PARIS, France (CNN) -- Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat, 75, the leader who passionately sought a homeland for his people but was seen by many Israelis as a ruthless terrorist and a roadblock to peace, died early Thursday in Paris.

Arafat had been sick with an unknown illness that had been variously described as the flu, a stomach virus or gallstones. He flew to Paris last week seeking medical treatment and was hospitalized with what Palestinian officials said was a blood disorder.

For five decades, Arafat -- adorned with his trademark checkered kaffiyeh -- was the most prominent face of Palestinian opposition to Israel and the push for a Palestinian state, first as the head of the Palestine Liberation Organization, which carried out attacks against Israeli targets, and later as the leader of the quasi-governmental Palestinian Authority after parts of the West Bank and Gaza were returned to Palestinian control.

His death leaves no clear immediate successor in the often fractious world of Palestinian politics.

The Palestinian constitution provides that the speaker of the Palestinian House of Representatives assumes temporary power if the president dies or is found to be unable or incompetent to rule.

The constitution calls for elections within 60 days to fill the post permanently.

The president holds office for five years and can stand for re-election once.

Arafat was first elected head of the PLO in 1969, and by 1974, Arab leaders recognized the group as "the sole legitimate representative" of the Palestinian people.

In 1994, Arafat was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Israeli leaders Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres, for their work on the Oslo accords, seen at the time as a breakthrough toward an independent Palestinian state and a permanent peace with Israel. Yet a decade later, Arafat died without seeing his dream of a Palestinian homeland come true.

At a summit at Camp David, Maryland, in 2000, Arafat decided to turn down a U.S.-brokered deal offering Palestinians control of most of the occupied Palestinian territory. Three months later, intense fighting broke out between Palestinians and the Israeli army.

Israel -- in retaliation for increased terrorist attacks on Israeli civilian targets -- severely restricted Arafat's movements, confining him to his West Bank compound in Ramallah in December 2001.

Continuing violence, along with corruption and economic problems, raised questions at home and abroad about Arafat's ability to lead the Palestinian Authority.

In 2003, under pressure from the United States and members of his own Cabinet, Arafat appointed Mahmoud Abbas to the new position of prime minister, a move designed to decentralize power. But Abbas resigned less than six months later, saying he didn't have enough support to do the job.

In July, Arafat announced a program designed to unify security forces and tackle corruption after his frustrated second prime minister, Ahmed Qorei, also tried to resign.

Arafat is survived by his wife, Suha Tawil, whom he married in 1991, and their daughter, Zahwa, who was born in 1995.

Thanks to all the conflicting stories, the only way I'll believe he's actually dead is when I see them parade him through the city.

What really pisses me off is the Chirac,that pigfucker, went racing to the side of ARafat just before he died. Why the hell does the US deal with this motherfucker in france? the next time they get invaded, lets just sit back and tell to stick his requests for help up is well laid ass.

Its fitting that he never lived to see the creation of the Palestinean state that he tried so hard to establish by means of terrorism. It is further proof that terrorism is a nihilistic, dead-end strategy for social change. He was a sworn enemy of Israel, an impediment to peace, and he led his people only to ruin.

So expanding Israel by war is ok, but retrieving Palestinian soil isn't?

I think you're right w_bMIM, and that's the ONLY reason to celebrate the man. It's going to be interesting in the coming weeks to see if the Palestinians can find a non-blow-shiat-up position that will help them obtain their goals.

Take a look at a map of the Middle East. Israel is a tiny speck in a sea of hostile countries bent on its destruction. (Jordan being the exception.)

The armies of the entire Middle East attacked Israel TWICE and got their asses handed to them on a stick both times. Israel not only beat back the marauding armies, but, indeed, smartly secured land strategically imperative for their continued existence. Unfortunately for them, they are slowly giving back some of that land they fought so hard for.

What "Illegal War"?

Because Arafat and the Palestineans refused to acknowledge the existence of Israel, and resorted to violent terrorism, Israel was forced to take steps to defend its citizens. Targeted killings of top Palestinean terrorist leaders, operational commanders, bomb makers, and ideological hate-mongers (all committed to the destruction of Israel) are entirely justified in the context of self defense, in my opinion.

And, yes, shame on France. Shame, Shame, Shame, Shame, Shame, Shame, Shame, Shame on the cynical, petty, vindictive, back-stabbing French government, who shamelessly pandered to this terrorist for years, in hopes of securing future financial trading status (and political influence) in the Arab World, while giving the finger to its true ally to the west.

There is a story out today that CBS news apologized for interrupting CSI to announce Arafat's death. They apologized? It used to be that anytime a important news story occured, the news would interrupt whatever was on to report it. What changed? Are we that obsessed over sitcoms and hour long dramas that we stopped caring about what's going on in the world?

They apologized because the interrupted to conclusion of the show when the news was going to be on in like 10 minutes anyway. Makes sense to me - Arafat's death doesn't have any immediate consequences on us, so people can wait until their nightly news.

the french finally did something good... they killed arafat. jk, but maybe we should padade in the streets and celebrate his death like they did after 911. those fuckers need to rot in hell, as im sure mr. wiskers has a special place in hell bending over for the devil.

With Arafat finally out of the way, hopefully leaders with more forward looking policies will cement their position in Palestine. Arafat was extremely short sighted when it came to taking care of the Palestinians, but not when it came to holding on to power for himself for so long.

For better or for worse, his life really proves the saying "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter."

Hmm, controversial man... I'd like to see a comprehensive enumeration for his "nobel peace prize side" and his, err, "terrorist side," and see which one wins out.

Arafat was a hero who was against the illegal israeli occupation and aggression.
