What your Hand Reveals

Your Index Finger Length Reveals WHAT?

Hold your hand out. Are your index and ring fingers the same length or is the ring finger longer?

For most men, the ring finger is slightly longer, and in most women, the two fingers are the same length. But men whose fingers are the same length seem to have a special skill at scientific research.

Why? New Scientist reports that researchers from Bath University in Great Britain say this is due to above average prenatal levels of estrogen that aid their analytical skills. It is thought that estrogen causes the right side of the brain to develop, which is responsible for spatial and analytical skills. In other words, these scientists are in touch with their feminine side. (Some developmental genes, which would be impacted by exposure to estrogen and testosterone, control the formation of both the reproductive system and the fingers.)

The opposite is also true. While those who had a "female" pattern of hormone exposure in the womb became scientists, those who had a "male" pattern and whose ring finger is slightly longer than the index finger chose the field of social science, notes New Scientist.

In this study, all the researchers in the departments of chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics had index and ring fingers that were about the same length, a clearly feminine trait; however, fully 81 percent of them were male. But in the departments of economics, education, management, and social and policy sciences, most had a ring finger that was slightly longer than the index finger, a distinctly male trait, but only 66 percent of the sample was male.

"It's unnerving to think the profession I'm in was determined by the hormones I was exposed to in the womb," lead study author Mark Brosnan told New Scientist.

He speculates that exposure to unusually high or low levels of testosterone in male fetuses leads to the scientific brain, while average levels of hormone exposure lead to a social science brain.

So, what's your hand like? Where do you fall?

Grothendieck 10-27-2004 05:43 AM

Oh oh, so I'm a research mathematician and my ring finger is longer... Poor old me...

Irishsean 10-27-2004 05:44 AM

Interesting, my ring finger is longer and I work with kids, and am working towards a counseling degree. It works out in my case...

Carno 10-27-2004 06:18 AM

My index finger is longer than my ring finger.

inharmony 10-27-2004 06:24 AM

My index finger is longer than my ring finger...

Ydde 10-27-2004 06:29 AM

Not that accurate for me. My ring finger is slightly longer, but I'm pursuing an engineering degree.

Or... I'm in the wrong field.

Glory's Sun 10-27-2004 06:31 AM

mine are the same..so what does that mean?

Rlyss 10-27-2004 06:31 AM

Looks like I'm in the wrong field too! I've never been any good at scientific stuff but my index and ring fingers are exactly the same length!

ShaniFaye 10-27-2004 06:38 AM

ok so Im confused....Im female and my index finger is longer than my ring finger...on both hands...what does that mean?

Well, acoording to the article, you are a female very in touch with your feminine side?

Isn't that a common trait in serial killers? ;)

Yes I believe that means you're normal.

ShaniFaye 10-27-2004 06:54 AM

Ydde...I swear I've read that article 10 times and I dont see anything about the index finger being longer...only shorter or the same size

jwoody 10-27-2004 06:59 AM

http://img36.exs.cx/img36/4086/hands3.jpg

What does this mean? (other than the fact I have 'fairy' soft hands)

mo42 10-27-2004 07:07 AM

Ring finger and index finger are the same length, and I'm persuing a degree in biochemistry. Interesting theory as to why I'm good at it.

Averett 10-27-2004 07:13 AM

Mine are the same length. I guess that means I'm a lady?

Well, my reasoning is this:
Most men normally have their index finger shorter than their ring. Those who had higher level of estrogen and thus more in touch with their feminine somehow causes their index finger to 'grow' longer, thus making them the same length as their ring finger.
So, I was applying the same principle to females.
But now that I write out my reasoning, it seems absurb. Heh. :o

...nah, Ill leave that one alone. :D

Averett 10-27-2004 07:22 AM

Aww come on... I'd love to hear it! I'm sure it'll be a good zing :D

present_future 10-27-2004 07:23 AM

My ring finger is longer than my index finger. I guess that means I'm wonderfully normal.

MSD 10-27-2004 07:42 AM

My ring finger is longer and I'm majoring in Comms and PoliSci. Works out, I guess.

Phage 10-27-2004 07:43 AM

jwoody
It means you are a FREAK! (And need to stop scratching your bum, look at the tone on the left hand...)

considering the article, I think it would perhaps have been better for the poll to be split into m/f...

but, this was gives us a reason to comment, not jsut vote :p

anyways, female, with my left hand of equal lengths and on my right, index is longer. (right-handed).

I'm going to take a leap and say that, it does not mean that i'm exceccively female, but rather that I've a robust scientific brain :D

divagrrrl 10-27-2004 06:58 PM

I'm a girl... my ringfinger is 2mm longer than my index finger.

Suave 10-27-2004 07:04 PM

Ring finger is longer and I'm in sociology, the queen of the social sciences... eerie.

diva, I'm sorry to break it to you, but you were born a man. :D

oblar 10-27-2004 08:43 PM

Male here and my ring finger is a little over 1cm longer than my index finger..

currently doing research in Computer Science... I personally thing this has more to do with the genetics and what your parents have for lengths of fingers, no real affect with what you are good at and your horomonal levels.. sort of how many people have their big toe as the second longest..

Grancey 10-27-2004 08:48 PM

left hand ring finger is longer than index finger, on the right hand they are the same....hmmm

ngdawg 10-27-2004 08:56 PM

Left hand, index is longer; right hand, they're the same length...figures I'm wierd in this catagory as well.....

Fremen 10-27-2004 09:54 PM

Both ring fingers are about 1 centimeter longer than the index fingers.

What's got me wondering is, why do both my pinkies curve inward toward my ring fingers?

Cadwiz 10-28-2004 07:07 AM

Mine are the same length on both hands, but I have never been accused of being overly sensitive. Does this make me a girlie-man?

Destrox 10-28-2004 07:12 AM

On both of my hands my index finger is just a smidgin longer then the ring finger. *Oh No.. What Will I Ever Do* :P

animosity 10-28-2004 07:37 AM

I can move my pinky finger completely independent of my ring finger. Does this mean anything...?

My index and ring finger are the same length. ahh... I am going into medicine(I'll be a surgeon)...

theusername 10-28-2004 07:48 AM

My right hand each are the same length while my left hand my ring finger is longer. So... this doesn't tell me much lol.

Cadwiz 10-28-2004 10:43 AM

Animosity, I can do that on my right hand, but not the left. What does that mean?

omega2K4 10-28-2004 12:05 PM

My index finger is longer.

The Magic 10-28-2004 06:32 PM

I wasn't born with fingers...what's going to happen to me : (

Xell101 10-29-2004 04:33 AM

Mine are the same length. Weeee.

I believe that's just one of those random inherited traits. My father had it (very pronounced) and mine curve in just a bit.

xepherys 10-29-2004 08:47 PM

That doesn't make sense at all...

The right brain controls analytical/spatial aspects, which are typically NOT as strong in females (estrogen). I don't understand...
