You guys heard about the American soldier being held in hostage in Iraq?

Got up this morning and heard that an US trooper was being held hostage by the insurgency in Iraq and when I looked at the grainy pick I was like...that just looks fake.

Well....turns out it probably is a fake and that the "hostage" is a 12" action figure. And when you zoom in on the picture sure enough...there is a fake toy M-16 pointed at the hostages' head. I've seen just about everything now. And just to think this was reported all over the place today.

This combination shows an image, left, posted on an Iraqi militant Web site on Tuesday Feb. 1, 2005 and an image provided by toy manufacturer Dragon Models USA of an action figure named ' Cody' in a box. The Web site posted the photograph of what it claimed was a kidnapped U.S. soldier, but doubts were quickly raised about its authenticity and the U.S. military said no soldiers were missing. Dragon Models USA, said the figure in the photo resembled one of its military action figures originally produced for sale at U.S. bases in Kuwait. (AP Photo/Dragon Models USA, HO)
I think I'm going to go buy one of those dolls now because of this.

Any idea on who spread this story? Motives? I'm too lazy to research it myself.

This does seem to be a more bizarre aspect of our media saturation and a truly odd story.

I saw this last night and thought it was one of the wackiest things I'd ever seen. I guess they were getting a bit desparate since they haven't taken a real hostage in a while.

I guess we should send G.I. Joe to rescue him?

The news report I saw said it was posted on some islamic group's website.

I cannot verify the accuracy though...

Terrible, what next? Teddybears or maybe even puppies!

Snopes has posted this as "Unverified', because while the picture is clearly staged using the action figure, there's no evidence that it was actually used in a claim by an insurgent group. Doesn't mean it WASN'T, they just haven't been able to prove either way.

Good ol' Snopes, man. God bless 'em.

That would have been one really stupid hostage taker to leave the GI's gear on him.

It's all coming together now... Bin Laden is actually Cobra Commander. We've been going about this whole war wrong from the start.
