No.

ninety09 05-23-2003 05:23 PM

No. People that can't spell properly annoy me.

arael 05-23-2003 05:44 PM

it's the only thing more annoying than ALL CAP!!!!

ARTelevision 05-23-2003 05:45 PM

the only use is what it was invented for
passwords
-marginally better than plain obvious text words for people who need memorable ones, etc

Phaenx 05-23-2003 05:51 PM

I heard the explanation for l33t was that back in the day people would use it to throw off admins or something searching for warez and what not.

juanvaldes 05-23-2003 06:11 PM

I hate it.

If I see it I will kick you.

oblar 05-23-2003 06:20 PM

Can't stand it personally.. I laugh about it when someone uses it for the first sentence, after that it is just annoying.

My friends and I will sometimes throw in a 1337 speak just to poke fun at it, but in serious conversation I abhor it.

cheese 05-23-2003 09:28 PM

Phaenx: i know this the question was refering to why ppl STILL use it

phoenix1002 05-23-2003 09:40 PM

I have no idea why people still use it for entire sentances... Every once in a while, I'll say a word or two in '1337' speak just to annoy my friend, but when people actually write in it, it's just annoying. It seems like the only people who really use it anymore (by use I mean as a completely alternate form of writing) are 12-year-olds who still think that it's "cool". My cousin types like that on AIM... I refuse to talk to him until he starts typing in real English.

Along the same lines, check out this link, it's Romeo and Juliet translated into "1337" so the younger generations can understand this classic literature. It's pretty funny, actually.

Halx 05-23-2003 10:30 PM

there's no skill in being able to spell a word only one way!

:)

Lebell 05-23-2003 10:38 PM

Annoying to the extreme and a sign of immaturity if that's all you use, IMHO.

ND_Ranger 05-23-2003 10:42 PM

I take great pleasure in mocking those who use 31337 speak. I'm known to run around shouting "haxor" at the top of my lungs. I also have made comments about "copxors" and "sexors", both of which have resulted in expensive problems. Damn script kiddies can't even spell correctly.

SecretMethod70 05-24-2003 01:53 AM

You're lucky this thread has some discussional merit or else I may have warned you right here just for using it in the thread title ;)

From what I can tell, 1337 is only used by people who have no other way to prove their worth over the internet. No self-respecting 'net user uses 1337 anymore.

me too.

i'm a very picky/perfectionist person, and the ability to spell has always come naturally to me,
so of course i cannot understand why some others find it so difficult.
(...or, why some people are too lazy to fix their damn typos).

*however*...

choosing to spell something differently...is a different matter.

why would someone do this?
from my own experience, my #1 motivator is efficiency.
why should i type 'though' when i can just type 'tho'?
(obviously only appropriate in certain informal settings...)

and sometimes, it's æsthetics.
i do not have any specific examples atm, but i do know there've been occasions where i've manipulated, perverted letters and text for some other purpose..

now...regarding '1337-speek' ...

i use it sometimes in small doses, with people who i kno won't be annoyed with it. in such contexts, can be 'funny' or 'cute' (since i'm a girl..)
and i must admit, in my Google prefs i oft have 'Hacker' selected as my display language.

to each their own, i suppose...

altho it would quite likely annoy the fuck out of me if i had to converse with a 12-yr old in such a way.
bleh.

:)

Cynthetiq 05-24-2003 04:25 AM

i never used it. I saw it as a sign of 'computer ghetto' along the lines of aiight and sappening?

ratbastid 05-24-2003 05:00 AM

I have a theory that it was ALWAYS the 12-year-olds speaking 1337. They've just grown up now and handed the k33b04rd to a new generation of k00| d00dxors.

Derwood 05-24-2003 05:51 AM

Yeah, you should still use it if you are a 35 year old linux using virgin who lives in his mom's basement and looks like Peter Jackson.

mtsgsd 05-24-2003 08:31 AM

Funny, I was just speculating with another tfp'er on why we haven't been seeing it on this forum. Looks like the moderators are doing a good job of policing the forum. It's funny when you're reading megatokyo.com, not while reading a thread.

Plummie 05-24-2003 12:52 PM

--"Eleet speak." Do you use it and why?--

I don't use it at all, but I can certainly translate it.

I love the responses to this thread so far. :D Funny topic.

Same here for the following reason.

It's fun to goof around at times and talk h4X0r, but that's like once a year maybe, if that.

Um, actually, most leet-speakers aren't Linux users. Or BSD users. Heck, they're not even real Windows users. They're just, for lack of a better word, posers who are trying to show off and be something they are not.

REAL 35 year old Linux users who look like Peter Jackson *cough* Richard Stallman *cough* don't live in their parent's basement because they're busy making more money than any MSCE could ever dream of because they actually have knowledge about computers beyond "let's restart it and see if it works." Aside for that, they'd never use leet because they're busy on forums like these making fun of those that do ;)

You know, I think you're probably pretty correct on this one. Thinking back to when I was around 12 years old I had a couple hacker/poser friends who would use leet sometimes and thought they were so cool because they could write a vb script to deltree c:/windows and could use backorifice and other commonly spread trojans to get onto people's computers. I'm not friends with them anymore.

Then there was myself and my other friends whom I am still friends with who thought that was stupid and immature, not to mention un-ethical. And, lastly, of course there was the fact that any idiot can do the things they thought they were cool for doing. Needless to say, we didn't speak in leet.

eyeronic 05-24-2003 01:39 PM

Never knew it had a name. I finally know what 133+ is after all these years. Never had a need for it, never will.

Kllr Wolf 05-24-2003 02:02 PM

To me it, the people who use it to communicate are trying to sound like they know what they are doing on a computer when they have to call tech support just to turn it on.

Derwood 05-24-2003 03:03 PM

What I want to know is, what the fuck does "w00t" mean?

ToiletDuck 05-24-2003 03:40 PM

Ill always be a user and a fan of high ascii, waiting for the day when someone creates a "l337" keyboard

Hehee, it means "woohoo!" or "yippee!" in geek language. :p

MrFlux 05-24-2003 05:48 PM

I use it when mocking a certain person on IRC who once said "im not g33k like yous"

LOL! Pissed myself laughing, that was great!

darksparkles 05-24-2003 11:59 PM

not 3l373, 1337 f001!

there's no way in hell i'd use it regularly, though.

GakFace 05-25-2003 04:41 PM

ugh..... If you're a 12-14 year old boy, trying to sound "cool".... if you're not in that age range(or younger), something is SERIOUSLY wrong with you.

FuddMan 05-25-2003 05:18 PM

I only use it to make fun of 1337 5%34|<3rz, man, I am so above them intellectually. Its so fun to sneer at them...I'm off to watch arty movies and read invigorating contemporary painting critiques

TheDave87 05-25-2003 05:57 PM

i find it to be a pain in the ass... its tough to type it out and takes way too much thought to read it... i only use it when i need to make fun of it

arael 05-25-2003 06:15 PM

i think w00t started in Quake when you fraq someone.... not reall sure though
