Craigslist: Useful or waste of time?

I am interested to know if anyone here has had a good experience through using CraigsList to Buy/Sell/Trade/Find anything. I have lurked and posted there some things for sale. The only reply that I have gotten is a spam offer to send me an out of state/country money order to have me send the item, etc. Has anyone here had any luck actually marketing something on CraigsList? I love the idea of a free marketplace where people can offer things for sale that they no longer need. Other friendly folks can find something that they have been looking for without spending a ton of money. I guess it appeals to both my enjoyment of recycling and thrift. Is this a real marketplace or a lost corner of the internet that never gets used to its true potential?

So, what have your experiences been? I know that they also have personal ad space on Craigslist, so if you have experiences with that aspect of it, feel free to post that too. But I am more interested in the functionality of it as a market for used goods person to person.

I haven't had much selling my services there. Most of the response I got were from people who found my craig's list ad through google. Oddly my sister has sold everything she put up on there. Posting pictures of your items seem to help sell them. Craig's List is either hit or miss for people. There are so many listings that most of the time the things you sell get lost in the sea of posts.

I've had pretty good luck with Craigslist. I got a great 27" Sony TV for free from some dude, traded my Surfboard for a Snowboard, found my current apartment (great rent) and even met my current girlfriend (6 months) through the Missed Connections board.

I had one bad experience where some lady sold me a busted audio receiver but I didn't pay much for it so it wasn't that big a deal.

I haven't used it in a while and I think they were just recently bought out? By Ebay if I remember correctly? So I don't know if that's changed anything. I just suggest you research as much as possible and use caution when buying stuff from individuals. You can get ripped off or worse but that's just the nature of that kind of stuff. If a good deal sounds too good to be true, it usually is. If someone seems shady, they probably are. Be careful.

craigslist is awesome... I've not ever sold anything but I've given away lots of things on there...

I also know people who've gotten yankee tickets and other things...

I sold a litter of pugs on it once, so I guess its okay.
