia Pokriots, 38, "made up an incredible story," Jenne said.

She was questioned Friday and acknowledged what she had done, he said.

Jenne said the infant is healthy and doing well. He has no bruises or scratches.

Under Florida law, a parent or relative can turn a newborn over to authorities with no questions asked during the first three days of his or her life.

"The only charge I can think of charging against [Pokriots] would be making a false police report," the sheriff said.

Pokriots learned she was pregnant a couple of months ago, he said. He described her as a large woman, noting that the pregnancy may not have shown as early as it may have on someone else.

Pokriots was taken to a hospital Friday and committed for observation "at our urging," he said.

Authorities will seek court permission to take the infant as well as another son, who is 10, into state custody, he said. In her statement, she has made clear she wants to give up the infant, Jenne said.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office said the woman told authorities she was driving Thursday afternoon in a residential area of northern Fort Lauderdale when she saw a man and woman arguing in a car.

A bundle flew out the window as the car slowed and landed on grass by the road, the woman told authorities, and she found a baby boy with a plastic bag over his head.

The baby was flown via helicopter to Broward Medical Center. The 8-pound, 2-ounce boy was only hours old and still had his umbilical cord attached, authorities said.

But Jenne said there are no signs of medical problems. The infant is "absolutely perfect," he said.

Nurses nicknamed the boy "Johny" after his attending physician, Johny Tryzmel.

When Pokriots first turned the child in, she seemed nervous, Jenne said, but her behavior didn't seem unusual for someone who witnessed what she said she did.

As authorities questioned her later on, they began to sense that her story was shaky, he said.

Under questioning Friday, Pokriots acknowledged fabricating the story, Jenne said.

She said she "gave birth in the bathroom of her mother's house at 1:30 on Thursday," he said. She said that she decided to drive to a fire station to leave the baby -- which is legal under the Florida law.

On the way, she saw two people in a white car arguing, and "she decided to build a story around it," Jenne said.

Other witnesses saw the same couple in the same white car arguing, he said.

"She pulled up to our district office and brought the baby inside," he said.

Pokriots works as a waitress at a bar and has a previous charge of aggravated battery, he said.

Authorities said many people have called saying they want to adopt the infant, but they said he is not up for adoption now.
you have two ends of the spectrum making national news on the same day. I honestly dont understand desperation like this

Disgusting is the only word I can think of to describe both of these stories. The positive is that neither victim was hurt. Not much more to say on this, just that I am in total disgust.
I'm sure we will see a TV movie about one of these cases in the near future, nothing says script approval like a sick and twisted look into society.

My SO and I have talked about things like this too many times. It's assinine that to drive a car you have to take a test, to get married you have to fill out all sorts of forms, jesus, you need more documentation to order a god damned pizza then you do to have a child. Gnarly stuff.

The first one is right in my backyard which is just creepy but then again there are freaks everywhere on this planet so I don't know why I'm shocked.

Sad stories...both of them. At least in the first story the (hopefully) normal one survived.

Let this be a lesson to you, do not mess with pregnant women! My wife broke up a dog-fight a few hours before she went into labor -- picked up a medium-sized boxer and threw the bitch aside. And here we have a pregnant woman who takes on a knife-wielding crazy lady and KILLS her ass dead.

You go, girls!

Those two stories are pretty nuts indeed.

But that's a good thing about the Florida law that allows a mother to give up a child no questions asked.

Nothing phases me anymore. Nothing left that is shocking. I feel sad but carry
a big gun just in case!
To find out that homicide to obtain a baby from a pregnant women and pass off
as your own is very common took all my shock away.

goes back inside and locks all my doors and windows.

If I read the 2nd story right, it's not THAT sick.

A woman gave birth to an unwanted child, goes to give it to authorities (which is legal), but instead of saying "it's my child, I don't want it", she made up a stupid lie about seeing the child being tossed out of a car and her picking it up.
So just a rather stupid made-up story that probably brought loads of unnecesary work for the police... but no child was actually tossed out of a car... right?

Except that the second story came from Florida showing that even a law such as a Safe Haven law has flaws.

The problem with unwanted children is pretty much the same as it is with abortion. If people (not just women because last time I checked a man had to be involved) understood what happens when you bump uglies, there would be fewer problems in these areas. Our society places no importance on being responsible.
