Ya know I remember soups tasting better when I was a kid...
This might belong in cooking but technically there was no cooking involved I just put it in a pot and ya know...heated it up...I suppose if it better fits it can be moved.
Ya know I remember alphabet soup being one of the most delicious things I could eat when I was a kid...now I'm sittin here eatin a Campbells Selects Minestrone and it's not really all that tasty to me....Dunno what's changed. I guess now that I'm older and eaten some good ass soups like them shits at Olive Garden n what not all the old canned soups just aren't the same anymore...either that or it's just all in my head...I guess I'll have to get back in the habit of eating them and see if my opinion changes eh? Asta!!

Okay I usually only put salt n maybe pepper cause i'm not sure what spices would enhance the flavors of the particular soup that I'm eating. I guess I'd have to look into that a bit to find out which are appropriate for certain soups we got.
Asta!!

This is why canned and preprocessed foods have ruined our generation. As you mature your palete gets more adventuresome but since some of the best foods you can have must be homemade those same bland tastes as that as a child were more than enough now come across as bland and boring. As a kid I could eat Tuna fish all day long...but now I can't eat the stuff unless I doctor it up really good with purple onion, dill weed, garlic, pepper, a touch of salt, pickled relish...so on and so forth.
So best case scenario...learn to cook the foods you like and do away with the canned stuff. It tastes so much better and cooking is a wonderful skill to learn. You can impress ANYBODY with a good meal. But if you must eat canned food...the spice rack is your best friend. Go to the store get some bay leaf, and some garlic powder. Cook the soup with the bay leaf add some garlic and maybe onion powder if you have it simmer it and enjoy. But do remember to take the bay leaf out before you eat it. I promise you that will taste good. |

Sounds like a good idea. Some bastard at another site told me that he used to work at Olive Garden and that "bomb ass soup" is Campbells...I REFUSE to believe that!

There are some canned soups that aren't bad... but it's just easier to make my own. I most always have a bunch of cans of Low Sodium Chicken Broth in the cabinet which makes soup making a lot quicker -- throw in some veggies, noodles, curry or some other spices, and some leftover meats-- and you've got a nice soup.
Progresso are better than the Campbells Condensed soups - but not great.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was. I'd at least wager it is canned.

I think that the contents have probably changed to keep up with costs and health requirements. Also processing may have changed.
I only buy those limited life soups now. I like them with that homecooked taste and full of chunky goodness. Damn I sound like an advert. On the subject of selling unbranded stuff. Working as a high school student in So. Africa, I once spent a few months in the bakery. People loved our pies and once someone even said ours were better than the frozen "Mama's Pies" in the frozen section. I didn't have the heart to tell her that our came from the same place but in a bulk box and all we did was brush egg yolk over the top before baking them. Good tip that, egg yolk brushed on any pie (meat) gives it a real home cooked look. Impress the guests. |

I've had some really yummy soups from Trader Joes and the Whole foods stores in town. I normally couldnt give 2 shits about eating healthy, but my girlfriend has me on this organic kick and the food actually tastes a little better. My favorite right now is a Tomato Lobster Bisque that I can get at the grocery store for 5 dollars for 1/2 lb container.
Yay organic food! |

Lots of old school processed foods are not what they used to be. Coca-Cola uses High Fructose Corn syrup instead of sugar, so it oesn't taste right any more. I don't know what they did to Chef Boy-Ar-Dee. That stuff used to be the BOMB, but now it's pretty gross. Salad Dressing? Used to be sour and spicy, now is chock full of HFCS. I don't even bother buying it any more. I just make my own.

A lot of restaurant soups come from packages. The Campbells Soups come in an institutional size and follow a different recipe than the condensed stuff you buy in the store. Harry's Fine Foods, a company in Portland, OR, produces a large number of packaged soups for restaurants in small batches as well as making grocery store label soups, like Safeway's fancy soups.
Some, however, do not--I worked at a restaurant over the summer and we made our soup from scratch every day. Soup is actually one of the easiest things you can make, so do try.

Anything I ate as a kid just doesn't taste the same any more. With the exception of an A&W Rootbeer float. Wow! I went for years and didn't have one. Then....nirvana. I also went for years without eating Campbells beef noodle soup because I couldn't find it in a store. Then I found it and it just wasn't the same.
Oh, well....so much for nostalgia. A friend runs a sandwich shop. I had her wedding soup one day and really liked it, so I asked for the recipe. She told me it was the commercial Campbells brand and would send me a can. Hmm....

The Cambells Italian Wedding Soup is pretty tasty... And is found at most grocery stores... I think it's Cambell's Select
