How much does these cost in your country?

Hi all, I've always wondered if things cost around the same in different countries.

So just to put things in perspective, I'm going list out some objects and say how much they cost in my currency(Singapore dollars). You guys then tell me how much they cost in your country.

1.) A can of coke = $1
2.) A cup of coffee in starbucks = $4 - $5
3.) A ticket to the movies = $6.50
4.) A pack of cigarettes(medium) = $8 !! ( That must be the most expensive anywhere )
5.) A 1.6cc Toyota Corolla = $70,000

The above is in Sing dollars. The exchange rate should be around 1 US dollar to 2 Sing dollars. So everything on the list would cost half to most of you guys. You guys got it made if you come down here
:D

Feel free to add to the list too.

Lebell 11-03-2004 11:53 AM

Given your conversion rate, that is about what things cost in the state...with one big exception: Movies.

You'll pay anywhere from $6.50 to $10 US for a movie.

5.) A 1.6cc Toyota Corolla = $70,000
IN CANADA (Calgary specifically)

1) $1
2) Highly subjective, what do you mean by coffee?
******a) A venti brewed coffee is $1.95
******b) A venti sugarless vannila latte is $4.95
****** c) I think the most expensive thing you can get a SB's is around $6
3) $10.95
4) around $12 I think. I don't smoke.
5) I don't have an answer here. 1.6cc, is that cubic centemetres?

TheBrit 11-03-2004 12:16 PM

Can of coke: 50p ($0.92)
Cup of coffee: £2.50 ish ($4.62)
Cinema ticket: Really varies. Around £4 ($7.39)
20 pack of cigs: £4.80 ($8.87)
1600cc Toyota Corolla: £13,500 on the road. ($24,939)
Imperial gallon of unleaded petrol: £3.96 ($7.31)
US gallon of unleaded petrol: £3.29 ($6.08)
$ = USD.

£1 = $1.85
$1 = £0.54

I think that sums it up nicely.

Cynthetiq 11-03-2004 12:18 PM

I used to live in Singapore :) nice to know that things are still about the same price when I was living there in 1989.

1.) A can of coke = $1
2.) A cup of coffee in starbucks = $4 - $5
3.) A ticket to the movies = $10.50
4.) A pack of cigarettes $8
5.) A 1.6cc Toyota Corolla = $14,000

NYC and these are all in US dollars.

kutulu 11-03-2004 12:26 PM

One PACK of smokes is $8 in NY? That is insane. Are cartons in line with that price?

Did you mean to say 1600cc or 1.6L? 1L=1000cc.

only in NYC. I don't know what the cost of a carton is...

I quit when it hit $3.35 here in NYC back in 97... Bloomberg pushed up the taxes on cigarettes sold here in the city when they banned smoking indoors. The rest of the state I have no idea.

BigGov 11-03-2004 12:29 PM

1) A 12 oz. can of coke = $.60 (20 oz. bottle is normally $1)
2) A cup of coffee in Starbucks? We don't have those around here...
3) A ticket to the movies = $5 - $7 depending on the theaters.
4) A pack of cigarettes = $3.50 - $5.00 depending on the brand and type.
5) Brand new? $14,000 probably, no options, no nothing. Used? Much less.

Reasoning behind the differences in prices between Wisconsin and more populated areas in the USA:
1) Less cans are sold, and it's really hard to sell soda in the winter in Wisconsin.
2) We don't have 'em with the exception of a few cities.
3) 99% of the theaters across Wisconsin pretty much suck.
4) Wisconsin has some of the cheapest tobacco and alcohol in the nation I believe.
5) New cars cost about the same across the USA. Used cars in Wisconsin do not hold their value because of Wisconsin winters and rough driving conditions.

as for #3) movie tickets in the evening at the AMC or Cineplex - Odeon are $13.00

#5) not sure on the size of 1.6cc, but a toyota corolla will be about $20,000 of course depending on trim level

thefictionweliv 11-03-2004 12:46 PM

1.) A can of coke = 50-1.00
2.) A cup of coffee in starbucks = $2 - $5 depending on the type
3.) A ticket to the movies = $8.50
4.) A pack of cigarettes(medium) = $5
TX, USA

The number one defficiency of WI is more Mellow Yellow, less Dr. Pepper :o

Spidey 11-03-2004 01:32 PM

In New Zealand current exchange rate $1 NZ = $0.698US
Coke = $1.20-$1.50
starbucks = $5.75 for a venti mocca
movie tickets = $10.50
cigs = $10 we have heavy taxes for smokes :p

absorbentishe 11-03-2004 01:38 PM

Here in Toledo
1. $.50
2. Not sure, have not gone. But generally coffe shops charge $2.00 up to $5.50
3. $8.50
4. Don't smoke, but I see signs. $3.50 for brand names, and $2.00 for cheapies.

Sorry, had to research #5. Base model is around $14,000.

slimpi66y 11-03-2004 01:43 PM

Calgary to Canada is like Cleveland to the US, to put things in perspective,

3. a ticket to the movies: around $3.00
4. a pack of cigarettes: not sure
5. a Toyota Corolla: around $19000 - basically a luxury car there

Normally I wouldn't bother, but since you bought it up:

How is Calgary like Clevland? Are you trying to insult Calgary or Clevland? Furthermore, have you been to either City?

Do you know what "geographical centre" means?

Anyway, I don't want to hijack this thread into an eastern vs western Canada flame war. But in the future you might want to chose your words a little more wisely or go troll someplace else.

In Melbourne, Australia"

1.) A can of coke = AUS$1.50 / US$1.13
2.) A cup of coffee in starbucks = AUS$3.50 / US$2.63
3.) A ticket to the movies = AUS$11.00 / US$8.30
4.) A pack of cigarettes(medium) = AUS$9.50 / US$7.16
5.) A 1.6cc Toyota Corolla = AUS$23,000 / US$17,389

Those are round-about prices.

MSD 11-03-2004 08:48 PM

I live in an area about 20 miles Northeast of New York City, just to give you an idea of where I am.

1.) A can of coke = 6 pack for $3US, $.75US $1US in a vending machine
2.) A cup of coffee in starbucks = $1.95US for a large (Venti)
3.) A ticket to the movies = $9US
4.) A pack of cigarettes(20 per pack) = $4US - $6 US for most major brands, including tax
5.) A 1.6cc (I think you mean 1.6L or 1600cc) Toyota Corolla = MSRP for a basic model is $14,220US, high end is just over $15,000US.

Why does everybody say Starbucks coffee costs $4+?!?!?

I've been to Starbucks all over the country and have never seen their coffee go for more than $1.89 or so, even in airports where everything is overpriced.

Now those chocolate caramel vanilla cream cappuccino hazelnut latte espresso melted-candy-bar drinks cost that much, but that's not coffee!

People don't go around bitching that Chevy Cavaliers are $50k cars because the Corvette costs that much, so why does Starbucks get a reputation for selling $4 cups of coffee?

Opps, I meant 1600cc. Got that mixed up there.

Well, by I normally order those chocolate caramel vanilla cream cappuccino hazelnut latte espresso melted-candy-bar drinks and it's grande.

Wow, movies cost a lot in the states huh, it would cost me more than double what I would have to pay here if I watch a movie there.

But I gather cars cost less over there. Damn my goverment policy of trying to reduce the car population.

goddfather40 11-03-2004 09:31 PM

Southern California, specifically Orange County:

1.) A can of coke = $0.75
2.) A cup of coffee in starbucks = $2 for venti (large) cup of coffee
3.) A ticket to the movies = $9
4.) A pack of cigarettes(medium) = $5
5.) A 1.6cc Toyota Corolla = $14,000 (approx. Edmunds True Market Value for my zip code, base model, auto trans.)

That skews the perspective horribly. You'd have to do a lot of research into both the countries, as well as the cities before making claims like that.

Calgary:
Population: ~950 000
Ethnic Makeup: 77% White, 18-20% visible minorities, 3-5% aboriginal
Pop. Density: 1252.3/km²

Cleveland:
Population: ~500 000
Ethnic Makeup: 42% White, 51% black, 7% other visible minorities
Pop. Density: 2,380.9/km²

Those are just some basic differences that I looked up in a couple of minutes. I can assure you there are many many more. Not only out of interest of proper comparisons, I contested your post because Ohio voted Bush, and therefore I hate Ohio and all cities within it as a matter of principle.

1.) A can of coke = 7,50kr (Grocery store) to 15kr (vending machine)

In Canada you also have to add GST and PST... the PST varies but in Ontario it is 8%. The GST is 7% so add 15% to any purchase.

A carton of Marlboro from the gas station next to the Red Roof Diner on Route 3 in New Jersey (about 8 miles from NYC) is $50.70. Single packs are well over $6.

I can remember buying smokes in the ship's store for 16 cents pack. I'm really glad I stopped. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford the necessities of life: Anime, Porn, and Diet Coke.
