Hey wannabe ... try to be original, please [a rant]

I can't stand bandwagon humor. People that see someone else is getting the attention, then they take whatever that thing was that got the other person attention and try to modify it slightly then regurgitate it.

I HATE THAT

It happens with posting too. You have some really clever or thoughtful post and people decide "hey since blue went over so well I'll start this blue green conversation over here and they'll tell me how bright and good I am just like they told that person". But they never tell you that do they bandwagoners?... its because you're not! Come up with your own stuff, for crying out loud... stop living in other people's limelight. Figure out what makes you you and then milk that, develop it. You have great ideas, you don't have to ride other people's coat tails.

Do you want to be remembered as "the guy that was kind of like that other guy, just not quite as good"?

I get REALLY embarrassed for people in party/public situations that regurgitate jokes or ride on joke coat tails. You've seen it... the crowd that laughs genuinely at someone's something and then the sad follower wanna be that follows up with the rehash only to get politely giggled at and then all the uncomfortable and annoyed people disperse for "drinks" or to go to the bathroom... really just to get away from wannabe.

BoCo 04-20-2003 04:56 AM

I totally agree with you Marco. I have something similar that happens to me at work all the time. I have these great ideas and someone always ends up stealing them before I get the full chance to share with my boss. I have learned well to write my ideas down, then give them directly to my boss instead of asking anyone else what they think.

I feel that we are all individuals here and in life. That being said, we should all have our own ideas and thoughts without having to try to get ourselves glorified by what others say and do. This isn't a popularity contest anyways.. because we are ALL unique and special in our own ways. No one is better than anyone else.

Sometimes I am original
Sometimes, someone comes up with a good idea I want to do myself.

I'm just me, no more no less.
I don't try to be original,
but sometimes it just works out that way.

Grondar 04-20-2003 05:39 AM

"Stick em up, STICK EM UP!"

.....

"Up top!"

/end very obscure reference.

I do agree tho Marco, it is anoying, especially since my material is so golden. ;)

sbscout 04-20-2003 06:06 AM

well said

Magpie0001 04-20-2003 08:56 AM

Crack me up Boco!

JadziaDax 04-20-2003 10:01 AM

Why be original? It takes too much work, and most people are lazy asses. Why come up with your own material? Why be the person to set an example?

Be a sheep...

Come on everyone, let me hear you "baa".

That being said...
Time for me to go be myself so people can continue to stare at my tits :)

yournamehere 04-20-2003 11:03 AM

Didn't someone just post this yesterday on another board?

cdwonderful 04-20-2003 11:36 AM

I think so

Hmmmmm. Be original, what an original idea. Hope it catches on. The original ideas are the ones I enjoy the most.

Especially the humurous ones.

G_Whiz 04-21-2003 06:06 AM

I agree with you up to a point.

Sometimes a thread will trigger a thought that needs to go into a different direction from the original. Rather than clutter one good thread with multiple directions, I prefer to start a new thread. The trick is to make the difference clear.

Now, if it is just a juvenile attempt to get attention, don't bother. But if it interests you, go for it.

Just another opinion.

Macheath 04-21-2003 06:10 AM

I could only think of one thing as I read that rant.

I suppose I'm being unoriginal by hyper-linking the work of others - ah well, so be it.

maximusveritas 04-21-2003 06:14 AM

Yeah Marco, I completely agree.
I can't stand bandwagon humor either. People that see someone else is getting the attention, then they take whatever that thing was that got the other person attention and try to modify it slightly then regurgitate it.

I'm sorry. I missed that. I was staring at your tits.

Baaaaaa

rsl12 04-21-2003 07:35 AM

the worst offenders are commercials--people who weren't creative or artistic enough to create their own works, stealing something original and beautiful for the sake of selling doritos.

Go_AVS 04-21-2003 08:30 AM

baa, baa

Nice Tits!

Cynthetiq 04-21-2003 08:43 AM

yeah.. well that reminds me of a new thread that I should go post .. had nothing to do with the bandwagon thing but...

ronan 04-21-2003 10:47 AM

hahahhaah... macheath... that link was excellent.. witty, very witty.

Daval 04-21-2003 10:50 AM

I much prefer when a person is there own person if that makes any sense.

jjibad 04-21-2003 02:33 PM

I'm sorry what was the question again?

:(

zf0enix 04-21-2003 02:52 PM

Are you talking about people here, or Hollywood studios? They haven't come up with much original stuff in, like, years.

zmbabwe 04-21-2003 03:54 PM

The people you are describing are like the popular people in high school. Remember in the novel Cather in the Rye the main character hates "phonies?" That's what the peopl you're describing are.

MexicanOnABike 04-21-2003 03:56 PM

hehehe... yes

meembo 04-21-2003 03:59 PM

All you usually have to do is introduce a new vocabulary word into what you say, and the idiots quickly show their limitations

Don't let the bastards get you down

You got that right, friend.
All these so-called reality shows on T.V. are working my last nerve.

I can sympathize. I have a very similar situation at my work. Everyone knows that a particular person steals ideas. So, everyone is afraid to talk about ideas when this person is anywhere in the vicinity. It really stymies information exchange and creativity.

Johnny Rotten 04-26-2003 11:33 AM

From what I can tell, unfortunately not enough people are sufficiently creative and witty to start their own fire and instead must settle for "riffing" on other people. Most people also don't particularly care about the limelight of others.

World's King 04-26-2003 12:04 PM

This for some reason reminded me of the "No Fear" shirt fad.

Goddamn that made someone wanna put a .45 in their mouth and pray for a good looking corpse.

w3r7y 04-26-2003 12:09 PM

lol No Fear

that was dumb

guthmund 04-26-2003 01:02 PM

Isn't as bad as the Naked Co-Ed fad or the Ain't Skeered fad. I remember when everyone had those friggen' shirts.

And there was a "Johnson" shirt fad too that just made me want to beat someone with a rusty iron skillet.

Neo 04-26-2003 01:14 PM

L M F A O !!

It's just human nature. When you learn to work around it and not let it bother you, THEN you have succeeded.

BTW....

Hope you don't mind ME staring at your tits. They're terrific! Are they yours? ;)

There are a lot more sheep than shepherds, so this kind of behavior is inevitable. It may even serve some socialization function. We are all guilty of it to some degree at some point, but most of your active TFPers are the type who minimize "me too" type behavior.

In that vein:

Hmmm,,,

How about " Do you want a terrorist living in England thread"
Mr. Aziz wants immunity and a place in the Hertfordshire countryside.
Worth it or not?

timbuk2 09-30-2004 08:25 PM

Wannabe?

Methinks humor should make as many people smile as possible...Barring the assholes of course.

Suave 09-30-2004 09:20 PM

You mean like "I'm Rick James bitch!"?
I heard it hundreds, maybe thousands of times before I actually got to see the skit, and it made the skit less funny than it should have been. :(

edit: On that note, I'm thinking of getting a "Mrs. Strombolopolous" t-shirt.

buffto 09-30-2004 11:05 PM

hmm, sort of reminds me of a flash animation trend that has really pissed me off as of late. y'know the ones where they oh-so-cleverly lure the viewer into concentrating on the screen and getting really close. yeah, concentrate real hard, motherfucker. then BAM. some scary pic or something with some ear piercing scream playing in the background. har dee har har, never gets old. never saw it coming.

okay, i'm through.

I actually slap people for saying that, but since slapping was part of the skit, they assume I'm just playing along and don't get the idea that I want them to shut the fuck up. I need a taser.
