godaddy.com super bowl commercial

I'm sure a lot of people have heard about the godaddy.com super bowl commercial thing. If you haven't, I'll summarize:

They are a domain name registration service that paid for two ads at the super bowl. Supposedly, the ads were too racy for fox (lol) and they only played one. Since then, I've seen so many things about godaddy that I'm starting to wonder about the whole thing.

How is it possible that fox only realized that the ads were too racy AFTER they had already run it? The whole thing about them being dropped gave them so much more publicity than they would have got if it had just ran. Is it possible that godaddy just paid fox for two ads plus extra so that they would drop the second ad and hope for the extra coverage?

Am I just to cynical?

It really wouldn't surprise me if that was the situation. I think that they were on the "any publicity is good publicity" tip with this commercial deal. I like the to racy for fox comment though

I was under the impression that after fox ran it once the NFL said not to play it again.

The second ad was supposed to play at the 2 minute warning, so their commercial would have been fresh in people's minds after the game. And since it was such a close game people would have been watching. This info came from the godaddy.com guy (he called in to howard stern this morning).

Fox also edited out the phrase "wardrobe malfuction" fromt he commercial. Apparently it was going to be in a "censored" block over the chest of the woman, but either Fox or the NFL or both said it would cause trouble so they edited it out.

If i were the guy i would be super pissed. The spot costs like $2.5MILLION and was in a super-good time during the game. This whole deal about censorship on the airwaves has gotten way out of control.

Have you seen Hot Points – A blog by Go Daddy founder and president Bob Parsons? He sounds pretty pissed about the whole thing, but at the same time, amused.

Of course, the best part is getting to see the extended version, which is just as funny, but 2 minutes long. I thought the ad was very effective.

I'm reading that blog further, and he seems like a really cool guy. This quote was from his post on the Sunday before the game...

With the 2.5M ad it would have ran and been possibly talked about in casual conversation by people. Since it got cut, they've gotten news coverage about it. News sites link to the video, talk radio discusses it, we talk about it on message boards, etc. The removal of the ad generated a lot more buzz that they would have had. There is no way they would have generated this much publicity if the second ad had run.

I think that the cut version of the ad is more effective than the full version. The full version is way to long and lost my interest. The other ones pace, I think, adds to its humor instead of drawing out the joke.

There are few ways advertisers and networks can play the value of these ads after the fact than to feed the "vibes" of the ads out to the news media. These ads are being replayed quite a lot, especially over media such as IFILMS.com, and the talk and media play flys under the radar of the FCC, the chicken-shit hypocritical vanguard of our TV conscience.

This ad was previewed on the Today show the Friday before the Super Bowl... If the NFL, or the Fox Execs were so worried about the outlash of this ad, why play it the first time?

here's the thing about this year's superbowl. i am somewhat of a football fan, and usually don't watch a game unless the seahawks are playing for i live in seattle. whoever, i do watch the superbowl b/c of all the exciting things outside of the game that is going on.

this year seemed watered down. it was nice to hear paul mccartney sing all the songs of the old. it was nice to see all the cute commercials. whoever, the godaddy commercial is the only one i remember not b/c of the boobies, but b/c it was the only commercial that had enough guts to do something like that.

i'm glad it got passed the sensors. again, not for the boobies.

On a somewhat related note, godaddy.com is an excellent website hosting service. My mom and my uncle's websites are both hosted and registered with GoDaddy. They offer extremely cheap prices, almost 100% uptime, and some nice statistical options with each site you get.

I did see the commercial...I'm not really sure why everyone went apeshit. It wasn't that bad. Of course, it might be like the original poster said, a call for marketing!

I seen the commercial and thanks to Redlemon I've seen the extended one as well.

The only thing offensive about this commercial is that it isn't funny in the least.

However, thanks to the censoring due to Fox/the NFL freaking out, it's going to be insanely popular, which I suspect was the motive all along.

after just having seen both the short and extended version, I can't agree more. Not funny at all, and it'll probably get alot more attention than it deserves. Bleh, I hate tricks like these. You get the feeling you're being played like sheep, and even if you realise it, about 8 out of 10 real people around you won't.

The execs at fox are dumbasses. When they pulled the ad they created even even more free publicity for godaddy.com. Everybody is still talking about it almost a week after the game. Talk about getting your money's worth!

I am really growing tired of censorship. Everyone wants to be protected from the world. k1ng and I were disgussing this yesterday(unrelated story about his school). I am getting to the point were I am going to need to go on a rampage.

I think our problem is that only pissed off wackos write letters complaining. You never hear of studios getting letters from some guy who thought the commercial was well done. This is because no one is going to take the time to write a letter unless they are upset. The solution to this is everytime you see something that may be considered racey you have to write a letter expressing your gratitude.

Better solution: IF YOU DO NOT LIKE IT, DO NOT WATCH IT!
