Maybe he was distracted by his DIY trepanation.

"... We were using a flex-shaft Dremmel with a ball burr and a flame-shaped burr. The process would turn the bone and marrow to dust which would be rinsed away as we went, down to the meninges, at which point the brain would be pulsating visibly as our sign of success. We began drilling and the sound was resonating extremely loud through my skull. ..."

yabobo 01-19-2005 06:43 AM

It's time to up his insurance! Then buy a lottery ticket!
His tongue had to have been pierced too. That he had to have felt.

I can't stand a simple splinter in my finger.....!

JasWalker 01-19-2005 07:32 AM

Update from pizzamarketplace.com - really.

Would you let this man bake your pizzas?

* 19 January 2005

The Associated Press — A Littleton, Colo., construction worker who shot himself in the head with a nail gun — an accident he didn't discover until he went to the dentist with a nagging toothache — wants a new line of work.

"I'll make pizzas," said Patrick Lawler, 23. Lawler was working on a house near Breckenridge, Colo., when he accidentally fired the nail into his head...

Maybe the nail hit the part of his brain that held the memory of shoting himself in the mouth with a nail gun.

I can't wrap my mind around what he was doing to cause a misfire into his mouth.

I wouldn't believe a single view x-ray. Show me the A/P. I've seen x-rays of a broken dog leg that was repaired with a pin. In one view, the pin was right down the center of the bone. In the other view, the pin was right beside the bone.

Take an x-ray of your skull with a nail laying on your face. Looks the same.

ShaniFaye 01-20-2005 04:11 AM

I say there is something going on with this that doesnt seem quite right

wolf 01-20-2005 05:31 AM

Did he have the nail gun pressed to the roof of his mouth before it went off? You would think maybe he would notice the stream of blood coming into his mouth...."Huh, that's strange... damned gingivitis"

munchen 01-20-2005 04:04 PM

True about the single shot x-ray.

Will somebody please tell me this is false. I'm begging you, please. I don't know if I can handle a world in which this guy exists.

I have heard that you actually get this reaction from head injuries a lot- they do not hurt like we think they should, and you often get people wandering into the hospital with no clue how bad/that they are hurt - and to top that , none of us can figure out how he did it, so I can see it being a surprise to him to- I mean, from the angle you would think that it would hurt like hell, but if it didnt at the time of the accident, and he really did not feel it as it happened, it might be hard to know just what had occured- plus, if the wound is behind his tounge, the blood would drain down his throua and could be unnoticed- I am not saying that that this guy is too bright, but I do know that we had a guy walk into our local hospital with a butcher knife sticking out of his forehead, and a black eye, after a fight with a buddy- he was there cause he had been hit in the eye and could not see out of it, and had no idea he had been stabbed in the head- the fight had happended 4 hours earlier, and apparently he was not drunk- having ones brain pierced tends to set off wierd reactions in the body though, and who knows what wackiness might ensue as a result...

ouch! i'd hate to have a nail in my head like that. I'd probably notice it as soon as the nail hits me though. That's just crazy how some people can be so ignorant. Sometimes ignorance can be bliss i guess.

One time when i was a kid i stepped on a golf tee. I didnt realize it even though it was all the way in and went swimming. A little while later i went in the house and thought i had stepped on a rock that just wouldnt get unstuck from the bottom of my foot. I looked and there was the end of the tee stickin out. Granted i was like 4 or 5 at the time, but i didnt quite get any huge pain from it, even after it was being pulled out and stitched up at the hospital. So i can attest to the bad injury does not always equal huge pain thing.

Heh. Sorry, but it's real. AFAIK not the same guy but he looked very similar.

Circa '95 a site named trepan.com/org or similar had much more comprehensive pictures of a late-20's couple who did this to each other. They included well-lit pictures inside the hole that was created by what appeared to be your average 1.5" hole-saw on the end of a hand crank drill.

There I go again. My left leg starts twitching when I get creeped out. I nearly used that "Dremel/dust/resonating" quote in my sig but I can't read it and continue sitting still.

yeah that's true. One time i was digging around in some baskets for something. about an hour later my cousin said "hey, there's a needle coming out of your arm" i was pretty suprised, it hurt when i pulled it out though, because it went it pretty deep.

vorpal_rabbit 01-20-2005 11:39 PM

I haveto second teh question: How you NOT notice this? I mean, I can see how it might happen. What I DON'T see is how there wouldn't be any blood, or screaming pain, or things of that nature.
