what is everyone giving up for lent

Since today is fat tuesday ash wednesday is tomorrow, what is everyone giving up for lent. I am gona try to do the 40 days 40 nights thing and give up sexual contact but I am not sure how fair that is so I am just not going to give up masterbation for lent which is a challenge in its self and giving up drinking pop for lent. It should be a neat experience

Camelbackcinema 02-08-2005 06:07 PM

la petite moi 02-08-2005 06:55 PM

I don't celebrate Lent. What's the point?

JumpinJesus 02-08-2005 06:56 PM

I'm giving up lentils.

02-08-2005 06:56 PM

hannukah harry 02-08-2005 07:15 PM

judaism... :)

sadistikdreams 02-08-2005 07:19 PM

Hah.

While I'm not religious, I'm still gonna celebrate lent. And yeah, I'm gonna do the whole "40 Days 40 Nights" thing. No intercourse, no intimacy, no masturbation. Wish me luck!

SecretMethod70 02-08-2005 07:20 PM

You know, I never used to give anything up for lent, probably since about 3rd or 4th grade, but I did again for the first time last year. I realized that there *IS* a purpose, but that it, unfortunately, is never really communicated, or communicated well.

Really, I think the idea of giving something up for lent has a very Buddhist flavor to it, in that it involves material self-denial. It is an exercise in moving beyond corporeal attachments so as to find the joy in freeing ourselves from such restrictive addictions. That is not to say, of course, that physical pleasures are bad, but only that they can be inhibitive if we allow them to be. They can blind us to the greater pleasures. And, thus, I decided to begin this extended exercise of giving something up for lent again last year.

Last year, I gave up caffeine and carbonated beverages (so as to cover the loopholes) quite successfully. I planned on doing so again this year, but I wasn't thinking and just bought a 12 pack of Coke (which I will not drink in entirety tonight). So, I'll be starting a few days after lent officially begins, but that's what I'll be doing.

jesus.....

SaltPork 02-08-2005 08:35 PM

I've given up being unnecessarily nice to people. If you do something stupid, you'll hear about it, filter-free. People will receive my unabashed opinions, it should make for some interesting social commentary.

I've just decided i'm giving up the internet for lent. I know I am addicted. Hopefully 40 days without internet on my computer will cut down my dependancy on it. I won't be giving up computer entirely, as I have assignments and whatnot to complete. I will keep a journal in word to document it :) myabe i'll post the journal in my journal...

edit: I just found out I have to review a website for class on march 1st. I'll see how much I can do tonight and if not done, I will have to take a break to get my assignment completed.

Edit2: I need to do some internet stuff basically every week. So it's now 1 hour per week. Yep. great lent.

StanT 02-08-2005 08:41 PM

Since I'm a non-practicing Catholic, I'm going to give up giving up stuff for Lent.

anleja 02-08-2005 08:49 PM

"do you want these gourmet jelly beans? I'm giving up sweets for Lent."

K-Wise 02-08-2005 09:03 PM

Well I was gonna give up soda but it seems we won't be giving up anything this year rather we will be DOING something for Lent.

Asta!!

kurtisj 02-08-2005 09:05 PM

i would think about givin something up, but i know i would fail. Also it makes no sense to me anyway

warrrreagl 02-09-2005 06:20 AM

I'm giving up tomato aspic, raw oysters, and sharp sticks poked in my eye.

Stompy 02-09-2005 01:19 PM

When I was 8 or 9, I was in some religious school for a year.

It made them angry when I gave up Lent for Lent. I thought it was pretty funny. Still do.

ziadel 02-10-2005 02:45 PM

I'm giving up tolerance for other peoples religious bliefs for lent...

:D

Lebell 02-10-2005 02:49 PM

I've given up my family for 2 months...I think that will be sufficient for this particular lent.

And I agree with SM...there is a good purpose behind it.

Tophat665 02-10-2005 02:57 PM

I've decided to give up religion for lent. I am going to try and live ethically and fully without reference to external spiritual beings. ;)

Sickly, I had the last can this morning. You can see why I'm giving it up ;)

meembo 02-10-2005 04:36 PM

my minister said last night something I agree with, that it's much more important to decide to do something important than it is to give up something.

Carno 02-10-2005 07:53 PM

Bah. I am of the opinion that Lent is just another uptight tradition carried over by a too uptight Catholic church. If you want to fast (fasting does not necessarily mean food), then fast. Don't fast because it's a certain day or month or whatever. To me, Lent is just another sign of people being Sunday Christians. People who do whatever the hell they want during the week, but then act like Saints on Sunday's when they go to church.

EDIT: No offense to anyone on here who practices Lent though.. My opinion is just based off of my own personal experiences. Not trying to attack anyone.

Fourtyrulz 02-10-2005 08:00 PM

Dammit Stompy peice of crap you stole my joke! Where's the goddamn : punch: emoticon when you need it...joke stealing bastard son of a bitch whore ass!!!

That said, I'm giving up swearing and punching people for Lent. :D (no hard feelings hehehe :icare: ) <----manlove

Sawfmonkey 02-10-2005 09:46 PM

I gave up men. Well...the whole intimacy thing, and hunting for someone for the night while out on the town. (I'm curious how long it will last. I've gone two days so far!) My roommate suggested it. I told her she should give up her vibrator...she's addicted. But noooooo...

Journeyman 02-11-2005 06:30 AM

I didn't have a drink from August untill 12AM February 9th, my 21st birthday. I've decided to give up longterm sobriety for lent.

Shady 02-11-2005 06:46 AM

I don't really know what to give up. I probably should have decided by now, since lent has already started. I'd rather do something extra than give something up, but I don't know what that would be either. I think maybe I'll try to give up beer for lent.

Also...to those of you giving up sexual pleasure for lent....I wish you luck. You should be fine for the first 2 weeks. After that it gets crazy :) I think I made it 22 days when I tried, but I may not be as strong willed as others.

animosity 02-11-2005 06:50 AM

I havent had any chocolate(any candy, cookies, sugar...) in over a month... I guess I will continue that, even though I am not religious :p

Bill O'Rights 02-11-2005 06:54 AM

I think, for this year, that I'm going to give up bitching about all of the fish that my wife serves for dinner at this time of year.
(Hey...I knew that she was a devout Catholic when I married her.)

StormBerlin 02-11-2005 07:00 PM

Am I the only one that's given up smoking?

Camelbackcinema 02-11-2005 07:14 PM

StormBerlin, we'll see in 37 days if I did also.

viejo gringo 02-11-2005 08:11 PM

I thought about giving up scotch, but I got to worrying about those poor souls over in Mexico at the liquior store that would get layed off, so I am giving up sex again...same as last year..

Arroe 02-11-2005 11:59 PM

I'm giving up Caffeine. That means no coffee/soda. I did have decaf coffee the other day though, and today i had a Sprite, but no caffeine so I'm all good.

absorbentishe 02-12-2005 12:35 AM

I gave up other women. That's my ususal thing t give up. Although, I gave them up when we got married...

Ratman 02-12-2005 07:56 AM

I live in a country where about .07% of the population identifies as ANY kind of Christian. Here, "lent" is the past tense of "to lend".

basmoq 02-12-2005 12:22 PM

nothing shall be given up...

PayUp 02-12-2005 12:23 PM
