Deaf or Blind?
A friend and I were discussing the issue of which sense we would rather lose if we had no choice, our sight or hearing? Both of us came to the conclusion that we would much rather lose our hearing than sight by a long shot.
Main reason for me is that almost everything I do and everything I enjoy involves sight. My education and work require me to sit on a computer all day and produce graphics. On my personal time, I spend the majority either reading, playing videogames, watching football, jogging outside and enjoying various scenery (I love the beauty of nature), etc, most of which can't be done without sight. I'm curious to find out which between the two would you rather keep and why? |

I'd rather be deaf. I couldn't get used to being not able to see anything.

I voted for Blind... Sure, I wouldn't be able to do what I do for a living these days, but I'll find something else, and it will give me the opportunity to explore music and musicianship to a much deeper extent. I can't live without music and hearing the voices of my loved ones.

I voted blind, but it would be awful losing either. With deafness you can't listen to music or hear anyone talk or laugh ... that would be pretty tough for me to swallow. And with blindness you miss out on books, video games, ogling the opposite sex etc. I guess you could get books on tape, but it's just not the same.

I absolutely love music but I don't think still being able to enjoy it if I chose to be blind would be worth it. I can imagine my life without hearing, there are so many things I enjoy looking at that equal my enjoyment from music.
I'd choose deafness over blindness anyday. |

I would choose blind.....I can always get books on tape/cd for "reading" purposes, I would have a VERY hard time without music and being able to hear my sweeties voice when we have sex

I'm undecided.
Being blind, one would have to use an imagination during sex. Like think of the face of the voice. That would totally rock. On the other hand, being deaf, one could get a good night's sleep for once. And I would think curing deafness would be easier that curing blindness.

I voted for going blind. Sure, I'd probably lose my day job, but then I could focus on playing music and wouldn't have a choice but to try harder at making a living out of it. Without sight, I wouldn't have to worry about all of the distractions around me like television or video games. Don't get me wrong, I love my video games but there are probably better ways I should be spending my time.
Plus, haven't you seen "Blind Fury"?? The dude is blind and he still kicks ass! He has a sword in his cane! How cool is that?!?!? I would definitely have to go the blind ninja route.

I picked deaf, because losing your sight would have to be the most horrible thing ever.
Being deaf would suck too. I can't imagine living life without hearing music or hearing people talk... or being able to talk. Either way, I'd probably kill myself because I'm claustrophobic, and shit like that would drive me to insanity.

definitely deaf!!!!!! I'm an artist so blind would be the end of me. Besides, sometimes you try to tune everyone out anyway. You wouldn't have to hear their shit or pretend like you didn't hear when someone dull is talking to you.

i'm not even sure i can answer this. i love music, but the thought of never being able to see again would be hard to endure i think. my dad is legally blind now and i know it must be hard on him because there was a point in his life when he could see. i think that if i had to lose one of my senses, i would prefer it be lost at birth because at least then you would never have experienced what it was like to have it.

ummm i'd like to just point out that reading lips is VERY difficult, even the most experienced and skilled lip reader is still only going to be able to understand 70% of the conversation =)

I chose Deaf..............my other half has gone partly deaf, and I guess you learn to live with it................You can still read and stuff when you are deaf, and I love to watch movies, if I was blind I wouldnt be able to watch them, also I enjoy driving as I like my cars, so if I was blind I couldnt drive at all. It would be horrible to loose either though, especially if you have had them most of your life then all of a sudden loose one...........if that makes sense

I'd rather go deaf. While it would suck to have either gone I think I could make it without hearing. I'm too visual of a person. I love the beauty of the world around me even on some of the crapiest days. I mean if I get bored enough I'll just spend hours starring at stuff. I could still watch my TV shows play my video games etc...
I love music as well BUT after nearly 27 years in the world I have built up a large store of music in my head. If I just REALLY had to "hear" music I can always just listen to the jukebox in my head. I just wouldn't be able to hear anything new. Also there have been some pretty promising things going on in new age hearing devices so deafness could be a thing of the past in 20 years or so. I could go without hearing for 20 years as long as I kept my site. Lord please don't strike my deaf now or blind. |

Deaf, especially if it's at this point in life because I'd have already learned to speak so I could still communicate. It's just a matter of learning to read lips....

Well, I can't honestly answer this question, since I was not given a choice 20 years ago, and am deaf. So easy answer out would be deafness, since I'm used to it. But what I wouldn't give for ONE day where I hear 100% of the things around me

I was really surprised by how many people chose blind. I assumed that part of the poll would be zero or very near it. Apparently I know very little about my fellow man. For me, I choose deaf. I like to travel, love to drive a nice sportscar, watch television, play computer games. I fence as well and a blind swordsman is a dangerous thing. Being deaf would be challenging for sure and the silence would take getting used to but the freedom sight gives me is something I can't imagine being without.
