Winter hits Alabama.....finally
Well, the weather computers tell us it is 21 degrees outside, but our local weather report told us to disregard that. Apparently, the computers are malfunctioning.......imagine that.
Right now there is freezing rain falling, the water has frozen into droplets on the leaves, and the flag pole has icicles. Sure does sound like 21 degrees to me.... Having experienced several 10 below Iowa winters with 4 foot snow drifts, I can knowingly declare that an Alabama ice storm is much more malevolent. |
and its coming our way....its been sleeting here since about 4 o'clock, they are saying we'll get down to 27 in our area tonite.....What part of bama are you in?
|
I'm in Auburn, straight down the interstate from Atlanta.
|
 are your stores as devoid of milk and bread as our are?
we got stuff to cook in the fireplace if we lose power.....marshemallows, chocolate and graham crackers  |
We hit Kroger at 5:00. It took us an hour to pick up a few necessities.....peanut butter, Vanilla Wafers and graham crackers....and then check out. It was packed.
|
I know how you feel, in NC there was hardly a flake of snow earlier in the winter, but now we are being bombarded week after week with heavy snows, and I'm loving every minute of it!
|
ok so how hard did it hit?
at 7 am I85, 985, 75, and 20 were all closed. Nobody going anywhere....at least we havent lost power yet |
We haven't lost power, either, thanks in no small part to our power company. They've spent the last three days cutting ALL (and I do mean all) branches and limbs away from the power lines everywhere I've been. They came into our yard and cut a grand total of two holly branches away from our power supply line near the house, but all the yards everywhere else have enormous stacks of limbs, and the trees look like a hurricane just went through.
It is rare indeed to see a utility company recognize that a big expense BEFORE a storm is much more preferable to an enormous expense and shitty situation AFTER a storm. Our yard is a delightful winter wonderland with no snow; everything is encased in ice. I fed the yard rabbits last night and the birds this morning (they had gathered expectantly). As the sleet falls, it tinkles upon the ice already formed, producing a sound that is indescribable. I like this "nobody going anywhere" part, too, because the sounds of cars and trucks is absent from the background as I listen to the sleet. As I typed this, I heard what sounded like gunfire, so I know a big pine tree limb must have snapped somewhere nearby. |
We didn't get it as bad as the Atlanta area. We've still got ice and sleet, but the roads are passable. A lot of pine limbs have been falling, but we never lost power. Be careful over in Georgia. And NC, it's headed your way.

Its 1115 and its still sleeting pretty hard where I am.....icicles hanging off everything...its really pretty.
We have a big fire going and we are FINALLY getting to watch Survivor season 1 on DVD  |
Yes, it is gorgeous. All of the trees are white from the ice on the branches.
Season 1 was the best. Rich is a classic. |
Its the only season I havent seen  I got the dvd for my birthday last summer and havent had time to watch it.
Right now my daughter is out playing in the backyard with the dog and dave "skating" all over the back yard....with my bronchitis I dont dare go out....I cant take another week at home in the bed!!! |
Skating in the back yard...now THAT sounds like fun. Best to stay in though. The weather reports are expecting another storm next weekend similar to this one. So, we may be in for more.
Of all the Survivors, I think the first season is still my favorite. Maybe because it was so new and fresh at the time. The shows are different now, but I still watch. |
They had a blast and thankfully no one broke any bones  Dont know the episode number but they are voting now to get down to 5 so Im almost over lol
Australia is still my favorite but this one has been really good Feb 17th we get an all new one!! |
nothing but a cold rain here on Maxwell AFB. i think we got most of the chill without the beauty of the ice.

OMG Richard Hatch won!!! what a shocker
I hadnt realized that the first season actually awarded the prize AT the final tribal council and there was no waiting. I absolutely loved it. We finally finished about 11 last nite and this morning while waiting for the thaw we are going to watch the out takes DVD. Everything is still white but they say it will get to 44 degrees, which will be good as we have to head out to the funeral home this afternoon and I was afraid we'd be stuck in again today. Didnt know that about colleen, she was cute, but I didnt like her. |
Rich was my favorite during the run of that season. I really wanted him to win. Unfortunately, last week it came out that he did not report his winnings on his taxes, therefore he is in big, big trouble.
