Some old bastard just gave me shit for walkin my dog...(rant)
I'm outside freezin my ears off trying to get my dog to shit, I go up this small alley 3 or 4 times and he finally stops to shit on the side of the road and then some old bastard feels the need to come outside with a big ass bright flashlight and come interrogate me like I'm some kinda fuckin criminal. Asked me who I am, what I'm doing I'm standing there with a dog on a lead he asks me what I'm doing, and even has the nerve to ask me where I'm from like it's any of his fuckin business. I had to bite my tounge cause I was taught to respect my elders...I just told him I'm walking my dog...he was like "Well you've been down this alley 3 or 4 times already." I looked at him and said "Yeah I'm trying to get him to go." Then he asked me my name which I gave him, and asked me where I'm from too then said "Well find another alley" like he owns the fuckin alley. Asshole actually shined his big fuckin flashlight right in my face too....Took a lot for me not to just tell his ass off right there. Mean old bastards feel the fuckin need to go snooping on fuckin everything. I'm surprised the old bastard didn't bring a fuckin rifle with him or call the cops or some shit. I know how those old bastards are. Treating me like I was some kinda fuckin criminal. People got some fuckin nerve.

I know exactly how you feel, and i absolutely hate it. Its really pretty bad in my neighborhood, theres a lot of bitchy moms. I've had the cops called on me 3 fucking times for playing basketball on a friday night at like 9 o'clock...they atomatically thing we are doing soemthing wrong because we are teenagers. All i could think was, "Your calling the cops on us for just having some clean wholesome fun playing a sport in my driveway when theres kids out there doing drugs and having fights....

I like it when people take an interest in what's going on in their hood.... doesn't mean you have to like the crumrudgen ... or that he/she has to like you ... but be advised that they care about what's going on around them. Kudos to this old fart for having the stones to ask you who the effff you are and what the effff you are doing in his hood.

And I'm not even a teenager...I'm 20 years old..I'm a grown man...granted I don't really look my age to most people but still...I guess it is comforting that people are looking out for the neighborhood but save that for the real criminals...not some guy walkin his fuckin dog...any idiot can see I have a dog with me, on a lead...since when is that suspicious? It's dangerous too what that man did...if I was a criminal..it's not like he would've scared me off with a flashlight....put yer pride on the shelf and think about whats really important....if you can see him thats good enough...if you see him breaking into something or stealing something then you can just call the cops from the safety of your home...stupid people trying to take the law into their own hands...thats what the cops get paid to do even if it's just for some guy walking his dog. Don't compromise yer own safety so you can feel like a bad ass. I shoulda told him off.

I would have looked at the guy once, then completely ignored his existence. If he felt the need to call the cops after talking to himself for however long it took him to get the hint it wouldn't matter. By the time any cop arrived at his house my dog would have pinched a loaf and i would have been home. If the cop felt the need to further investigate this suspicious behavior known as dog walking i would hand him the baggie of poop as evidence and explain the harassment i recieved in detail.
But thats just me.

Fuck the "respect your elders" bit. Respect needs to be earned. It's not an obligation for me, you, or anyone to automatically respect someone. Even the PRESIDENT doesn't automatically get respect.
If some moron comes up to me and even remotely gives me shit for something to insignificant, he'll get a "fuck you" and a middle finger in his general direction.

I completely understand,
I walk my dog around my apartment complex at certain times each day, and at least once a week some old woman tells me not to walk the dog near her apartment because it makes her dog bark. Now, if she would have approached me with some social skill, then I wouldn't have minded, and I probably would try to avoid her apartment (she lives pretty much next door). But no, she tried to intimidate me, yelled at me, and called me "son". I pretty much just completely ignore her everytime I see her. |

Right, but good intentions don't automatically make something a good action. I do congratulate K-Wise on staying cool, but he's right when he talks about what could've happened to the older guy if he had actually been a criminal. My grandpa's the same kind of guy, and I'm constantly afraid he's gonna get hurt. He was, in his day, a pretty big guy and could've taken the punk on if he decided to attack. But now he carries on the same act without the advantage of strength or size. That's kind of the idea I get from the guy in K-Wise's post. He means well, but isn't really placing himself in a good position.

Keep in mind the old guy or his neighbors may have had things happen in the alley that piqued his curiosity. Crap is happening out there. I had some swine visit my back yard this September and they ran off with half my drying laundry. You can bet I give unfamiliar passers by the eye now, at least to see if I recognize my clothes.
Even if the guy was less than graceful about the confrontation (it doesn't come easy for normally reserved people), maybe think about being friendly and starting a conversation next time. Instead of rehearsing how to protect the ego. Turn it into something better. Always works better in the long run, even if it takes a couple tries. (he'll go home thinking "hmmmm") Your dog might even have a little less "pinch anxiety". |

He was right to make sure you weren't up to anything. The flashlight was a good idea, although he shouldn't have pointed it at your face. It is somewhat suspicious to be walking down an alley several times in a short period of time. After he found out that you were just walking your dog, he should have left you alone. He probably made a big deal about it because he had some sort of problem with kids doing stuff they shouldn't in the alley before.

^ Haha...maybe it has to do with my mom being born when my grandmother was 40 or so...all my aunts and uncles have aged (well) and they have a lot of friends their age it's just kind of a respect thing I've always had and been taught with people older than me. My grandpa was good man so I'm sure a lot of those morals came from him as well as my grandmother. Guess it's just part a who I am heh. So even if someones a jerk to me I usually don't bother to return it...unless it's someone my own age..or a family member. Haha I remember one time my cousins husband was comin back from somewhere..hadn't seen him in a while so I said "Hey man hows it goin? Yer lookin buff dude " and he said "Thanx yer lookin nerdy." then I said "Oh yeah well you're going bald. " Haha later on I saw him in his truck checking his hair in the rear view mirror and moving it around with his fingers

A Real American
|
I had something similar...crusty old bitch got mad I was taking pictures of the wildlife in my complex, and I had over 200 photos of various animals to prove it too. She sees me walking by with my cam and I get a rash of shit that I'm stalking and taking pics in ppl's windows, which I never did. I ponted the cam in their house's direction, as my subjects often perched on the fences surrounding the patios of houses but never shot inside the patio or in a window. I think ppl need to just fuck off if they can't prove anything, but then again I'm a bloodthirsty American.

Another way to handle this dude is to say something like, I'm sure me walking up and down this alley makes you suspicious and possibly a little scared. I undertstand and appreciate your concern. I'm just trying to let my dog take a crap. I'm sure you've had the same problem once or twice. I promise I'll clean up and to try to understand that what I'm doing scares you.
I don't take shit off of anybody and can stand up for myself - right now. But one day we'll all be old, a little weaker - and scared.

I can see where the guy was coming from actually and yes people DO case building while doing such unassuming activities like walking the dog or simply driving down the street. If there had been a rash of crime in my neighborhood and I didn't recognize you from being around there I wouldn't have stopped you but I would have been keeping an eye on you.

my dads friend was out one night walking his dog at like 2am, walked up and down a like 1/8thmile road maby? A 68 year old ex cop came out and started questioning his actions and whatnot, he said he was walking his dog and whatnot. as he was talking to the guy he pulled out his pocketwatch (it was reflective) and the guy shot him twice, in the face and in the back. he thought it was a gun. now he cant see out of one of his eyes, can only controll the left side of his face and has limited use of his right arm and no use of his right leg. now its a pritty extreme situation and all but i do realy think we in the US have a growing problem of people being overly scared or maby not scared but, all to up-in-arms and assumeing there is a problem with things or people without many solid reasons. im not saying that its wright to be mean to the old guy, thats wrong, but i also dont think he should have been that rude to you, or have shined the light in your face like that, thats counter productive.

^ Exactly what I was saying! And good God thats a horrible thing to happen to someone just for walking his dog! That really fuckin pisses me off. I'd really like to see a fuckin statistic of just how many criminals disguise themselves as dog walkers. I bet it's just like the fuckin drugs in our candy and razorblades in the candy apples we had back in the 80's. My fuckin dad used to make me walk the dogs at like 3 or 4 in the fucking morning sometimes...I mean no one expects to be shot in the face for walking their dog. "Shoot first ask questions later" I mean I think we can all agree a watch looks nothing like a fuckin gun. And don't you dare try and make up excuses for that man either..like "Well ya never know it's dark, how was he supposed to know, thats why he shouldn't a been walkin the dog so late, blah blah blah." What he did was a horrible thing and there was no reason for it. Good God. I mean all the news ever shows is bad things happening in bigger cities and people see that shit and they think "Oh thats in San Antonio..thats only an hour or so from here! " So now that must mean it's just as bad here in this little ass town with a population of maybe a thousand as it is in one of the fastest growing cities in Texas...Better get a gun! Or a big dog, and we'll train it to hate everyone who's not familiar so it can eventually end up mauling our daughters 8 yr old neighbor friend and then we can put him down! I'd better stop because I'm pretty enfuriated hearing that I mean I just can not fuckin believe that shit.

And being a prick would only serve to fuel his fears. It doesn't help either one of you understand each other any better. You did well to be polite, but let me ask - If you saw him outside in broad daylight, for example when he was workingaround the yard and you were walking your dog, would you say hello? Would you strike up conversation with him? The world is changing fast and the older you get the harder it is to understand those changes. Think of the world that old guy grew up in, the one he understands. Now, look at the unbelievably stupid shit to each other these days. If he is isolated, with only the TV as a reflection of the world outside his door, how the hell can he possibly understand the real world outside his door or in his alley out back? Realize also, if no one teaches him it is not as different as it seems, how will he, or any other old fuck ever realize - every kid is not a gangsta, every kid with rings in his lips and tattoo's all over is not out to hurt them. If all he knows is what he sees on TV, how the hell can we expect him to feel anything other than fear?

If this guy is afraid of criminals and is a scared old man, what's he doing living in an alleyway? Doesn't he watch tv or the movies? They're a bastion of sin and bad, bad behavior.
/facetiousness In all seriousness, you can't blame a guy for keeping an eye out for suspicious activity. I'm sure the old man would rather feel like a prick once in a while if it means keeping his alleyway safe.
