anyone offhand know if film is affected by x-rays?? max size for carry on bag?? will a regular backpack be good?? is a regular mach3 shaving razor in my luggage ok?
|
If you have doubts, you shouldn't bring it.
|
i dont know about the film, but i always have a backback or medium size duffle bag as carry-on
your fine with the mach3 razor |

Yes, film is very affected by the x-rays they scan your luggage with. Its a wierd occurance because it doesn't always happen. What it can do is leave red bands through the negatives ruining most/all of the frames. I'm a professional photographer and I always carry all my film as a carry on. The scanners get really pissed at me and give me shit but I make them hand scan it. If this is something important to you add in at least 20 min to your departure time. They will run a special rag over the film canister and tube and then process the piece of cloth for contaminates. This may be time consuming but your film will stay in tact and you have total control over who touches your documented memories : )
Hope this helps |

soo i should just carry it on me when i go though the metal detectors? |
No film in your luggage, and signs are posted in the airport to that effect... Carry it on. The signs posted at security say the xrays are only harmful if it's over 1000 Speed. But, they are good about if you ask them nicely to not scan it... keep the film in a bag, that you can grab in one shot, and keep it accessible.. hand it to the guard and they will pass it over the xray machines.. I see people do this all the time.. it's not a big deal for them.. Just remember toi pick it up at the other end.
|
what do you mean by 1000speed??
i'm using that 35mm advantex film |
Most consumer film is 200-800 speed. It shoiuld say on the package somewhere.
|
there's different speeds of film - depedning on what you are using it for - (I'm not a photographer at all -_ i just read labels) 100, 200, 400, 1000 -- 1000 I beleive is professional type use only - and the lower the speed the less/more amount of light needed -- i'm not sure which is which right now - but one speed is better if you are outdoors in direct sun, another is better if you are indoors in lowlight.
I think it's the ISO if the film? |
its 400 film... lol
how should i carry it... just like ziplock bag it or something... or jam it all in my pockets??? i got my camera, which is loaded and a 4 roll pack... |
airports are so paranoid now. I wouldn't want to bring anything other than the items that i really need. I would suggest you do not take the razor, because they might see it as a potential weapon

I'd have to beleive that someone didn't sit down and randomly compile that list. That list came into being because people actually did try to carry on the items on those lists.

Your razor is fine in your checked luggage. It would probably get by in checked luggage but that just depends on who is doing the checking. Some can be *very* picky.
As for the film, a zip lock bag should do it. They usually have smaller trays that you can put your change into... put the bag in that and ask them not to put it through the scanner. Most likely they will give it a cursory look and wave it through. In the worst case scenario they will take extra time to swap and check for explosive residue as Zippy has described. Again this depends on the person doing the checking. |

You guys are lucky - I've gone through here in Phoenix and they would NOT let me go through without sending my film with my regular stuff. They wouldn't hand it over, wouldn't just do a cursery glance. If my film had been ruined, there would have been hell to pay. It happened to one of my friends on all of his pictures from our trip to Italy, so be wary when they say that ALL pictures are safe.

the benefits of digital: don't have to worry about film :-)
|
A backpack will be fine for carry on. Bring your film with you in your backpack. The last time I flew, I was able to take it out and put it in a tray with pocket change, etc. and it was fine ( I use advantix too). The razor should be fine as long as it is in your checked luggage; I've never had a problem with bringing a razor as long as it wasn't in my carry on.

they you gotta worry about a expensive camera, i'm leaving my digital at home :D |
Just tell them you have the film and they do the same security check as they do for labtops. But it also really depends on the airport you're in and the mood the security is in that day. Good luck though.

As for putting razors in your checked luggage... you can put a fricken Bowie Knife in your checked luggage. The only issue with sharp things and percieved weapons is in carry on. |
I fly every week, and I have my Schick Quattro in my "carry-on" every time with no trouble. You won't have any problems with "safety" razors in carry-on luggage. A straight razor would be a big problem, though.
|
I have put film through the xray many times and never had a problem with it fogging.
I don't think the lead bags work any more. If they can't see what is in the bag with xray they probably will make you open everything up and show it to them. |
Film should be checked seperately, just for safetys sake. They should be more than willing(although they will bitch and moan) to check it seperately, keep it in your carry on and pull it out just as you get close enough to the gate and ask them politely.
As far as the razor, depends on where you're coming/going if you want it to be carry on.. hell Ive checked in my knives before. I spoke with the ticketing agents before I arrived at the airport, made sure all my knives were in plastic blade covers as well as in my roll up kit inside my large duffel bag. I CALLED beforehand to double check, I called when I was on airport property, and I told the lady at the check in counter and she said it was ok since they were warned. Most likely if I can get away with several large knives, your razor will be fine. |
hehe, i'm back, all is good, i brought back a indiana jones whip on the plane :D , i spent a crap load of money on stuff there
|
depends on the type of film. any film speed faster than 400 is affected by xrays. infrared is definitely affected, and certain "different" types of film will be affected. however, xray machines are getting more powerful, and ive heard cases of ISO 200 film being ruined. this is only for film that is not yet developed/processed. if your film is already processed, you have nothing to worry about.
if youre carrying film, do not put it in checked luggage, as the more powerful xray machines are used for those. |
