What do the asterisks mean? And I'm more likely to die from an asteroid than from being a jackass with fireworks? Kewl. Time to drive up to NH and stock up.

Based on the number of miles I fly every year, I'm going down in a plane crash - I was sort of hoping to be more unique than 1 in 20,000.

I'm with you mal

I do about 50,000 miles a year, and I still hate it.

hope I die instantly, with no pain. Like being at the center of impact from an asteroid. You'd be happy walking along... and bam you're like... wtf mate?
That's assuming the asteroid is undedectable and is going too fast for me to see/hear. Otherwise screw it, toaster in bathtub.

The risk of dying in a car accident is 200 times greater than in a plane crash. Still people think I'm silly because I'm nervous as hell about riding in a car. It's a rational fear!!!! I get no respect.

Actually, it's 241 times safer to fly from LA to New York than it is to drive there. Those expensive plane tickets don't seem so much anymore, if they keep ya alive.

WHen you fly more than 100,000 miles a year, the odds of dying in a plane crash increase dramatically

I don't think the Auto Travel Accident is accurate.

1 in 20,000? Your chances of dying in that manner are VERY slim, unless you fly every single day, which most people don't do.

Of all the thousands of flights a day, hundreds of thousands of passengers without a single accident or death, there's no way it could be 1 in 20,000.

It is not saying that for every flight you take, there is a 1 in 20,000 chance of an accident. It is saying that of all the deaths in the past X number of years 1/20,000 of them were the result of an air travel accident.

So, if you were to fly as often as is average, you run a 1 in 20,000 risk of dieing because of it.

I would have thought asteroid impact would have been dead last. Either way, if I had to choose from that list, I would want to die from asteroid impact, it would be an amazingly awesome thing to see before you die. Although if the asteroid is in the Earths atmosphere and above you, the pressure alone would flatten you like a bug.

That's pretty unique. Only about 300 000 people alive at this instant will die that way. If you want to be really unique, you could always hang around sharks as much as possible and die by shark attack (hopefully).

edit: male, no matter how often you fly, unless you live somewhere with few to no roads, and fly constantly, chances are that you will still be more likely to die from an auto accident than one of the aero type.

I am a little confused. I frequently see that that atherosclerotic causes 50% of deaths. That may include stroke and other cholesterol related deaths.

The one thing I am sure of, life is 100% fatal.

That's like, the coolest thing I've heard all day...

I once had a girlfriend and I tried endlessly to convice her that she was in more danger driving her car (especially the way she did) than flying but she insisted that was impossible and that way more people died each year from plane crashes over car accidents.

She also insisted the WWF (now WWE) was real.

Man I don't miss those times at all. HAH.

Dont worry I am the same. I am nervous when i am the passenger in a car.......I have had a few friends and family die in motor vehicle accidents so I get a little nervous. I am into cars myself, love racing them and love drag racing, but I am in control. ..... ......... Personnaly i would rather tandom skydive than sit in a race car being a passenger. weird huh !

It's a lot more unique.

There are 12 deaths per million hours flown in commercial aviation - that's about 1 every 83,000 hours. If you stayed airborne 24/7, it would take nine and a half years to fly 83,000 hours.

If you go on one rountrip flight per week; three hours each way, it would take over 265 years.

Don't worry - just be careful driving to and from the airport.

Scary thing about odds... like in terms of plane crashes is... it HAS to happen. It WILL happen.

I couldn't imagine being so unlucky to be on that doomed flight... someone has to go through it. Why not you?

For some reason, the odds don't ease my mind much
