Why not? Almost all acts are in some way about surprises, shocking revelations... think of even the tamest soap opera... the sudden deaths, the car accidents, comas, pregnancies... sudden plot twists drive consumer interest. Considering this was rock and roll, and not a knitting convention, I think a display of violence would be somewhat in tune with the subject matter.

Also keep in mind that there are stupid people in the world, and they LOVE being interviewed.

First of all, everyone take a step back and calm down. I don't want to see this thread get out of control. That includes baiting and overreacting to honest opinions.

That said, this was a tragedy for all who died and their families.

If you read the posts that came before yours you would have known that this was a thread for fans who are mourning, a man got killed, people got killed, what else would it be other than a thread of mourning? If you tell what a thread is about by the title and don't read the posts that came before it then you really have no clue what the thread is about. Just my opinion

If you can't spare any of your "limited sympathy" then move on and don't respond to the thread, you don't have to respond just because you read it, it's that simple. I believe his name was Darrell not Dimebag, Dimebag was a stage name or a show name if you will. Do you know he wasd a drugged up musician? Or are you just assuming this because of his stage name?

Some posts on this thread are a prime example of what TFP is not, it disgusting that people would take this opportunity to make snide comments about dead people and fans of Darrell.

My sympathy go out to all those affected by this situation

RIP

Someone died and you're selfish enough to make a rude comment. Everyone has opinions, not just you, and it doesn't take a genius to realize this thread isn't the place to go offending the recently deceased.

Now, to get back on topic in the light of the tragedy....

I never really knew much of the guy, but I definitely know he had a large following. I remember a kid in a music class I recently took did a final report on Pantera, and more specifically Darrel. He was a really nice guy and was such a loyal fan for really pure reasons. Beyond Darrel, I'll pray for this kid and the other many fans as well cause I'm sure there's many saddened by this.

It shouldn't have been Danzig or anyone else. It shouldn't have happened at all.

I really dont have much to say about this, or to be more honest, I honestly dont know what to say. I've been listening to Pantera since I was like 13, and I really dug Damageplan too. This is just terrible. While reading as much as I could about it, I found that Blabbermouth has posted a bunch of other musician's opinions about this. If you're interested click here.

Yes, I was very angry when I first created this post. Guess what though, ANGER is the first stage of mourning! If I remember right, the usual process goes Denial or Anger, Helplessness, Depression, and finally Acceptance.

Musical influence has a lot to do with it. I didn't know him personally, but I loved Pantera and the music he made. The celebrity factor means very little in comparison.

I've been listening to Pantera since Vulgar Display of Power came out in '92. The first concert I ever went to was Pantera, Sepultura and Prong in Spokane, WA in the summer of 1994. Since that day, I joined one of the biggest, most loyal fan bases in music. There's a reason why a band that got zero recognition and zero airplay was able to crate as big a following as they did. Their music helped me through some really tough times and communicated a very positive message. A message of inner strength, individuality, letting go of past pain, not caring what others think of you, and the concept of being UNSCARRED. Listening to their music has helped shape who I have become today and I am a better person today for having listened to Pantera's music. Losing Darrell is a tremendous blow to a huge amount of people. People who don't know their music aren't going to get it. I'm trying to explain why losing Darrell is as big a deal as it is but I don't know if it will ever come across to people who's lives have never been touched by his music.

He was a guitar genius. To my fellow Pantera fans, I am with you in spirit. In Darrell's memory, join me and smile with a Black Toothed Grin.

Definately sent a shock through my system. I guess I just realized how vulnerable human beings can be. Perceptions are so far from reality sometimes. I thought of Dimebag as an indestructable metal god.

Definately a sad day for metal. However, his death is not a cause of grievance. Nothing can stop us from enjoying his music. Dimebag may be at a better place now, but his music lives on right here. Here on earth.

A Message From Phil (as relayed by a friend)

I don't have a big official statement. I do have a lot of inside knowledge on the Pantera feud from Philip's side and tonight he gave me the green light to let everyone else in on what I know. He trusts me to do this, and I take 100% responsibility for anything that is inaccurate, but I'm confident you all know I'm not going to touch on this subject unless it's from the heart. He didn't even give me any specifics except for the final part of this post... he just wants me to tell people what I know to be true.

Philip loved Darrell like a brother, always. They accomplished things together that most wouldn't even dare to dream. None of us can know what it's like to be riding such a big machine, it changes the face of music and brings joy millions of people's lives around the globe. The rewards are big, but the stress is unimaginable if things don't go perfectly. Yes Pantera broke up and there was a lot of shit talking through the media. There are two people on this board (WOLVIE and NGJ) who would periodically ask me about what's going to happen with Pantera in the future. I told them each time that I don't know when, but I'm 100% sure that we will see Pantera together again. I told them that when Pantera does get back together, you will know somebody who never lost faith, not for a second. Why did I tell them this? Because I know Philip loves those guys and when he was ready, he would reach out to them and try to make it work again. I had the feeling that one morning (afternoon maybe), all the CFH boys would just roll out of the rack and say "let's go!".

Of all the time I've spent with Rex and Philip, I never badgered them about Pantera, but the subject did come up every once in a while. As for Rex, he would refer to the state of things simply as "silly nonsense". All I ever got out of Philip was something like "nyaaaa... I just don't feel like sitting down and writing Pantera riffs right now."... and that's it! No crazy accusations, name calling, or carrying on. As a matter of fact, in the middle of all the heat, Philip described Vinnie as "the perfect drummer" and that Vinnie could drum more perfect than a drum machine if he so chose. What he said of Dime, he also repeated tonight. "The best of the best".

It's sad that the media would irritate the situation so much. Countless times, Kate and I would listen in on Phil doing interviews. Always, always, always, the jackals wanted Pantera dirt. Sometimes Philip would give it to them, sometimes he would not. However every single time I was there, he expressed his love for, and wished luck to Vinnie and Dime but that was somehow left out of the final print more times than not. I was at Philip's house a few weeks ago and I informed him that I handle the Official Pantera site now, and he asked me if I talked to Dime. I said "No, when was the last time YOU talked to him?" with a sigh, he said "three years". Not a "fuckin right 3 years" not a "yeah three years and it's gonna be three more"... but the dude was genuinely disappointed about the situation. I could tell... the time to patch things up was drawing near.

There's more I want to share, but it's almost 5AM right now, and I just managed to hold myself together long enough to get that out.

Philip isn't hiding out or waiting for the right moment to speak, he's in Texas right now searching for answers to this tragedy the best he can. There was one thing he asked of me, that I humbly bring to you all:

Darrell my brother. The best of the best.
-Philip H Anselmo

My heart goes out to any victim of this sort. I never was much into hard rock. And never heard the name "Dimebag Darrell". But the passing of any artist (or anyone else for that matter) is a sad loss.

But I feel a special loss for the bouncer. I was in security for many years. It takes true courage not to run in that kind situation. But stay and do your duty, a duty that rarely pays more then $10 and hour.

Being a Columbusite, I got to listen to this on the local AM talk radio station the following afternoon. I'm not a big metal fan, but I'm glad to see that unlike on the talk radio, nobody has made the tasteless "This is the 9/11 of the metal world" comment. Tragic? yes. But not to the tune of 3000+ deaths tragic.

Yes, he was a hero. His name was Jeff Thompson, aka Mayhem, and he was a personal friend of mine. I know of few more selfless people in this world. He truly enjoyed helping others and was more likely to do work in return for dinner then for money. He used to tell the guys he worked security for "I'll take a bullet for you fellas". In the end, he did. The world is little bit worse off for his passing.

Thanks to all of you who have considered him here.
