Why do you watch the Super Bowl if you don't like football?

Wasn't sure if this belonged in the Sports section but I felt that I wouldn't get the answers I was seeking if I put it in the section where the sports fans gathered.

I mainly just want to know why people who could care nothing about the game of football 364 other days of the year get all excited when the Super Bowl rolls around? Now I know the NFL has fostered a lot of this by turning the Super Bowl into more of a media thing instead of concentrating on the GAME but this just confuses and bothers me. I mean just 12 years ago the Super Bowl was still kind of more football than anything but now it's nothing more than what commercials were shown, and what controversy was raised during halftime.
Nothing is more annoying to me than sitting next to the person who knows nothing about football during the game yammering their freakin heads off about the last commercial or about the latest fashion or something.
WHY?!
I mean it would be like me going to a Tonies watching party and yaking about a 3-4 defense the entire night. I don't go because I couldn't care less about the stuff. Yet amongst my friend's its almost required that you bring along one or two or fifteen talking heads who aren't interested in the game to the party. These people then eat up all the food, drink all the drinks, block the TV and talk over the sound in the main room so much that the football fans end up watching the game in the other room on an ity bity TV only to have our fun spoiled by the interlopers crowding into our last bastion asking what we are yelling about while the same thing just happened in the other room on the TV with color.

Lay down some ground rules to anyone going to your party, if they can't let you watch the game tell them to leave. I would be pissed if that happend to me, especially since I'm a die hard Pats fan.

What about, "I watch for the commercials" option. That's what I used to do, lately they've been sucking too.

Now, it's another excuse to eat an assortment of snacks and fatty food I'd normally never eat, and it's my one day of the year I allow myself to feed my EZCheese addiction, and then I just make margaritas and drink and drink till I I can't see the score anymore.

This year I will probably go snowboarding instead though.

I won't be watching friends reruns but I certainly won't be watching the Super Bowl. I just won't be watching anything...I'm sure I can find something more important and/or entertaining to do.

Lockjaw,

I can't answer that question, but I completely agree with your point. In fact, I personally fail to understand why people who have never played a particular sport / don't play a particular sport care as much as some people do. I know people who have no athletic talent or desire to cultivate any, who can throw off sports statistics like it was going out of style. I'm not coming down on them - do what you like - but I don't understand it. The only reason I can understand watching professional athletes play is if you want to learn from their technique. Otherwise, like Secret said, I can frankly think of a lot of other things I would rather do which I consider more productive. Then again, I'm one of those a$$holes who doesn't own a T.V., etc.

I agree with SM70, here. My choice wasn't on the poll, which is that my wife and I will go to the movies during the Super Bowl. We usually make it a double-feature on Super Bowl Sunday, and it's always a terrific time to go.

I personally can't stomach people who watch the Superbowl for commercials, getting drunk, acting stupid, partying, and all the other non-sense reasons people participate.

More than likely, 60% of the viewers don't have the slightest clue as to what the actual game is about as they’re more concerned with which pathetic band is performing at half time or which commercial was the most entertaining. Quite frankly, the big game has become far too commercialized and what it’s really about has been forgotten…sad really.

Anyway, I usually watch the game home alone simply because I am watching it for the game, no other reason at all, although this years game is going to be ultra lame (seriously, does anyone care to see the Patsies again?), I’m still looking forward to it.

I never watch the Super Bowl. However, last year I caught the half-time show while I was getting ready to go out. Not quite what I was expecting. That one incident has caused so much controversy. No, I won't be watching this year.

The choices are missing a few that could apply:

- I'm more than a casual fan and I've invested serious cash on this game
- It's an event and I have friends that wish to throw a good par-tay to enjoy it
- I love the commercials and can't wait to count the number of erectile dysfunction ads they play!
- Two words: Janet Jackson (** that is just a joke...okay? Okay. **)

Personally for me...neither of these teams is from my hood so I really don't give a hoot who wins. The party however is at my house so I'll be serving top shelf booze and some darn good eats Doors open at 4pm...

Well I guess this would be the poll option for me

While I am not big on watching sports, I generally know enough to keep up with most sports. Also, how often is the Superbowl a close game? I consider the game being close or at least interesting better to keep me entertained while waiting for the commercials.

Because even football haters are attracted to the two words "Super" and "Bowl" like moths to a flame.

Just a question though for the folks who go to Super Bowl parties who aren't fans...would you go to say...a watching party for Desperate Housewives if you weren't really a fan of that?
And also would any of you get offended if the football fans asked you to pipe down in the middle of the game?

Why not? For the past three years Mrs. O'Rights has dragged me, in my tux, to an Academy Awards party, at a hotel ballroom. I can't say "lame" loudly enough, but it makes her happy. *shrug*

i don't give a rats ass about super bowl personally. i'm not, nor have i ever been, a football fan.

growing up however, my parents always watched and they always had a party. so it became a tradition of sorts to celebrate. my current bf is a huge football fan--he watches the games and then wants to watch espn recap the same game he just watched, for hours. he particularly enjoys going to a sports bar so he can watch 4 different games being played at once (which is amazing to me--he can't hear a word i say if he's watching only one game, but he can pay attention to 4 games on different sets at the same time?).

why do i care? i don't. why will i go to the party? because my bf wants me there. the only joy i get is booze and commercials. please, don't begrudge me those two simple pleasures as i sit through a couple of hours of torture in the name of love.

and no, i wouldn't get upset if someone told me to shut up mid-game. however, i know for a fact that anyone who's watching the game can't really hear me as they are incapable of understanding anything that doesn't pertain to the actual game (as evidenced all season long).
