Buy Nothing Day

I tried searching to see if a thread was already made but I kept getting fatal errors. I'm also not exactly sure wether this should go here or in politics..

Quote:
Friday November 26th 2004 is Buy Nothing Day (US), the self proclaimed festival of frugal living and culture jammers jamboree. It's a day where you challenge yourself, your family and friends to switch off from shopping and tune into life. Celebrated as a holiday by some, a street party by others - anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!

Buy Nothing Day exposes the environmental and ethical consequences of consumerism. The developed countries - only 20% of the world population are consuming over 80% of the earth's natural resources, causing a disproportionate level of environmental damage and unfair distribution of wealth.

As consumers we need to question the products we buy and challenge the companies who produce them. What are the true risks to the environment and developing countries? The argument is broad and deep - while it continues we should be looking for simple solutions - Buy Nothing Day is a good place to start.

Of course, Buy Nothing Day isn't about changing your lifestyle for just one day - we want it to be a lasting relationship - maybe a life changing experience? We want people to make a commitment to consuming less, recycling more and challenging companies to clean up and be fair. The supermarket or shopping mall might offer choice, but this shouldn't be at the cost of the environment or developing countries.
Anyone else taking part?

The day after Thanksgiving is the day my friends and I hold a LAN party annually. This year it won't be at my place but instead FngKestrel's. We do buy stuff, however. Food, snacks, drinks, beer etc.

But we stay the hell away from shopping malls and places like that, which I think is in spirit with the theme. Too many crazy people out there.

Well, really, why not just buy nothing on lots of other days and buy EVERYTHING on the major sale day??? At least that's what makes sense to me when it comes to getting the most for your money if you can't wait until after Christmas.

There isn't much I buy anyway aside from necessities (like food and gas). So sure, I'll take part!

Day after thanksgiving sales are for fools! I've seen it... people waking up at 4 AM to go stand in line just to save $30 on something. Screw that. I'd rather pay $30 more for something and not have to deal with the hassle of hordes of stupid people.

I spent too many years in retail... Black Friday is the worst day in the world and people are incredibly hostile that day...Hibernation with some leftover turkey sammiches is the way to go...

I work at a retail Electronics/Furniture store(til I'm done with college), and the day after Thanksgiving is crazy. Last year, there were a ton of DVD players for like $20....real pieces of shit I tell ya. This guy punched the hell out of this lady because they were going for the same thing. Luckily, we have a cop supervise it, and the guy got tackled fucking hard. haha

That's how I plan it too, but without the turkey sandwiches.

Since I don't buy into the concept that the consumer culture is somehow bad, I think its just silly.

I of course won't be shopping on the 26th just because I hate waiting in line, but no political statement will be intended.

So who actually took part and who caved in under the pressure of so many great deals? I have yet to buy anything and I don't plan on buying anything even though this thread makes me run out to Best Buy in a mad dash...

I'll take this time to applaud all of the people from this board who are stuck working the shitty retail jobs and such on this day.

Exactly! It is nowhere near worth it go shopping today. I don't see the lure of standing in line for hours to save a few bucks. Not to mention that people tend to get crazy today.

Amen to that. I did it for too many years, and it really did ruin Christmas for me. It's definitely the most hostile time of the year....

I saw the news reports this morning from TRU, and all I could think was these people are nuts for getting up that early, in the cold, and waiting in line at 4:00am to get an Easy Bake Oven for 9.99 (or some other toy that was a doorbuster sale). Ever tell your kid NO?

and a bigger pox on KMart and the other stores that opened on Thanksgiving

I hate shopping, and went shopping once on this, "Black Friday". I usually have homicidal tendencies when I normally go shopping, but when I went once on "Black Friday", those homicidal tendencies turned into genocidal tendencies, as in I wanted to kill everyone. It was so loud, and the people were just so fucking STUPID, I mean fighting over some of the most ridiculous shit, ever.

Shop early or shop late, just skip this bullshit "Black Friday".

If this is meant to be a political statement (by withholding your consumerist dollars) why choose the busiest shopping day of the year? Your, and anyone else's, few withheld dollars will not be missed one single iota on this day and thus your political statement will be mute.

I never hit the malls the day after thanksgiving, but I'm afraid I did buy something today: two wooden planks to fix a gate, and a hot chocolate from the coffee stand next to the lumber yard. There was no one in line at the yard at all -- heaven. Maybe they were all off buying cheap DVD players at Circuit City.
