"Tsunami Song"

Im not sure to put this here or tiltled music, but have any of you heard this racist song from Hot97? I dont see how making fun of tsunami vicitms and asians is funny in anyway.

Heres a news article on it http://www.nydailynews.com/front/sto...p-235138c.html

Quote:
How could they make fun
of such a tragedy?

Outrage over awful lyrics to HOT 97's racist 'Tsunami Song'

BY FRANK LOMBARDI
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Hip-hop radio station HOT 97 has sparked outrage across the city by airing a twisted song that shockingly mocks the 200,000 victims of the South Asian tsunami.
The radio station, WQHT, was forced to air an apology yesterday after the insulting song - whose lyrics include racial epithets aimed at Asians - was played for four days last week by morning deejay Miss Jones.

"We are absolutely appalled, saddened, outraged and angered," said Kai Yu of Asian Media Watch.

The nasty parody, sung to the tune of "We Are the World," makes light of how the killer tsunami "washed your whole country away."

Some of the other tasteless lyrics refer jokingly to orphaned children being sold into slavery.

"You're sick," City Councilman Robert Jackson (D-Manhattan) fumed at HOT 97.

Before one airing of the song, the station's news reader, Miss Info, who is of Asian descent, objected to the song, only to be attacked by Jones and her cohorts.

"That song is really offensive to me, and I opted not to involve myself," Miss Info said.

Jones replied, "I know you feel you're superior because you're Asian, but you're not." Later, co-host Todd Lyn, incensed at Miss Info's criticism, said, "I'm going to start shooting Asians."

Councilman John Liu (D-Queens) said it was outrageous that the station, owned by Emmis Communications Corp., aired the song for four days.

"It degrades the more than 200,000 victims," Liu said.

Liu and other Asian leaders have called for the Federal Communications Commission to crack down on the station and demanded that Miss Jones, whose full name is Tarsha Jones, be fired.

Jones and program director John Dimick both read apologies on the air yesterday.

"HOT 97 regrets the airing of material that made light of a serious and tragic event," Dimick said. "We apologize to our listeners and anyone who was offended."

Jones and six people working on her show will donate a week of their salaries to tsunami relief, Dimick said.

But Dimick refused to say whether Jones would be fired.

Originally published on January 25, 2005

Here are the lyrics

There was a time, when the sun was shining bright
So I went down to the beach to catch me a tan
Then the next thing I knew, a wave 20 feet high
Came and washed your whole country away

And all at once, you can hear the screaming chinks
And no one was saved from the wave
There were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away
You can hear God laughing, 'Swim you bitches swim.'

[Chorus]
So now you're screwed, it's the tsunami,
You better run and kiss your ass away, go find your mommy
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head
And now your children will be sold to child slavery

If you want to hear it http://www.3030radio.com/

All i have to say is that i hope action is taken, and Miss Jones is fired.

Ok, that is just sick and tasteless. And it sounds like someone just trying to get ratings through shock value instead of talent.

And sadly, it worked. It reminds me a spoiled kid who just wants attention. And doesn't care if it’s the right or wrong kind. Just as long as somebody is watching them act the fool.

And the really sad part, they are getting it. Maybe we should top off the punishment with a trip to the wood shed.

that is sick and tasteless indeed. the song is terrible, but i think miss jones's remarks, as well as the other guy's, towards miss info are just as bad. i think not only should they be fired, but the government should punish them by making them take elementary school over. that would be incredibly humorus and creative, and so degrading that they would never be racist again.

If you find the song sick and tastless (as I do), turn the radio off. No big deal, it's not worth censoring or punishing anyone over. There's a reason radios have an off button and multiple stations.

It's hard to tell from the article, but it sounds like Miss Info raised her objection on the air, that was all that she needed to say. The fact that Miss Jones made her racist comment on the air, is perhaps a firable offence, but having the FTC get involved for a person's thoughts is extreme. if Todd Lynn said his comments on the air, well then, arrest his sorry stupid ass for making that threat. if it wasn't said on air, then well, you can't punish someone for their thoughts.

Every day, someone is going to be offended by something... I can choose to let it bother me or not bother me. it's people who alert the media and bitch at the top of their lungs, turn attention to what would probably be a non-event.

I turn the other cheek as often as anyone...it's a great thing to do. But not everyone can do it, that doesn't lend itself to a healthy society. If we ignore racism, it will not go away. If we should have learned anything from history, it's that ignoring the problem does not make it go away. But in this case, I guess I agree...the bad publicity and fear for their jobs is enough to stop them from ever doing it again. But it won't stop others from doing it.

No such thing as bad publicity, the radio station will get money from people who want to hear what other horrid things they are going to say.

I don't agree with what was said, but she can say whatever she wants, it is her right.
If the government punish or fired them, I'd be real scared about who else they'd start punishing and firing.

I believe in free speech . . . and I know that free speech protects even this kind of distasteful expression . . . But geeze . . .

That song is in extremely poor taste and downright hurtful to the victims and those who lost loved ones . . . it's really disgusting that someone could so separate themselves from a tragedy of this magnitude to view it in a humorous and not to mention racist light in order to gain publicity . . . The person who wrote it is disturbed indeed.

Hmmm...that guy who made fun Martin Luther King two weeks ago (TV Weather man) by "accident got fired AND he issued a public apology.

I guess it's ok to advocate "shooting Asians" (not free speech) but not ok to unwittingly make fun of Dr. King.

Someone justify that please.....

You all know things would be different if they had said "nigger", "kike", or "faggot" in the song. Michael Jackson had to rewrite his song a few years back: He had to take out the line, "kike me" which his Jewsih layer said wasn't a big deal. GO figure...

So if they can do that, then they can certainly fire Miss Thang and make her apologize, for real.

Also, could someone please tell me how a woman's breast (Janet Jackson "incident") is more offensive than advocating the death of an entire race enough to warrant a public apology and a fine?

Well, at least some action has been taken against Miss Jones and the morning show. They have all been indefinitely suspended by Emmis the owners of Hot 97.

Emmis Suspends Hot 97 Morning Show Over Tsunami Joke

January 26, 2005

Emmis-owned WQHT (Hot 97)/New York has indefinitely suspended the entire staff of the Miss Jones in the Morning show over a spoof song written about the Asian tsunami disaster. The morning show repeatedly ran the segment last week, which was a parody of the song "We Are The World." The song used racial slurs about Asians and made jokes about child slavery and people's mothers being killed.

"What happened is morally and socially indefensible," said Emmis President Rick Cummings in a statement. "All involved, myself included, are ashamed and deeply sorry. I know the members of the morning show are truly contrite. They know their actions here are inexcusable."

On Monday, the station and Miss Jones apologized and the seven-member morning crew agreed to donate one week's pay to relief efforts.

If only we had magical powers that would allow them to have to live one week in the souls of those who lost family members and homes to the tsunami, like that Twilight Zone episode, then maybe they'd understand why what they did was so idiocally wrong.

What a joke
Since when was Hip Hop about being racist and being ignorant, huh?
Tell me that

I'm only gonna say this once (once)
Somebody gotta say it (word)
Check it (talk to em)

You got it twisted
If you think I'm here to cock block on a bunch of
No talent wannabe, shock jocks (nah)
And they say it's all freedom of speech
Well you just lost yours
Read 'em and weep

We won't be happy till you fired
My peoples is pissed homes
And I bet you not a soul would miss Jones (Miss who?)
My point exact
And tell the rest of your staff
That they need to clean up they act

Fuck the tsunami song
And whoever thought of it
Matter of fact, fuck the engineer that recorded it
And the brains behind the scenes that applauded it
Anything for ratings (huh)
This shit is corporate
That little bullshit statement has got to be
The world's most half assed apology

Yet thousands are still getting discovered each day
How dare you compare a life to a week's pay
Interested, y'all quick to have smack fests
But those who really need to ain't get slapped yet

And it's rare that I'm even rapping pissed
Jin is far from a human rights activist
So don't take this in a political fashion
Nope, it's just a good old lyrical bashing

In fact I'm making it a mission of mine
I won't stop till every last petition is signed
Hip Hop is designed to unify the masses
And we demand that you be denied the access (gimme that)

Radio is whack yo, somebody got to say this (say it)
Same five songs on every single play list
And bad karma is the worst way to go
So I pray that God has mercy on your soul (yeah)

I mean you knew I was going to have something to say about this whole situation
Cause for some odd reason, whenever some shit like this happens in
regard my peoples
in this society, in the media
It always manages to get swept under the rug or end up right below the
radar for some reason
Like it never happened

But let it be any other race and this shit would've been hit the fan

All my soldiers out there
It's time for our voices to be heard, yo
No more of that shit (uh huh)
But you know I got love for everybody
Whether you black, white, Hispanic
That's why I love Hip Hop cause it brings us all together
I'm just saying don't let it your peoples that they dissing next time
Making fun of they tragedies just for a cheap laugh

You sitting there like "What the fuck?"
Know what I'm saying
So yo, keep them emails going through man
Keep those complaint letters going out
Keep them phone calls going in to the radio station and the sponsors
Telling them how you feel
And what a fucked up move they made

Let them know, let them know it's about the people
And shout out to Miss Info too
Keep your head up ma (yeah)

Coppertop. Please check your facts.

Somalia had up to 200 casualties, and thousasnds of homes destroyed. Kenya, Tanzania and the Seychelles were also affected. Chinese citizens were killed and several are still missing.

It went as far as Somalia/East Coast of Africa? Didn't know that. And while China may have had citizens affected, so did the US. That doesn't exactly make it a US disaster now, does it?

All in all, it was in rather poor taste.

Poor taste. Mocking people for what happened is grade school humor. I've never really liked the whole shock jock thing. I listened to Stern here and there and found some of his stuff funny, but the whole slew of wannabes that followed just try to see how low they can go for a joke, usually at an unknowing persons expense.

That’s some gnarly shit - and as much as I’d love to be violently intolerant of intolerant people, it's not my call to judge them (There goes the printing of the "Tool of Karma" shirt and the Thinktank engraved "Aluminum Bat of Equality"), and with no religious connotation whatsoever, I do think that what goes around does come around . They should probably get fired, as that’s as far from professionalism as things come... but you cant argue that they have the right to write these things.

It is a world-wide disaster. Coppertop, you specifically mentioned Africans, and 'Chinamen', a term which I do not use in polite conversation. Please do not minimize the value of any one person's life, from any continent. Joeseph Stalin said "One death is a tragedy; A million is a statistic." He was partially right. The radio show's insensitivity has earned them the notoriety and the consequences they were seeking.

Opie and Anthony are the names of the guys, but if you look at this, I was listening to them on XM the other day when they were talking about this song, The surprising thing is the person who wrote it was their old producer at the station they got fired at. They played the song and what the people on the station said about it.

Hot 97 has given Todd Lynn the boot. He got fired without severance pay. You did it to yourself, man. Still don't know about the others who took part in the "Tsunami Song" —Miss Jones and DJ Envy. I suppose we'll find out soon. It's crazy. I never thought all the protests would actually result in terminations. Usually with this sort of thing, we get a pat on the head, and MAYBE an apology. But get a tsunami involved, and you can get someone's ass fired.
