What do you say to someone who says this?
 

I've known this girl for a few months, and when I talk to her, she sometimes complains about something that happened.

"Fuck, I cut myself today"

"This cocksucking cop gave me a speeding ticket"

"Ugh, I got a job interview tomorrow"

"Shit, I'm totally broke."

What do I say when she says one of these things? Usually I just change the topic or say something like "Oh that sucks". I really wanna land in bed with this girl, so help is appreciated.

To number 1: "What were you doing?"
To number 2: "How fast were you going?"
To number 3: "Where at?
To number 4: "That sucks."

With the first three she's looking to tell a story. By providing the openings I have inserted above, you allow her to continue telling the story. She wants to vent. Let her vent. If you do this...chances are you will succeed. ;)

Interesting. I'm like your lady friend, except no one is trying to lay me, and I'm male. I complain about everything, even when I make a conscious effort not to, something will just fly out. My friends react the same way as you do, but then again they're not trying to lay me. I suppose they've also never considered that I just want to vent... or just don't care.

No. not a good plan if you want to lay her.

If you let her vent, she will use you to vent. All the time. You're right to change the subject- change the topic to something happy/funny/even neutral.

If you can change her mood, she'll at least subconciously realize you're someone who makes her happy. If she always come to you in a crappy mood though, don't take that crap. Tell her to talk to you later after she's done pouting.

She doesnt vent all the time, its just something she pops up in the conversation. I dont want to come off as a guy who doesnt care about what happened to her.

You definatley want to get her to talk. If she's saying stuff like that she probably wants to elaborate and tell more. Chances are she's already been ignored and brushed off by other people who didn't really care. Ask her questions and get her to tell you what's on her mind. Basically I agree with onesnowyowl.

I think it's called conversation, tied into a culture.

ALWAYS change the subject to something happy. DO NOT let her continue on her "shitty life" tangent. that will only spell defeat for your endeavors. If you get her to be happy around you, she will notice. If she says "I cut myself" then just ignore her and talk about something exciting going on or something. She's only trying to bring you down.

This is 2004. Sadly, "normal conversation" consists mainly of short statements and various grunt-like noises.

Painted: if your intent is to get laid, whenever you hear one of those catch phrases take the bait and allow her to vent to you. When she's finished, assure her that her problems are hardly enough to tarnish her spirit, and that she's a resilient woman and can overcome the greatest of obstacles. Seriously man if she wants to fuck you she probably will as long as you don't say anything stupid that is. If she says she's broke...ask her if she wants to go grab a bite to eat your treat then she at least doesn't have to worry about how she's gonna get food that day...I mean have you made a move on her yet? All the conversation in the world could very well amount to nothing if you never make a move...You can have a great conversation on a DATE! :) Body language says a lot too..let her know your interested...then if she's interested too good things could happen and if she's not then you no longer have to waste time trying to get with her when it's never gonna happen. Not to say that you should give up right away though...her opinion of you could change. Good luck.
