That is pretty freakin incredible! I can't get over the speed that the maps are produced. I found everything I searched for almost immediately.

dirtyrascal7 02-09-2005 08:04 PM

wow... very nice. *bookmarks*

i'm still waiting for them to release an image search where, instead of typing in text, you can upload an image and search for images that are similar.

kurtisj 02-09-2005 08:27 PM

that is amazing, i cant believe google started out as a school project, bet those guys are glad they took the class that they did...

soma 02-09-2005 09:18 PM

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. It's like mapquest (which I consider one of the most wonderful website ever) but without the ads. You can't get any better than that.

oblar 02-09-2005 10:39 PM

i found google maps earlier today and began testing it. I was able to find everything fairly quickly, although a bit of a lag time when dragging the map around at full zoom as i followed a road I knew fairly well to see if it missed any of the roads :) Very detailed and quick.

I definatley put that high on my list of websites that i will frequent.

fatbob 02-10-2005 02:29 AM

No, but it is a beta.

Also, this thread is a dupe...
Tilted Forum Project - Google Maps

sherpahigh 02-10-2005 07:11 AM

Seems to be some glitch in it North of the border. When searching for stuff in Calgary Canada it shows the results (ie. Blues clubs) but there's no map until you zoom out to over half way on the sliding scale on the left. Must not have all the maps entered yet.

Looks like a cool site though.

Averett 02-10-2005 07:16 AM

This is great potential, but they should realize that getting from the Albany NY area to Waterloo Ontario via Syracuse to Kingston to Waterloo is pretty retahded.

Locke7 02-10-2005 07:28 AM

Geez, I just stumbled upon this as well. The drag feature is pretty unbelievable. But the directions are a little weird. I tried a few normal routes that I drive. And although the directions get you there, it didn't really show the fastest or shortest route...

Lasereth 02-10-2005 09:08 AM

Wow, I just "drove" from my dad's house to my mom's house on the map with the mouse. That's amazing. I wonder what kind of algorithms and gee-whiz technology they used to get this working.

Awsome find went into a new bookmark folder for all the related Google stuff. Thanks.

bing bing 02-10-2005 06:28 PM

That's pretty damn insane. Can't wait for it to include Australia.

kurty[B] 02-10-2005 06:28 PM

I love this! Good job Google!

Jackebear 02-11-2005 12:15 AM

Wow, I just found my parents farm in "NoWhere", Ontario. Cool.

So far, it's pretty impressive.

spived2 02-11-2005 05:59 AM

Wow, the simple graphics and easy to use interface really adds to the google tradition. I really like it, thanks for bringing it my attention.

Now how can we google hack Google maps....

betula 02-11-2005 07:28 AM

From just looking around quickly, I love the symbology, showing which roads are the 'major' arterials in yellow. I'm a GIS buff though, so this kind of thing is awesome. I can't wait until aerial/satellite photography is integrated with it...

hotzot 02-11-2005 07:48 AM

pretty interesting. good post

analog 02-11-2005 08:41 AM

holy shit, that's awesome! i just found my apartment by typing in the name of the complex and the city. that's awesome! and the maps! damn!

Yakk 02-11-2005 11:04 AM

Driving around using click-and-drag is fun. We worked out what a friend meant when describing a shortcut around a busy exit in Toronto by looking at the onramp/offramps.

I can't wait until A9's "storefront pictures", satalite photos, and GIS like maps converge, and they can build a driving simulation of every real city. "You have a Porche 911. Get from home to work as fast as you can. Go!"

Reminder.

Posting links without significant discussion waters this forum down to a shadow of its former self. It is not desirable to do so here.

Stiltzkin 02-11-2005 06:59 PM

Wow. I'm repeatedly impressed by Google. My mom is moving to Kansas tomorrow and I've never been to Kansas, so this'll definitely come in handy!

mrlayance 02-11-2005 10:44 PM

I have already dropped MapQuest from my bookmarks, maps does everything that mapquest does and better. Even has some northern canadian towns I visit often!

asudevil83 02-12-2005 05:33 PM

this is great....more than great.....AMAZING. you can search for anything, i mean anything. try it.

strip clubs in _______
pet stores in _______
bars in _______

the only problem i've found so far is the lack of locations that you can find. for example....i tried apartments in tempe and only got apartments that were in a 2 block radius of eachother. but it'll probably get upgraded with more complete content.

troit 02-12-2005 07:32 PM

your right - it is pretty incredible how fast the maps are generated...

billege 02-15-2005 11:20 AM

Don't get overly carried away with the google worshiping quite yet pals o' mine. The addy's it spits out are sometimes pretty f-ing far from what you search for.
Examples from my experiance today:

I put in: 5458 WEST POINTE PLAZA DR COLUMBUS OH 43228

it spit out: 771 South 30th St
Heath, OH 43056

Somehow I think it's confused.

I'm sure many of you will feel compelled to post how well it works for you. That's nice.

Pretty much, it's been working really well for me too. I played around with adding and leaving out ZIPs and got vastly different results for searches. It will move an address completely out of a city, and return addys without even similar street names or numbers.

Just remember it is a beta, not a gift from god.

clavus 02-15-2005 11:46 AM

heh! The first thing I tried was STRIP CLUBS IN_______

Pretty wacky. I followed the link to the Hibbet Sports location that it indicated, and it showed the contents of a really ugly script, and I think all of the words in your query showed up in there.

It seems to not recognize it as an address, and does a search for that location instead. There's a 'submit problem' link...

RallyEX 02-15-2005 07:47 PM

Wow, I'm really depressed... there's less to do where I live than I even though... Thanks google maps, I think.

I typed in "Something to do in Marietta, Ohio"... I got nothin'.

Kinda nice to find out there were a few new restuarants to try though, it is amazing what the guys at google did with this.

punx1325 02-16-2005 04:20 PM

It's really cool, but there are still some glitches...

SitizenVZ 02-16-2005 08:10 PM

Man, google is one of the best things to happen to the internet.

Scorps 02-17-2005 09:49 AM

That is a sweet site to bad it doesn't have to clubs and stuff in my town/city...but I know where they all are.

sashime76 02-17-2005 10:03 AM

Definitely something different than MapQuest, thanks!

BradRocker 02-17-2005 07:55 PM

Holy crap, this map site is sick. Google is going to run the universe.

wolf 02-18-2005 06:36 AM

Love the maps. Google is trying to be the next microsoft by taking over everything, with one noticable exception, their stuff works.

Paradise Lost 02-18-2005 09:16 AM

I do very much enjoy the speed that this bastard works at.
The scroll feature they have is awesome too, don't have to reload every damn time
you touch the mouse to the screen like on Yahoo! Maps.

Although, in terms of overall detail, it's about the same at Y! Maps. I think the major
thing most people will like, as mentioned numerous times before, will be its speed.

Dwayne 02-18-2005 02:23 PM

AMAZING!! I can not believe how useful that was. It just saved me hours looking for a good restraunt on vacation.
