Taking classes and working part time... what are your hours?

As the start of the new semester arrives, I am contemplating the hours I should work, and wanted to make a post here to see what hours you fellow students work during the semester..

I was thinking of working 5 hours after class (class until 1:00, work from 3:00-8:00), but I am not sure if that will leave time for study or not.

Last semester I worked 2 full days and a half day, but this semester I don't have any weekdays off and thus was thinking I might work on the same days I have class..

I'd really like to get weekends off, and I was thinking of working Mon-Thurs from 3:00 - 8:00 PM, and then having class Friday and off completely on Saturday and Sunday. I have class until 1:00 to 1:30 during the week...

What hours do you work, and do you find work gets in the way of school/study/homework a lot, or not really? Also, how many hours do you generally work per week during the semester?

Thanks!

I work exactly 10 hours a week during the school year. It's not much, but I believe any more would interfere with the rest of my life too much. Besides, most of the time I can work on my homework while I'm at work. Woohoo..

I start school next week and my schedule will be Wed from 12pm to 10pm and Fri from 7am to 4pm, and I will be working Mon, Tue, and Thu. I already discussed this with my boss and he said that I could use one of those days to work on my homework and whatnot and the other two days stricly for work, of course I won't get paid for that, but the machines there are way better suited for my work than my own computer. Also, that way, if he needs anything on the day I am doing my own work, I can do it on the side.

Last semester I had class Monday and Wednesday at 10 am - noon, and Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm (did not have to show up for the whole time/self-paced course). And would work 2 - 11 PM every weekday, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays come in an hour or two early. Other semesters I have usually done classes Mon-Thurs 9:30 AM to noon, and work the same 2-11PM schedule Mon-Fri. I don't know how I pulled off homework, work, and going drinking after work with friends every other night. Usually write reports, and essays, and piece together projects at 7 AM in the library the day they are due. If I could, I'd like to do school full-time and work part-time (not working at all would be nice).

Well, hopefully I will be working Friday and Saturday from 11-7. That being 11 p.m. and 7a.m.

I say hopefully because I haven't been officially hired yet, but things are really looking good, especially since the place is desperate for night shift employees.

I go to college and don't work. Two scholarships and financial aid leave a nice sum in my pocket every semester. Not having any bills helps too.

Completely depends on how difficult your courses are. If you feel you can really buckle down on the weekends and catch up on the work, then you should have no problem.

I work at UPS, loading the brown trucks from about 3AM to 8AM, and i then take classes during the day at my local community college. I also take online courses, which are nice because i can study for them whenever i feel like it. However, i am not taking a full course schedule. If you are taking a full schedule of courses, i would advise against working part time unless you really have to.

depends, if you can get off and home by 8-9:30 pm each night and be in bed around midnight if you start class around 8am you should be fine.

I go to school 4 days a week, right now Its m/w 7am-10am, and T/T 9a-5:30p and I work whenever they need me M/W/F and the weekend. T/T are usually my days off

Next trimester it will be m/w 7a-5:30p and no class T/T/F and the weekend

I work 40 hrs a week, take classes around that.

Right now I'm only taking one class, Calc 3, but that's because it's a pretty demanding course. Normally I'd take about 3-4 classes, but I tend to stay away from that because it eats into my free time.

If I don't have free time to enjoy anything, I end up hating everyday life.

For a while I was doing classes from about 9 - 5 everyday with a two hour break right in the middle. And I worked on weekends doing about 20 - 26 hours on sat. and sun. It was so horrid as I was taking alot of very important classes with lots of long projects.

I hated everything, and became very burt out on my major, and my job.
All work and no play....

I pretty much have class all day long until about 4:00 usually. Then I typically go to work for a night shift until 8:00 and sometimes later. The hours can vary since I work in a restaurant. However, this semester I have a much heavier class load and so I cut back my hours at work to the weekends only and one week night. I don't think there's any magic number of hours, just what you personally feel you can handle without outdoing yourself. Ten to twenty hours is standard for part time, so schedule what you feel comfotable with in that range and try it out. If it's too much for you, cut back, if you're fine, then either stay with that or add some more. Just do what's best for you. :)

Last semester, I had five classes and I got on average 15-20 hours a week at Cracker Barrel. It allowed for a decent paycheck, but didn't take up too much of my time. This semester, I have the same amount of classes, but just at different times. 15-20 hours a week yet again, except I can't work in the mornings anymore because I have class every morning now. Sadly, alot of my hours are on the weekends.

Ralli 01-09-2005 09:47 PM

i work near on 43 hours per week and guess what only get paid for 38. oh well. I dont study but want to, however the only way that I could do it, would be through correspondence, cause I would not be able to go to uni to do it..........*sigh* oh well.

minyn 01-09-2005 11:22 PM

i work about 6 hours (no Photoshopping included) from 11PM till 2AM twice during the week. i take usually 15 hours and i do well. if you need more, most people i know have no problems up to about 20 hours a week. dont push it, make school priority. the money will come, be it in the form of loans.

oh- i fyou can find a job where you can studying DURING, score. security or front desk stuff seems to leave lotsa time to get your own stuff done.
