Stolen cellphone...advice?

I have a quick question I was wondering anybody could help me with.

Me friend got her all her books and cellphone stolen from school yesterday. Some joker just walked in took her bag from the bookstore and ran off with it.
I was wondering if there is anything she can do to track/locate her cell if they are using it? I know it's probably pretty easy to get a new chip or card and get a new number or whatever but since it was taken yesterday I doubt they'd have time to do that already.
Thanks in advance.

I had mine stolen few months ago. I immediately called the cell phone co. to stop any unwanted charges. Also, if she has it sometimes phones have locating devices in them, however, it is one of those things she would've added to her service. Good luck.

File a police report. It's doubtful that the phone will be recovered, but the police report is helpful for the phone company.

Call the cell phone provider immediately you never know what they'll be able to do - -plus it will prevent usage of it.

Sorry to hear your friend got that stuff stolen -- it's been a few days now, so I hope you have notified the carrier that the phone was stolen to avoid any extra charges. Cellphone insurance is sometimes a good idea too for expensive phones. And don't bet on recovering the phone itself -- although on a technical level, it would theoretically be possible for the cell phone company to locate it.

The "location" option, from what I understand, is a service you can turn on, to allow friends to find out where you are through a website or something like that. As far as I know there aren't any providers in North America that offer that yet, though.

But for emergency purposes and black helicopter FBI stuff, all cellphones can be tracked to within about a block based on signal strength and direction from the tower(s) it's transmitting to. Someone just has to be watching. If it has GPS it's even more accurate, to a few meters or so. But this usually isn't done except for extreme situations.

Or if your keen on vigilante justice find him through who he calls.
