How do you figure that the government can't force you to have stuff in your car? They force seatbelts, don't they? My question would be as to whether or not they would, not if they could.

If every car in the future had black boxes like that. It would be a little weird. I wouldn't want people to be recording my driving habits. That's kind of personal, and I don't think they will be able to keep track of all those thousands of people who drive. But then again, we never know what will happen in the future....

The manufacturer can put whatever they want on their vehicles. It's your choice to buy it. Insurance companies can choose to do business solely with customers who own black box cars, but they won't because it isn't the most profitable thing to do. The government has no right to mandate it, but they eventually will because we let them.

I'll rephrase, the government shouldn't be able to force you to have things in your car. Seatbelts were forced by insurance companies to minimize their losses due to accidents or lawsuits. They used the relevant safety data to convince the public.

this is how I should have worded it, staying away from the word 'forced'. thanks.

Not sure if I agree with the use of these - never been a fan of big brother, even if it is for our own good.
